Temporary threshold shifts for masked pure tones. II. Broad-band masker.

The amount of temporary threshold shift (TTS) measured in a particular individual is dependent on several factors. One such factor is the pre-exposure hearing level of the subject. In this study, the contribution of this factor to the measured TTS was examined in 8 normal-hearing subjects. TTS measurements were made in unmasked and masked conditions following a 4-hour exposure to noise. The masked condition was designed to simulate a flat mild hearing loss. Results indicated that TTS observed under conditions of broad-band masking was reduced as compared to TTS for the unmasked condition. The

Speech acoustic-cue discrimination abilities of normally developing and language-impaired children.

The ability of 35 language impaired (LI) and 38 normally developing children between the ages of 5 and 8 1/2 yr to discriminate between speech stimuli, using an operantly conditioned, nonverbal motor response, was investigated. Six syllable contrasts ([ba] versus [da], [da] versus [ta], [epsilon] versus [ae], [dab] versus [daeb], [sa] versus [sta] and [sa] versus [integral a]) were selected to investigate discrimination of various temporal and spectral cues. Results demonstrated that the LI group made most errors discriminating syllables which were differentiated by consonants and fewest error

Remote masking in presbycusis.

Remote Masking (RM) (a rise in threshold for low-frequency tones when the ear is exposed to a high intensity noise band of high frequency) has been attributed to mechanical nonlinear distortion of the cochlear partition, as an effect of the envelope of a nonuniform signal. Clinical studies using RM have revealed RM is normal only when both the endolabyrinthine pressure and the cochlear hydrodynamics are normal. Increasing the stiffness of the cochlear partition affects adversely the mechanism of motion of the cochlear duct and reduces RM values. We studied RM in normal young Ss and in patients

Incomplete figure perception and invisible masking.

The Gollin test (measuring recognition thresholds for fragmented line drawings of everyday objects and animals) has traditionally been regarded as a test of incomplete figure perception or 'closure', though there is a debate about how such closure is achieved. Here, figural incompleteness is considered to be the result of masking, such that absence of contour elements of a fragmented figure is the result of the influence of an 'invisible' mask. It is as though the figure is partly obscured by a mask having parameters identical to those of the background. This mask is 'invisible' only conscious

Making perceptual learning practical to improve visual functions.

Task-specific improvement in performance after training is well established. The finding that learning is stimulus-specific and does not transfer well between different stimuli, between stimulus locations in the visual field, or between the two eyes has been used to support the notion that neurons or assemblies of neurons are modified at the earliest stage of cortical processing. However, a debate regarding the proposed mechanism underlying perceptual learning is an ongoing issue. Nevertheless, generalization of a trained task to other functions is an important key, for both understanding the

Enhanced Place Specificity of the Parallel Auditory Brainstem Response: A Modeling Study.

While each place on the cochlea is most sensitive to a specific frequency, it will generally respond to a sufficiently high-level stimulus over a wide range of frequencies. This spread of excitation can introduce errors in clinical threshold estimation during a diagnostic auditory brainstem response (ABR) exam. Off-frequency cochlear excitation can be mitigated through the addition of masking noise to the test stimuli, but introducing a masker increases the already long test times of the typical ABR exam. Our lab has recently developed the parallel ABR (pABR) paradigm to speed up test times by

Face perception loves a challenge: Less information sparks more attraction.

Examining hedonic questions of processing fluency, objective stimulus clarity, and goodness-of-fit in face perception, across three experiments (blur, contrast, occlusion) in which subjects performed the simple, natural task of rank-ordering faces by attractiveness, we find a very consistent and powerful effect of reduced visual input increasing perceived attractiveness. As images of faces are blurred (i.e., as higher spatial frequencies are lost, mimicking at-a-distance, eccentric, or otherwise unaccommodated viewing, tested down to roughly 6 cycles across the face), reduced in contrast (line

Effects of noise exposure on auditory brainstem response and speech-in-noise tasks: a review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Short-term noise exposure that induces transient changes in thresholds has induced permanent cochlear synaptopathy in multiple species. Here, the literature was reviewed to gain translational insight into the relationships between noise exposure, ABR metrics, speech-in-noise performance and TTS in humans. DESIGN: PubMed-based literature search, retrieval and review of full-text articles. STUDY SAMPLE: Peer-reviewed literature identified using PubMed search. RESULTS: Permanent occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is frequently accompanied by abnormal ABR amplitude and la

Possible Joint Involvement of the Cochlea and Semicircular Canals in the Perception of Low-Frequency Tinnitus, Also Called "The Hum" or "Taos Hum".

INTRODUCTION: "The hum" or "Taos hum" are common terms of a tinnitus with three remarkable features. OBJECTIVE: A possible common background is reevaluated for the three features of the hum: being sensitive on sound, head rotation, and long-distance air travel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Questionnaires that were originally developed by Frosch were recalculated concerning the question of hum interactions with sounds. The question was split into the two affirmative answers a) "masking", which corresponds to the overrule of the hum by a sound, and b) "beats", which correspond to a nonlinear interac

Masking Treatment and its Effect on Tinnitus Parameters.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus is described as the perception of sound without any external acoustic stimulation. Any pathology of auditory pathways or any system of the human body may result with tinnitus. The pathophysiology of tinnitus accompanying the disorders of auditory system is not fully understood and there is not any particular effective treatment method has been specified. Tinnitus masking therapy has been reported as an effective treatment modality in the treatment of tinnitus. In this study, the results of tinnitus masking treatment on the parameters were evaluated prospectively. PATIENTS

Importance of binaural hearing.

