Predicting errors before they occur using trial-by-trial dynamics of pre-error and post-error behavior.

Errors rarely occur in isolation, but rather within behavioral sequences and are known to shape subsequent behavior. However, understanding the full time course of the impact of errors has been challenging given data limitations. Here, to gain key insights, two groups of precisely matched participants (n > 35,000) were compared; those who made versus did not make an error in a short object discrimination task. Linear mixed-effects models revealed error-induced effects both preceding and following errors. First, the error group showed pre-error speeding up to eight trials before the error occur

HVPNet: A bio-inspired network for general salient and camouflaged object detection.

In recent years, most research on multimodal salient object detection (SOD) and camouflaged object detection (COD) typically aims to improve performance through complex cross-modal feature fusion and decoding structures. However, this approach leads to an excessively large model parameter scale and often fails to deliver satisfactory detection performance due to structural redundancy. In contrast, the human visual process is able to efficiently perform salient and camouflaged object identification without such complex structures. This contrast raises an important question: Can we draw conceptu

Symbol grounding of number words in the subitization range.

In three experiments, we explored whether number words are grounded in a nonsymbolic representation of numerosity. We used a sentence-picture verification task, where participants are required to check whether the concept given in a sentence corresponds to the subsequently presented object. We concurrently manipulated numerical congruency by orthogonally varying the number word attached to the concept and the quantity of objects. The number words and numerosities varied from one to four in Experiment 1 and from six to nine in Experiment 2. In Experiment 3, we employed number words six and eigh

Action and perception in literacy: A common-code for spelling and reading.

There is strong evidence that reading and spelling in alphabetical scripts depend on a shared representation (common-coding). However, computational models usually treat the two skills separately, producing a wide variety of proposals as to how the identity and position of letters is represented. This article treats reading and spelling in terms of the common-coding hypothesis for perception-action coupling. Empirical evidence for common representations in spelling-reading is reviewed. A novel version of the Start-End Competitive Queuing (SE-CQ) spelling model is introduced, and tested against

The remarkable inefficiency of word recognition.

Do we recognize common objects by parts, or as wholes? Holistic recognition would be efficient, yet people detect a grating of light and dark stripes by parts. Thus efficiency falls as the number of stripes increases, in inverse proportion, as explained by probability summation among independent feature detectors. It is inefficient to detect correlated components independently. But gratings are uncommon artificial stimuli that may fail to tap the full power of visual object recognition. Familiar objects become special as people become expert at judging them, possibly because the processing bec

A comparison of temporal integration in children with a specific reading disability and normal readers.

Previous research has suggested that whereas some techniques show that subjects with a specific reading disability (SRD) have greater visible persistence than controls, a temporal integration of form technique does not. It has been suggested that the failure of the temporal integration task to show a difference results from the spatial separation between stimuli used in the technique. In this study SRD and control subjects were compared on a new version of a temporal integration task, under two conditions varying the spatial separation of elements in the display. It was predicted that there wo

Colored aftereffects contingent upon global transformations?

Dodwell and Humphrey (Psychol. Rev. 97, 78-79, 1990) have argued that colored aftereffects (CAEs) are contingent on the global geometries of local orientation and edge components in induction patterns. The spatiotopic dimensions underlying these geometries are derived from previous applications of the mathematics of continuous transformations (Lie groups) to the stimulus dynamics of perceptual invariance. In these terms, complementary CAEs induced by inspecting alternating colored bullseyes and spokes are attributed to the adaptation of orthogonal spatiotopic channels; the former characterized

Body movements and retinal pattern displacements while approaching a stationary object in the walking fly, Calliphora erythrocephala.

When a walking fly approaches a stationary object two types of body movements are distinguishable. Type I body movements are characterized by low frequencies (0.4-1.3 Hz) and large amplitudes (28-65 degrees). Superimposed on these movements are type II body movements which are characterized by high frequencies (7.3-10.6 Hz) and small amplitudes (5.9-8.2 degrees) (Figs. 3-6; Table 1). Type II movements occur no matter whether the fly is fixating a pattern or orientating itself in homogeneous surroundings without any pattern. In contrast, only 72% of the flies with immobilized heads and 62% of t

The veil of distraction: Mind-wandering and memorability jointly shape visual recognition and recall.

The shift of attention from external stimuli toward task-unrelated thoughts (TUTs), or mind-wandering, has been shown to disrupt encoding and subsequent retrieval of information. The present study examined how TUT during encoding affects memory for visual scenes that vary in memorability, an intrinsic stimulus property reflecting the likelihood of recognition across individuals. In Experiment 1, participants studied images of high or low memorability while intermittently reporting their attentional state. A subsequent recognition test revealed independent effects of mind-wandering and memorabi

Does exposure within an experiment affect the influence of familiar parts versus wholes on figure assignment?

