Paternal and maternal psychological distress and adolescent health risk behaviors: The role of sensitive periods.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent health risk behaviors are linked to poor physical and mental health outcomes. While past research shows that maternal psychological distress predicts those behaviors, we know less about the role of paternal psychological distress and the role of sensitive periods. METHODS: Using 11,128 data from families (50.5% female children) from the UK's Millennium Cohort Study, we examined the role of timing of exposure to paternal and maternal psychological distress in engagement in health risk behaviors (smoking, alcohol use, binge drinking, and sexual activity) at age 14. Pate

Paternal factors and adverse birth outcomes in Lanzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Many maternal factors are known to be associated with adverse birth outcomes, but studies about paternal factors yielded inconsistent conclusions. The study was to assess whether paternal factors are associated with low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth (PTB), and small for gestational age (SGA). METHODS: A birth cohort study was conducted in 2010-2012 at the Gansu Provincial Maternity and Child Care Hospital, the largest maternity and childcare hospital in Lanzhou, China. Paternal age, ethnicity, educational level, height, weight, smoking, and drinking were collected. Birth outco…

Association of Periconception Paternal Body Mass Index With Persistent Changes in DNA Methylation of Offspring in Childhood.

IMPORTANCE: While prenatal nutrition and maternal obesity are recognized as important contributors to epigenetic changes and childhood obesity, the role of paternal obesity in the epigenome of offspring has not been well studied. OBJECTIVES: To test whether periconception paternal body mass index (BMI) is associated with DNA methylation patterns in newborns, to examine associations between maternal and paternal BMI and the epigenome of offspring, and to examine persistence of epigenetic marks at ages 3 and 7 years. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Project Viva is a prebirth cohort study of

Paternal race/ethnicity and risk of adverse birth outcomes in the United States, 1989-2013.

OBJECTIVES: Investigate adverse birth outcomes in the United States (US) from 1989-2013 in relation to paternal and maternal race/ethnicity. DESIGN: We used US natality data for singleton births to women 15-44 with information on birthweight, gestational age, and covariates (n = 90,771,339). We calculated unadjusted and adjusted probabilities of preterm birth (PTB, < 37 weeks gestation) and small for gestational age (SGA, < 10th percentile) among all combinations of maternal and paternal race/ethnicity: non-Hispanic black (NHB), non-Hispanic white (NHW), Hispanic, and Asian, and where paterna

Metabolic rate and energy balance in very low birth weight infants during kangaroo holding by their mothers and fathers.

The aim of the study was to compare effects of maternal and paternal kangaroo care on oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, energy expenditure, skin and rectal temperatures, heart and respiratory rates, arterial saturation, and behavioral states. Eleven preterm infants with gestational age of 28 to 31 weeks, birth weight of 560 to 1390 gm, and postnatal age of 8 to 48 days were studied before, during, and after maternal and paternal kangaroo care. Skin temperature (lower leg) increased significantly during both maternal (36.2 +/- 0.9 degrees vs 36.9 +/- 1.2 degrees C) and paternal (36

Effect of Exposure to Paternal Smoking on Overweight and Obesity in Children: Findings from the Children Lifeway Cohort in Shenzhen, Southern China.

INTRODUCTION: Paternal smoking associated with childhood overweight and obesity has been a concern, but studies have not investigated smoking exposure and smoking details. We investigated the association of exposures from paternal smoking as well as smoking details on offspring overweight/obesity. METHODS: A total of 4,513 children (aged 7-8 years) in Shenzhen were enrolled. Four different exposures from paternal smoking as well as smoking quantity, duration of smoking, and age of starting smoking details were the exposure variables and demographic characteristics, and circumstances of birth,

Congenital heart disease in men of reproductive age: Nationwide cohort studies of prevalence, male fertility, and birth outcomes in offspring.

BACKGROUND: The potential for men with congenital heart disease (CHD) to father children and the impact of paternal CHD on offspring birth outcomes are not well understood. METHODS: Using Norwegian nationwide registries from 1994 to 2014, we identified two study populations: 1 829 877 men aged 18-50 years and 1 207 410 newborns. First, we reported the time trends of CHD in men and paternal CHD in newborns. Second, we compared the rate of becoming fathers in men with and without CHD. Third, we compared birth outcomes in offspring with and without paternal CHD. RESULTS: Between 1994 and 2014,

Association between paternal involvement in childcare and child injury: the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS).

