Goose Parvovirus and Circovirus Coinfections in Ornamental Ducks.

Clinical observations and diagnostic procedures carried out to elucidate the cause of high mortality in 2-8-wk-old ornamental ducks (mandari … ed organs and ascitic fluid. Viral diagnosis included molecular detection for the presence of goose parvovirus (GPV), circovirus, avian influenza, herpesviruses, paramyxovirus, reovirus, and polyomavirus. Both GPV and circovirus could be detected by real-time PCR and nested broad-spectrum PCR, respectively. Phylogenetically, full-length nucleotide sequence o …

Substitution rate and natural selection in parvovirus B19.

The aim of this study was to estimate substitution rate and imprints of natural selection on parvovirus B19 genotype 1. Studied datasets included 137 near complete coding B19 genomes (positions 665 to 4851) for phylogenetic and substitution rate analysis and 146 and 214 partial genomes for selection analyses in open reading frames ORF1 and ORF2, respectively, collected 1973-2012 and including 9 newly sequenced isolates from Serbia. Phylogenetic clustering assigned majority of studied isolates to G1A. Nucleotide substitution rate for total coding DNA was 1.03 (0.6-1.27) x 10-4 substitutions/sit…

Parvovirus B19 myocarditis in children: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: The advent of PCR testing for the presence of viral genomes has led to the identification of parvovirus B19 (PVB19) as a causative agent of myocarditis. METHODS: The clinical presentation, course and outcome of children with PVB19 myocarditis was ascertained through a retrospective review. The PVB19 viral genome was detected by PCR from whole blood or endomyocardial biopsy specimens in patients presenting with new onset heart failure. RESULTS: Seventeen patients presented at a median age of 1.3 years (range: 0.4-15.4 years) in cardiac failure with a mean fractional shortening of …

[Parvovirus B19 seroprevalence in a group of schizophrenic patients].

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a highly disabling chronic mental illness. It is considerded as a neurodeveloppemental illness resulting from the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Growing evidence supports the major role of prenatal infections and inflammation in the genesis of schizophrenia. The hypothesis including viral infections has been the subject of several studies and the role of parvovirus B19 (PB19) in the onset of the disease has been suggested. However, there is, up till now, no seroepidemiological evidence of his involvement. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence o…

A case report on parvovirus b19 associated myositis.

Introduction. Whilst there are reports of viral myopathies affecting children and the immunocompromised, infective myositis is a relatively rare inflammatory myopathy in adults. The clinical spectrum can range from benign myalgias to more serious complications in certain risk groups. Case Presentation. We present two cases of myositis as a result of parvovirus B19 infection. Conclusion. Viral myositis and parvovirus B19 associated myositis should be considered in adults presenting with significant myalgia.

Safety and immunogenicity of a candidate parvovirus B19 vaccine.

Parvovirus B19 is an important human pathogen causing erythema infectiosum, transient aplastic crisis in individuals with underlying hemolytic disorders and hydropsfetalis. We therefore evaluated a parvovirus B19 virus like particle (VLP) vaccine. The safety and immunogenicity of a 25 μg dose of parvovirus B19 recombinant capsid; 2.5 and 25 μg doses of the recombinant capsid given with MF59; and saline placebo were assessed in healthy adults. Because of 3 unexplained cutaneous events the study was halted after enrollment of 43 subjects and before any subject received their third scheduled dose…

Acute hepatitis as a manifestation of parvovirus B19 infection.

There are few reports in the literature of hepatitis as a manifestation of parvovirus B19 infection. We describe a case of parvovirus B19-associated acute hepatitis diagnosed based on a positive serologic test (IgM) and molecular detection of parvovirus B19 DNA in a liver biopsy specimen. Parvovirus B19 infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with acute hepatitis.

Reply to Letter: Outbreaks caused by parvovirus B19.

We are grateful for the comments provided by Kelly and Leydon, and Bernard J Cohen. They seem to share our previously expressed opinion that 'in the context of measles and rubella elimination programs, study protocols should include data collection procedures and laboratory tests able to confirm or discard the diagnosis of B19 infections.' [1]. They have provided a useful commentary with relevant information and references.

[Parvovirus B19 in the Czech Republic. Seroepidemiologic study].

Erythema infectiosum which is caused by parvovirus B 19 is notified in the Czech Republic similarly as some other viral exanthemas under the diagnosis "Other viral infections affecting the skin and mucosae, not listed elsewhere" (B08). Analysis of the epidemiological position in the Czech Republic in 1993-1995 was based on EPIDAT data, documentation of epidemic of 1993 in the Liberec district and serologically confirmed minor epidemics (1994, 1995). An increased number of cases (in particular in late winter and early spring) is observed in several years' (cca four-year) cycles and only in some…

Association of parvovirus infection with isolated fetal effusions.

The association of parvovirus B19 infection and hydrops fetalis is well known. However, the association of parvovirus and fetal pleural or pericardial effusions has not been reported. We present five cases of isolated pleural or pericardial effusion with documented maternal parvovirus infection in four of these pregnancies. In the absence of structural or karyotypic abnormalities, spontaneous resolution of the effusion portends for a successful pregnancy outcome.

[A case with petechiae due to human parvovirus B19].

We reported a case of 10-year-old girl with petechiae mainly on the truncus, although who had more than 10 x 10(4)/microliter of platelets. Smears of her bone marrow demonstrated extreme reduction of erythroblasts with giant proerythroblast like cells, which does not consist with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Human parvovirus B19 (B19) DNA was detected in her serum and throat swab using PCR and significant alterations of B19 specific IgM and IgG antibody titers were demonstrated. The petechiae subsided on the 8th day after her admission. She had not shown anemia less than Hb 10 g/dl, bu…

Acute outbreak of porcine parvovirus infection in Mozambique.

Investigations were made to determine the causal agent of an acute outbreak of abortions recorded in a swine herd in Mozambique. Isolation of porcine parvovirus and demonstration of its specific antibodies accomplished by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, haemagglutination inhibition and immunofluorescent tests, indicated that porcine parvovirus was the causal agent of the abortions. Other pathogenic agents causing reproductive failure, e.g. pseudorabies virus, Leptospira or Brucella species, were ruled out because investigations of these agents proved to be negative.

Characterization of a parvovirus isolated from a pig fetus.

A small hemagglutinating virus belonging to the Parvoviridae Family was isolated from a 70 day-old pig fetus in a breeding herd in which inf … ctivity of the isolated strain were both inhibited by the reference immune serum against NADL-2 pig parvovirus. This further confirmed that the 85/193L isolate belongs to the parvovirus genus.
