Paternal education and adverse birth outcomes in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Research on predictors of adverse birth outcomes has focused on maternal characteristics. Much less is known about the role of paternal factors. Paternal education is an important socioeconomic marker that may predict birth outcomes over and above maternal socioeconomic indicators. METHODS: Using data from the 2006 Canadian Birth-Census Cohort, we estimated the associations between paternal education and preterm birth, small-for-gestational-age (SGA) birth, stillbirth and infant mortality in Canada, controlling for maternal characteristics. Binomial regression was used to estimate

Paternal Uniparental Disomy of Chromosome 14 with Hypospadias.

Paternal uniparental disomy 14 (patUPD14) is a distinct, clinically recognizable syndrome. Using a clinical SNP microarray, we identified patUPD14 in a boy with a normal karyotype presenting cardiomyopathy and facial anomalies, a specific configuration of the thoracic ribs ('coat hanger sign'), and hypospadias. Analyses of polymorphic microsatellites confirmed the diagnosis of patUPD14. We discuss the functions of the genes included in the rearrangement and their involvement in the pathogenesis of these disorders, especially hypospadias. [The value of paternal age on the outcome of intrauterine insemination].

BACKGROUND: Although age to conceive has been delayed in both males and females, male age is controversial as decisive for this purpose. OBJECTIVE: To describe the results of intrauterine insemination pregnancy according to the age of the man. To determine whether this variable modifies semen parameters. To analyze whether pregnancy outcomes are modified by sperm morphology. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A descriptive, retrospective, longitudinal and analytical study. We analyzed 2,276 intrauterine insemination cycles performed in the Mexican Center for Fertility CEPAM from January 2000 to December

Hepatoblastoma in an infant with paternal uniparental disomy 14.

A 29-year-old primigravida developed polyhydramnios at 24 weeks of gestation, requiring six serial amnioreductions. In addition, prenatal ultrasound examinations revealed a fetus with small stomach pouch, small thorax, slightly shortened limbs, and skin edema; paternal uniparental disomy 14(upd(14)pat) phenotype was suspected. At 37 weeks, the patient delivered a 2558 g female infant with characteristic facial features, webbed neck, thoracic deformity, abdominal wall defect, skin edema, overlapping fingers, placentomegaly, and small thorax with 'coat-hanger' appearance of the ribs on chest X-r

Adolescent obesity and maternal and paternal sensitivity and monitoring.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if adolescent obesity is associated with parenting characterized by lower sensitivity and lower monitoring of adolescent activities. METHODS: We used data from 744 adolescents in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. Height and weight were measured at age 15½ years and obesity defined as body mass index ≥ 95th percentile for age and sex. Maternal and paternal sensitivity were assessed by direct observation of a parent-adolescent interaction task. Maternal and paternal monitoring were assessed by pa

"Fathers' rights" and the defense of paternal authority in Australia.

Feminism's achievements regarding violence against women are a key target for the fathers' rights movement. This article provides an overview of the impact of the fathers' rights movement on men's violence against women. It documents the ways in which fathers' rights groups in Australia have influenced changes in family law, which privilege parental contact over safety, particularly through moves toward a presumption of children's joint residence. They have attempted to discredit female victims of violence, to wind back the legal protections available to victims and the sanctions imposed on pe

On the paternal origin of trisomy 21 Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS), characterized by an extra free chromosome 21 is the most common genetic cause for congenital malformations and learning disability. It is well known that the extra chromosome 21 originates from the mother in more than 90% of cases, the incidence increases with maternal age and there is a high recurrence in young women. In a previous report we have presented data to indicate that maternal trisomy 21 (T21) ovarian mosaicism might provide the major causative factor underlying these patterns of DS inheritance. One important outstanding question concerns the reason w

Influence of paternal age on assisted reproduction outcome.

There has been an increasing tendency to delay parenthood in developed countries in recent years, and there is not enough information available regarding the effect of this on fertility. The aim of this work was to determine the role of paternal age on the outcome of assisted reproduction. A retrospective study was designed comprising a total of 2204 intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycles, 1286 IVF cycles and 1412 IVF cycles with donated oocytes during the period 2000 to 2006. Male mean age was 34.3 years (range 25-56) for IUI, 34.8 years (range 19-62) for IVF and 41.10 years (range 25-71) for

Risk factors for paternal physical child abuse.