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that paternal involvement in childcare for infants up to 6 months of age can prevent injuries in children up to 18 months of age. However, the relationship after 18 months of age has not been clearly established. Therefore, this study investigated the association between paternal involvement in childcare at 6 months of age and injuries in children between birth and 4 years of age. METHODS: This study analysed data from 72,343 children and mothers who participated in the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). Seven items of paternal involv

Birth outcomes associated with paternal polybrominated and polychlorinated biphenyl exposure.

In 1973-74, a polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) flame retardant mixture was shipped to Michigan livestock feed mills in place of a nutritional supplement and contaminated the food supply. Following the accident, the Michigan PBB Registry was established to study the long-term health effects of halogenated compounds and is now led by a community-academic partnership. PBB exposure is associated with altered DNA methylation in sperm, which may lead to adverse birth outcomes in children whose fathers have increased levels of serum PBB or polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). Paternal PBB and PCB levels of m

Parental age effects on neonatal white matter development.

OBJECTIVE: Advanced paternal age is associated with poor offspring developmental outcome. Though an increase in paternal age-related germline mutations may affect offspring white matter development, outcome differences could also be due to psychosocial factors. Here we investigate possible cerebral changes prior to strong environmental influences using brain MRI in a cohort of healthy term-born neonates. METHODS: We used structural and diffusion MRI images acquired soon after birth from a cohort (n = 275) of healthy term-born neonates. Images were analysed using a customised tract based spati…

Paternal weight prior to conception and infant birthweight: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have consistently demonstrated that maternal weight status both before and during pregnancy is associated with infant birthweight. However, a fundamental limitation across this literature remains that previous studies have not evaluated the concomitant impact of paternal weight at conception, owing to the paucity of studies in which fathers were assessed prior to pregnancy. Thus, we established a cohort of preconception couples to prospectively evaluate the associations of maternal and paternal weight prior to pregnancy with infant birthweight at delivery

Sperm aneuploidy in fathers of Klinefelter's syndrome offspring assessed by multicolour fluorescent in situ hybridization using probes for chromosomes 6, 13, 18, 21, 22, X and Y.

BACKGROUND: It is still unclear if a recurrence risk would exist in fathers of an aneuploid offspring of paternal origin. We have studied disomy frequencies in spermatozoa from fathers having Klinefelter syndrome (KS) offspring or miscarriages. The effect of paternal age on sperm disomy percentages is also analysed. METHODS: Parental origin of 17 KS patients was carried out by amplification of X chromosome polymorphisms. Spermatozoa from their fathers were studied by multicolour fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) using probes for chromosomes 6, 13, 18, 21, 22, X and Y. RESULTS: In 53% …

Missing paternal data and adverse birth outcomes in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Research on predictors of birth outcomes tends to focus on maternal characteristics. Less is known about the role of paternal factors. Missing paternal data on administrative records may be a marker for risk of adverse birth outcomes. DATA AND METHODS: Analyses were performed on a cohort of births that occurred from May 16, 2004 through May 15, 2006, which was created by linking birth and death registration data with the 2006 Canadian census. Log-binomial and binomial regression were used to estimate relative risks and risk differences for preterm birth, small-for-gestational-age

Paternal involvement in childcare and unintentional injury of young children: a population-based cohort study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in young children. A previous study reported the protective effect of maternal parenting on young childhood injury; however, few studies have shown an association between paternal involvement in childcare and young childhood injury. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of paternal involvement in childcare to reduce the likelihood of childhood injury. METHODS: A population-based birth cohort study in Japan (2001-02), the 'Longitudinal Survey of Babies Born in 21st Century', was used (n = 42 144). The impact of pat

Parental Age of Onset of Cardiovascular Disease as a Predictor for Offspring Age of Onset of Cardiovascular Disease.

OBJECTIVE: The risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) is higher for individuals with a first-degree relative who developed premature CVD (with a threshold at age 55 years for a male or 65 years for a female). However, little is known about the effect that each unit increase or decrease of maternal or paternal age of onset of CVD has on offspring age of onset of CVD. We hypothesized that there is an association between maternal and paternal age of onset of CVD and offspring age of onset of CVD. METHODS: We used the Framingham Heart Study database and performed conditional imputation for CVD-cen…

The interplay among preschool child and family factors and the development of ODD symptoms.

The present study examined (a) the interactions between early behavior, early parenting, and early family adversity in predicting later oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms, and (b) the reciprocal relations between parent functioning and ODD symptoms across the preschool years. Participants were 258 three-year-old children (138 boys, 120 girls) and their parents from diverse backgrounds who participated in a 4-year longitudinal study. Early child behavior, parenting, and family adversity did not significantly interact in the predicted direction. Reciprocal relations between ODD symptom
