Perceived Educational Needs of Substance Use Peer Support Specialists: A Qualitative Study.

The opioid crisis is an ever-growing issue nationwide. The role of peer support specialists has received widespread acceptance in the substance use and behavioral health spheres. However, there is a lack of standardization on the training required for peer support specialists to function as competent members of integrated behavioral health teams. We conducted qualitative focus groups with 14 practicing certified peer support specialists to determine their perceived educational needs. Inductive thematic analysis was used to analyze the data and six themes emerged: mental health and suicide prev

Sustainability & social segmentation in social media contagion: A mathematical and computational study on dual effects of individual needs & peer influence.

Addiction to internet-based social media has increasingly emerged as a critical social problem, especially among young adults and teenagers. Based on multiple research studies, excessive usage of social media may have detrimental psychological and physical impacts. In this study, we are going to explore mathematically the dynamics of social media addiction behavior and explore the determinants of compulsive use of social media from the dual perspectives of individual needs or cravings and peer-related factors or peer pressure. The theoretical analysis of the model without the peer pressure eff

Peer Influence and Use of Electronic Cigarettes among Adolescents and Young Adults: A Meta-Analysis of Prospective Studies.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between peer use and individual use of EC among adolescents and young adults. METHODS: We performed the search strategy on PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane. We selected prospective studies reporting adjusted odds ratio (aOR)/relative risk (aRR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) and conducted a random-effects meta-analysis. RESULT: Eleven prospective studies were included, involving 32,014 participants in the quantitative analysis. Meta-analysis results showed a significant association between EC use by friends and increased odds of individual EC use (aOR =

A Longitudinal Examination of Children's Friendships Across Racial Status and Gender and Their Intergroup Prosocial Behavior.

In this research, we examined (a) the primary effects of intergroup friendships: whether having a friend of a different gender/racial status benefits children's gender/racial status-based prosocial behavior and (b) the secondary transfer of intergroup friendships: whether friendships from one domain (e.g., gender) would extend to improved prosocial behavior toward outgroup members of another domain (e.g., race). Participants were 603 third- to fifth-grade students (Mage = 9.06, SD = .90; 47.9% girls; 52.4% racially minoritized). Peer nominations of prosocial behavior and friendships were colle

In the Field: Visiting Peer Institutions to Inform Pediatric Palliative Care Program Redevelopment.

CONTEXT: The heterogeneity of pediatric palliative care (PPC) programs presents challenges in forming a generalized model for growth. We developed and implemented a system to visit and learn from peer institutions to inform our own program's revision and expansion. OBJECTIVES: To describe the use of structured field trips to peer programs in North America to inform program development. METHODS: Our procedure involved three steps: First, "organization" included choosing visit sites, outreach and collaboration to plan logistics, development of a standardized approach, and creating inter-discip

Utilizing Peer Safety Companions to Prevent Suicide in Prisons.

A variety of strategies have been implemented to identify, target, and prevent suicide in correctional settings. In recent decades, some prisons have adopted policies that use other incarcerated individuals to support people who have been identified as being at high risk of suicide. There has been little research on these policies and, of the few studies that have been conducted, all have relied on data from a single facility. This study takes a national approach by exploring how many departments of corrections (DOCs) include incarcerated individuals as part of their suicide prevention strateg

Spread of gambling abstinence through peers and comments in online self-help chat forums to quit gambling.

Habit formation occurs in relation to peer habits and comments. This general principle was applied to gambling abstinence in the context of online self-help forums to quit gambling. Participants in this study, conducted between September 2008 and March 2020, were 161 abstinent and 928 non-abstinent gamblers who participated in online self-help chat forums to quit gambling. They received 269,317 comments during their first 3 years of forum participation. Gamblers had an increased likelihood of 3-year continuous gambling abstinence if they had many peers in the forums. However, they had a decrea

Scaling Up a Peer-Mediated Program Statewide: Lessons Learned Through Peer to Peer.

Peer-mediated interventions are a powerful and practical way of promoting the social relationships, learning, and inclusion of students with disabilities. In this article, we describe one state's efforts to scale up a research-based, peer-mediated program called Peer to Peer throughout Michigan. Among the more than 700 schools that now offer this program, as many as 18,000 peers are involved in supporting nearly 5,000 schoolmates with autism and other developmental disabilities in their learning and relationships. We share our perspectives on eight key factors that have contributed to the grow

Using the Double Diamond model to co-design a dementia caregivers telehealth peer support program.

We aimed to develop a telehealth peer support program for isolated dementia caregivers. This paper reports the co-design process by telehealth and the impact and experiences of participants. The Double Diamond model guided the co-design process, which has four phases, with participants reflecting on their caregiving experiences. Group meetings were recorded, notes compiled with inductive thematic analysis undertaken for phases one to three. Each phase findings were presented to the group for verification and refinement. Semi-structured interviews with participants were completed at the end of

A Longitudinal Qualitative Analysis of the Way Peer Support Specialist Roles Change Over Time in a Psychiatric Hospital Setting in Asia.

