Retrospective analysis of dogs and cats with a mixed form of pulmonary hypertension and suspected pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis in comparison to animals with predomination of precapillary pulmonary hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis (PCH) is an idiopathic disease with the anomalous proliferation of a small capillary-like vessel in the pulmonary tissue, which can lead to a severe form of PH. There are only several cases of PCH described in veterinary literature: 27 cases in dogs and 2 cases in cats. In veterinary medicine, PH is mostly recognized as a consequence of left heart failure as a progression of the postcapillary PH to the precapillary form. PCH is mostly described as a primary disease, but resistant postcapillary PH with the high possibility of pulmonary edema raise

Axis spinous process malformations are commonly identified in a sample of English Bull Terriers without associated clinical signs.

Congenital cervical vertebral malformations (CCVM) have been infrequently reported in veterinary medicine, with limited examples of axis spinous process malformations. The objective of this retrospective cross-sectional study was to describe the radiological characteristics, prevalence, and clinical relevance of a characteristic axis vertebral malformation in a sample of English Bull Terriers (EBTs). Medical records and diagnostic imaging studies of the cervical vertebral column of EBTs presenting for any reason were reviewed and described. Based on evaluation of the images, EBTs were divided

Characterization of Suspected Crimes against Companion Animals in Portugal.

Animal crimes are a widespread phenomenon with serious implications for animal welfare, individual well-being and for society in general. These crimes are universal and represent a major problem in human/animal interaction. In Portugal, current law 69/2014 criminalizes the mistreatment and abandonment of companion animals. This study characterizes forensic cases received at the Laboratory of Pathology of the National Institute of Agrarian and Veterinary Investigation (Vairão) since the enforcement of the aforementioned legislation. A retrospective study was carried out based on the consult of

Accidental infection of veterinary personnel with Mycobacterium tuberculosis at necropsy: a case study.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the main cause of human tuberculosis. Infection in companion animals is mainly acquired from close contact to a diseased human patient and hence rarely diagnosed in countries with low tuberculosis incidence rates. Therefore the general awareness of the disease might be low. Here we report the potential risk of infection for veterinary personnel with M. tuberculosis during the clinical and pathological examination of a dog with unexpected disseminated tuberculosis. The dog had presented with symptoms of a central nervous system disease; rapid deterioration prevente

Synophthalmia in a Holstein cross calf.

Synophthalmia is a form of cyclopia, in which some elements of two eyes are fused and form a single eye in the middle region of the forehead. The head of a Holstein female calf born from a 5-year-old cow was referred to Department of Pathology, School of Veterinary Medicine, Shahrekord University due to multiple congenital anomalies. The calf had been slaughtered immediately after birth due to severe respiratory distress by the owner. The calf showed multiple birth defects, including synophthalmia, holoprosencephaly, absence of optic chiasma, hypoplastic maxilla, curved mandibles, arrhinia and

Bartonella spp.: throwing light on uncommon human infections.

After 2 decades of Bartonella research, knowledge on transmission and pathology of these bacteria is still limited. Bartonella spp. have emerged to be important pathogens in human and veterinary medicine. For humans, B. henselae is considered to represent the most relevant zoonotic Bartonella species and is responsible for cat scratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis, and other disorders. Over the years, many Bartonella species have been isolated from humans, cats, dogs, and other mammals, and infections range from an asymptomatic state (e.g., animal-specific species) to even life-threatening d

Prevalence of neurological diseases associated with cervical pain and/or signs of cervical myelopathy in French bulldogs: a retrospective analysis of 105 cases.

INTRODUCTION: French bulldogs can be affected by several neurological diseases, with myelopathies representing the most frequent cause of neurological signs. Studies focusing on the epidemiology of cervical diseases in this breed are lacking. This study aims to describe the prevalence of neurological pathologies responsible for cervical pain and/or signs of cervical myelopathy, assuming that intervertebral disc herniation represents the most common disease; a second aim was to evaluate how often different pathologies coexist in this spinal region in French bulldogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A r

A retrospective study on the prevalence of main clinical findings in brown bears (Ursus arctos) rescued from substandard husbandry conditions.

Brown bears (Ursus arctos) are kept under varied captive conditions, some of which may greatly compromise their welfare. FOUR PAWS is an NGO that rescues some of these bears kept in substandard conditions and houses them in species-appropriate sanctuaries, where preventive and reactive veterinary care is provided. This retrospective study aims to provide an overview of pathologies and clinical abnormalities reported in veterinary records and their prevalence according to body system affected and pre-rescue bear origin. Origin was categorised as subzoo (bears coming from substandard zoos), danc

Case Report: Unilateral uterine torsion in a non-pregnant Siberian-Husky-clinical insights and implications for reproductive management.

Uterine torsion is a rare condition in dogs, typically associated with pregnancy or uterine pathology. A 5-year-old, female intact, Siberian-Husky presented with a history of lethargy and constipation for 3 days. Physical examination revealed pale mucous membranes and a firm, painful abdomen. Abdominal imaging revealed a thickened uterine body wall with an increased volume of mixed anechoic and heterogeneous echoic intrauterine content. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed the 360-degree torsion of the left uterine horn, and due to the extensive lesions ovariohysterectomy was deemed necessary. Pos

A histopathology image dataset for Johne's disease detection and research.

Johne's disease (paratuberculosis), caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, is a chronic intestinal infection that affects ruminants and poses significant challenges for livestock health and management. Accurate and early diagnosis is of paramount importance for effective disease control, yet traditional histopathological assessment requires expert interpretation and remains subject to interobserver variability. In this paper, we present a curated dataset of histopathological slide images collected from tissue samples confirmed to be positive or negative for Johne's disease.

Spondylosis deformans as an indicator of transport activities in archaeological dogs: A systematic evaluation of current methods for assessing archaeological specimens.

Over the past several decades archaeologists have used the spinal pathology spondylosis deformans as an indicator that archaeological dogs were used to pull or carry loads. This interpretive approach is largely based upon observations of prehistoric dog remains and archaeologist's interpretations of veterinary literature on recent sled dogs and other draft animals. However, no comparative large-scale studies of the occurrence of spondylosis deformans in wild canids, transport dogs, and dogs never involved in pulling or carrying loads have been published. To evaluate the reliability of spondylo