Recurring questions in visual perception concern the role of experience and the relationship between parts and wholes. We investigated these questions in an experiment in which observers reported where they perceived a figure relative to a central border in bipartite displays in which the region on one side depicted either: (1) an identifiable configuration of a familiar basic-level object in its typical upright orientation (a "whole" familiar configuration); (2) an inverted version of (1); (3) a part rearranged (PR) version of (1) comprising the same parts as the upright familiar configuratio

Preserved Expert Object Recognition in a Case of Visual Hemiagnosia.

We examined a stroke patient (HWS) with a unilateral lesion of the right medial ventral visual stream, involving the right fusiform and parahippocampal gyri. In a number of object recognition tests with lateralized presentations of target stimuli, HWS showed significant symptoms of hemiagnosia with contralesional recognition deficits for everyday objects. We further explored the patient's capacities of visual expertise that were acquired before the current perceptual impairment became effective. We confronted him with objects he was an expert for already before stroke onset and compared this p

Three-Dimensional Face Recognition in Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Psychophysical and Structural MR Study.

OBJECTIVES: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has been associated with a high risk of conversion to Alzheimer's dementia. In addition to memory complaints, impairments in the visuospatial domain have been reported in this condition. We have previously shown that deficits in perceiving structure-from-motion (SFM) objects are reflected in functional reorganization of brain activity within the visual ventral stream. Here we aimed to identify structural correlates of psychophysical complex face and object recognition performance in amnestic MCI patients (n=30 vs. n=25 controls). This study was, ther

A reappraisal of person recognition and identification.

In the last years an increasing number of cases (Gainotti et al., 2008, this issue) have been reported in whom difficulty to recognise and identify familiar people occurs in everyday multimodal settings, differently from unimodal face-specific impairments (i.e., prosopagnosia). A reappraisal of current person processing models is presented in order to account for such deficits as well as for the common slips of recognition occurring in healthy subjects. The model we propose is based upon three main modifications of current models, namely: (1) the role of PINs as stores of multimodal perceptual

Three-dimensional shape cues affect human and artificial recognition systems differently.

Humans and neural networks use shape and texture information differently. While humans weigh shape heavily in their ultimate classification decision, neural networks are more biased towards texture cues. Many tests of shape vs. texture bias have focused on shape recognition from an object's external contour. However, shape information is also conveyed through internal contours, shading, and attached shadows, especially when an object is viewed from noncanonical perspectives. Using models from ShapeNet, we created datasets of 120,000 texture-substituted images of objects from many viewpoints wi

Knowledge about writing influences reading: Dynamic visual information about letter production facilitates letter identification.

How are reading and writing related? In this study, we address the relationship between letter identification and letter production, uncovering a link in which production information can be used to identify letters presented dynamically. By testing an individual with a deficit in letter identification, we identified a benefit which would be masked by ceiling effects in unimpaired readers. In Experiment 1 we found that letter stimuli defined by the direction of dot motion (tiny dots within letter move leftward, background dots move rightward) provided no advantage over static letters. In Experi

Bar graphs depicting averages are perceptually misinterpreted: the within-the-bar bias.

Perhaps the most common method of depicting data, in both scientific communication and popular media, is the bar graph. Bar graphs often depict measures of central tendency, but they do so asymmetrically: A mean, for example, is depicted not by a point, but by the edge of a bar that originates from a single axis. Here we show that this graphical asymmetry gives rise to a corresponding cognitive asymmetry. When viewers are shown a bar depicting a mean value and are then asked to judge the likelihood of a particular data point being part of its underlying distribution, viewers judge points that

The sickening rug: a repeating static pattern that leads to motion-sickness-like symptoms.

The nauseogenic properties of a patterned rug that reputedly caused motion-sickness-like symptoms in those who viewed it was the topic of this study. Naive observers viewed a 1:1 scale image of the black-and-white patterned rug and a homogeneous gray region of equivalent luminance in a counterbalanced within-subjects design. After 5 min of viewing, symptoms were assessed with the simulator sickness questionnaire (SSQ), yielding a total SSQ score and sub-scores for nausea, oculomotor symptoms, and disorientation. All four scores were significantly higher in the rug condition. Observers also rep

A closed curve is much more than an incomplete one: effect of closure in figure-ground segmentation.

Detection of fragmented closed contours against a cluttered background occurs much beyond the local coherence distance (maximal separation between segments) of nonclosed contours. This implies that the extent of interaction between locally connected detectors is boosted according to the global stimulus structure. We further show that detection of a target probe is facilitated when the probe is positioned inside a closed circle. To explain the striking contour segregation ability found here, and performance enhancement inside closed boundaries, we propose the existence of a synergetic process i

Reading reversals and developmental dyslexia: a further study.

The pattern of errors in reading isolated words was studied in two groups of children with respect, particularly, to reversals of letter sequence and letter orientation. One group (the Institute group) consisted of children 8 to 10 years old who had been diagnosed "dyslexic" according to medical and psychoeducational criteria. The other (the School group) included all the children in a second-year elementary school class (see Liberman, Shankweiler, Orlando, Harris and Berti, 1971) who fell into the lowest third on a standard test of reading achievement. Although the Institute children were som