The current study seeks to determine how peer support roles change as peer support specialists' positions within organizations and departments mature. We followed ten peer support specialists over the course of a year, interviewing them at three points, starting approximately three months after they began working as peer support specialists. We used an inductive process to analyze our data and followed guidelines on the structuring of longitudinal qualitative trajectories to divide the data into watershed moments. Our participants worked in a variety of departments in the hospital, and their s

The relationship between working alliance with peer mentors and eating psychopathology in a digital 6-week guided self-help intervention for anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The quality of working alliance (WA) is associated with treatment outcomes across several types of psychiatric disorders and psychological interventions. This study examined the role of WA with peer mentors (people with lived experience of illness) and student mentors (graduated psychology students) in a 6-week, digital, guided self-help (GSH) intervention for anorexia nervosa. METHOD: Ninety-nine patients rated weekly, for 6 weeks: (a) eating psychopathology using the short version of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-QS) and (b) WA with a student mentor (n = 14)

'More than just chitchat': a qualitative study concerning the need and potential format of a peer mentor programme for patients with early rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Patients recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have specific educational and supportive needs. These could partly be addressed with mentoring by other patients living with RA. This qualitative study explores stakeholder perceptions towards peer mentoring in early RA care. METHODS: Two focus groups with patients with early RA (n=10), one with patient organisation representatives (n=5), one with rheumatologists (n=8) and one with rheumatology nurses (n=5) were held. Two patient research partners supported analysis and interpretation. RESULTS: Four overarching themes wer

Interest in peer support persons among patients experiencing early pregnancy loss.

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist regarding the type of support patients need when experiencing early pregnancy loss (EPL). The objective of this study is to explore how patients emotionally cope with EPL and to assess if there is interest in a peer EPL support program with a self-compassion component. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with patients who experienced EPL in the past two years. We evaluated the kinds of support that patients felt were most helpful, interest in a possible peer EPL support person, and suggestions for the creation of such a program. Content analysis was

Maximizing social model principles in residential recovery settings.

Peer support is integral to a variety of approaches to alcohol and drug problems. However, there is limited information about the best ways to facilitate it. The "social model" approach developed in California offers useful suggestions for facilitating peer support in residential recovery settings. Key principles include using 12-step or other mutual-help group strategies to create and facilitate a recovery environment, involving program participants in decision making and facility governance, using personal recovery experience as a way to help others, and emphasizing recovery as an interactio

Developing the therapeutic relationship: from 'expert' professional to 'expert' person who stutters.

UNLABELLED: This article looks back over the years and identifies some of the most influential thinkers, writers, and researchers who have had a profound effect on the way the therapy at the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering Children in London has evolved. It tracks the changes that have occurred in theoretical perspective, treatments offered, and the delivery of therapy. In particular this author is interested in the changing nature of the therapeutic relationship between professionals and people who stutter (PWS), and describes the way it has developed from the "expert professional" toward

Evolutionary dynamics in state-feedback public goods games with peer punishment.

Public goods game serves as a valuable paradigm for studying the challenges of collective cooperation in human and natural societies. Peer punishment is often considered an effective incentive for promoting cooperation in such contexts. However, previous related studies have mostly ignored the positive feedback effect of collective contributions on individual payoffs. In this work, we explore global and local state-feedback, where the multiplication factor is positively correlated with the frequency of contributors in the entire population or within the game group, respectively. By using repli

Networks of support: Microboards for children with intellectual disability.

Friendships are an important aspect of social inclusion and can have a positive influence on a child's social and emotional wellbeing beyond childhood. A Microboard is a formal approach to building supportive relationships for people with intellectual disability. Establishing a Microboard during childhood may facilitate a peer support network that endures into adulthood. However, there is limited empirical research exploring the role and design of Microboards in the lives of children with intellectual disability and therefore further research is needed.

Discipline and punishment in panoptical public goods games.

In Public Goods Games (PGG), the temptation to free-ride on others' contributions poses a significant threat to the sustainability of cooperative societies. Therefore, societies strive to mitigate this through incentive systems, employing rewards and punishments to foster cooperative behavior. Thus, peer punishment, in which cooperators sanction defectors, as well as pool punishment, where a centralized punishment institution executes the punishment, is deeply analyzed in previous works. Although the literature indicates that these methods may enhance cooperation on social dilemmas under parti

Meta-analysis of the relationship between bullying and depressive symptoms in children and adolescents.

Childhood and adolescence are critical periods for physical and mental development; thus, they are high-risk periods for the occurrence of mental disorders. The purpose of this study was to systematically evaluate the association between bullying and depressive symptoms in children and adolescents. We searched the PubMed, MEDLINE and other databases to identify studies related to bullying behavior and depressive symptoms in children and adolescents. A total of 31 studies were included, with a total sample size of 133,688 people. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the risk of depressi