OBJECTIVE: This study uses the developmental-ecological framework to examine a comprehensive set of paternal factors hypothesized to be linked to risk for paternal child abuse (PCA) among a diverse sample of fathers. Attention was given to fathers' marital status and their race/ethnicity (White, African American, and Hispanic). METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 1257 married or cohabiting biological fathers who participated in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study. PCA was assessed when the index children were 3 years old. Analyses included a comprehensive set of self-reported p

Paternal work stress and prolonged time to pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore an association between psychosocial stress at work in married men and their spouses' prolonged time to pregnancy (TTP). METHODS: All married male workers of a large Korean petrochemical enterprise and their wives fulfilling the selection criteria were included. Main selection criteria were lack of use of contraceptives and experienced pregnancy in recent past. Data were available from 322 couples. Psychosocial stress at work was measured by the effort-reward imbalance questionnaire. Prolonged TTP was measured by the "TTP questionnaire". RESULTS

Paternal relatives and family history of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Reported family medical history may be the most widely accessible genomics screen currently available. The worth of any population-screening tool may be measured by parameters such as sensitivity and specificity. There is some evidence and theory suggesting that family history of breast cancer may be more frequently communicated about maternal (versus paternal) lines. If true, a discrepancy in reporting family history of breast cancer could mean suboptimal accuracy for this genomics-screening tool. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of reported family history of breast cancer was

Influence of paternal age on the risk of spontaneous abortion.

The frequency of chromosomal anomalies in spermatozoa appears to increase with male age. Because these anomalies play a role in the etiology of spontaneous abortion, an influence of paternal age on risk of spontaneous abortion is plausible but not established. The aim was to characterize this influence in a prospective study among 5,121 California women, who as members of a prepaid health plan were interviewed in 1990 or 1991 when they were less than 13 weeks' pregnant and who were followed until the end of pregnancy. The risk of spontaneous abortion between weeks 6 and 20 of pregnancy was stu

Paternal age and the risk of birth defects in Norway.

PURPOSE: We studied 1,869,388 births from The Medical Birth Registry of Norway to assess the effect of father's age on risks of birth defects in offspring. METHOD: Thirteen separate categories were studied including pooled categories of neural tube defects and any type of defect. We used logistic regression models to adjust for maternal age, year of birth, maternity institution, parity, and correlation between siblings. RESULTS: There was little evidence of increased risk by high paternal age for any category of defects, except for a category of "other central nervous system" where risk esti

Response to alcohol in females with a paternal history of alcoholism.

RATIONALE: Several studies have demonstrated that males with a family history of alcoholism (FHP) show less of a response to alcohol (e.g. lower ratings of intoxication) than males without a family history of alcoholism (FHN). The purpose of this pilot study was to determine if FHP females also showed a reduced sensitivity to alcohol compared to FHN females. OBJECTIVES: To determine if FHP females (n=16) were less sensitive to the subjective effects and performance-impairing effects of alcohol compared to FHN females (n=16). METHODS: The effects of placebo and alcohol (0.25, 0.50, 0.75 g/kg,

Paternal age and risk of schizophrenia in adult offspring.

OBJECTIVE: The study examined the relation between paternal age at the time of birth and risk of schizophrenia in the adult offspring. METHOD: Data from the birth cohort of the Prenatal Determinants of Schizophrenia study were used in this study. Virtually all members of this birth cohort had prospective information about paternal age at the time of the offspring's birth. Subjects with schizophrenia and other schizophrenia spectrum disorders (N=71) among members of this birth cohort were previously ascertained. In separate analyses, paternal age was modeled as a continuous variable and as a c

Preferential loss of the paternal alleles in the 18q- syndrome.

Individuals with the 18q- syndrome have variable deletions from the long arm of chromosome 18. They also exhibit a highly variable phenotype. To correlate genotype with phenotype accurately, extensive molecular and phenotypic analyses are needed on each affected individual. As a part of this analysis, we have determined the parental origin of the deleted chromosome in 34 individuals with the 18q- syndrome. We have found that 85% of the de novo deletions are paternal in origin. The percentage of fathers of individuals with paternally derived deletions who were > 30 years old was (not significan

Paternal age and the risk of birth defects in offspring.

Previous studies have shown that advanced paternal age is associated with an increase in new dominant mutations that may result in some rare congenital anomalies or syndromes in the offspring. Nevertheless, few epidemiologic studies have evaluated the effect of paternal age on the risk of more common birth defects. We examined data from the British Columbia Health Surveillance Registry, which included a total of 9,660 cases of birth defects (22 specific defect groups). We chose matched controls from the birth files of British Columbia (1952-1973). With the exception of an unusual change in dir

Paternal age and the risk of congenital heart defects.

The effect of paternal age on the risk of birth defects among offspring is less well studied than the effect of maternal age, with few comprehensive epidemiologic studies having been conducted. Advanced paternal age has been shown to be associated with an increase in new dominant mutations that result in particular congenital anomalies. The relationship between paternal age and more common birth defects, for example, cardiac defects, has not been as extensively evaluated. Therefore, a total of 4,110 cases of congenital heart defects was identified from the British Columbia Health Surveillance

Effects of paternal occupational exposure on spontaneous abortions.

BACKGROUND: Paternal exposure to mutagenic agents has been suggested to affect pregnancy outcome adversely. METHODS: A nationwide data base of medically diagnosed spontaneous abortions and other pregnancies and national census data was used to evaluate the effects of men's occupational exposures on risk of spontaneous abortion in 99,186 pregnancies in Finland. Census data from the years 1975 and 1980 provided information about the occupation, industry, and socioeconomic status. A job-exposure classification was developed to classify women and their husbands according to possible occupational