An essential task for the central auditory pathways is to parse the auditory messages sent by the two cochleae into auditory objects, the segregation and localisation of which constitute an important means of separating target signals from noise and competing sources. When hearing losses are too asymmetric, the patients face a situation in which the monaural exploitation of sound messages significantly lessens their performance compared to what it should be in a binaural situation. Rehabilitation procedures must aim at restoring as many binaural advantages as possible. These advantages encompa

Integration time for the perception of depth from motion parallax.

The perception of depth from relative motion is believed to be a slow process that "builds-up" over a period of observation. However, in the case of motion parallax, the potential accuracy of the depth estimate suffers as the observer translates during the viewing period. Our recent quantitative model for the perception of depth from motion parallax proposes that relative object depth (d) can be determined from retinal image motion (dθ/dt), pursuit eye movement (dα/dt), and fixation distance (f) by the formula: d/f≈dθ/dα. Given the model's dynamics, it is important to know the integration time

Visual masking approaches to visual awareness.

In visual masking, visible targets are rendered invisible by modifying the context in which they are presented, but not by modifying the targets themselves. Here I summarize a decade of experimentation using visual masking illusions in which my colleagues and I have begun to establish the minimal set of conditions necessary to maintain the awareness of the visibility of simple unattended stimuli. We have established that spatiotemporal edges must be present for targets to be visible. These spatiotemporal edges must be encoded by transient bursts of spikes in the early visual system. If these b

Impaired binaural hearing in children produced by a threshold level of middle ear disease.

Otitis media with effusion (OME), a form of middle ear disease, is the most common reason for young children both to visit their family doctor and to have surgery. Almost all children have at least a single episode of OME before their first birthday and annual incidence rates exceed 50% in each of the first five years. For most children, OME occurs infrequently, but about 10-15% of children have OME during more than half of their first six years. Middle ear effusions attenuate and delay sound, causing conductive sound distortion during the crucial years for language acquisition. The many studi

Effects of masker frequency and duration in forward masking: further evidence for the influence of peripheral nonlinearity.

Forward masking has often been thought of in terms of neural adaptation, with nonlinearities in the growth and decay of forward masking being accounted for by the nonlinearities inherent in adaptation. In contrast, this study presents further evidence for the hypothesis that forward masking can be described as a linear process, once peripheral, mechanical nonlinearities are taken into account. The first experiment compares the growth of masking for on- and off-frequency maskers. Signal thresholds were measured as a function of masker level for three masker-signal intervals of 0, 10, and 30 ms.

A comparison of efferent suppression of compound action potentials by simultaneous and non-simultaneous contralateral noise paradigms.

The intent of this study was to compare the effectiveness of continuous versus gated contralateral noise in producing efferent suppression of CAPs in guinea pigs. The average contralateral suppression was 2.0 dB when using gated noise, with ipsilateral tone-pip rates of 2 s(-1), and 1.4 dB when using continuous noise at an ipsilateral tone-pip rate of 31 s(-1). When the ipsilateral tone-pip rate employed in the simultaneous paradigm with continuous noise was reduced to 2 s(-1), a rate equivalent to that employed in the non-simultaneous paradigm, the average attenuation was 2.1 dB, a magnitude

Visual processing of verbal and nonverbal stimuli in adolescents with reading disabilities.

This study investigated whether a group of children with reading disabilities (RD) were slower at processing visual information in general (compared to a group of children of comparable age and a group of children of comparable reading level), or whether their deficit was specific to the written word. Computerized backward masking and temporal integration tasks were used to assess the speed of visual information processing. Stimulus complexity (simple, complex) and type (verbal, nonverbal) were varied, creating a 2 x 2 matrix of stimulus conditions: simple nonverbal, complex nonverbal, simple

Linearized response growth inferred from growth-of-masking slopes in ears with cochlear hearing loss.

Growth of masking for OFF-frequency conditions (probe frequency above the masker spectrum) and ON-frequency conditions (probe within the masker spectrum) was investigated using simultaneous masking in three subjects with normal hearing and nine subjects with high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. Growth-of-masking functions (probe thresholds as a function of masker intensity) for OFF-frequency conditions were obtained for probe tones placed at six frequencies above a 200-Hz-wide masker with an upper edge at 520 Hz. Growth-of-masking functions for ON-frequency conditions were obtained for p

Frequency selectivity and consonant recognition for hearing-impaired and normal-hearing listeners with equivalent masked thresholds.

Thresholds in notched-noise maskers (NN) and narrow-band maskers (NB) were measured for normal-hearing and hearing-impaired subject pairs who were listening in a background of spectrally shaped broadband noise (SSBB). Consonant recognition was also measured in SSBB. SSBB was adjusted so that thresholds in that noise for each normal-hearing/hearing-impaired subject pair were equal. Threshold and signal-level differences between subject pairs were minimized with the addition of threshold-elevating SSBB, and the presence of a noise background for both groups provided a comparable listening enviro

Dyslexic children learn a new visual strategy for reading: a controlled experiment.

Recent studies by Geiger, Lettvin and Zegarra-Moran have proposed a new non-reading test for the diagnosis of dyslexia, and a new method for remediation. The latter involves the learning of a "visual strategy". On adult dyslexics the test was reliable and the remediation apparently effective. The purpose of this study is to confirm the usefulness of the remediation and test with children. Dyslexic children (3rd-6th grade) were divided into two groups. The experimental group (9) was given a new remedial regimen of practise. The control group (6) continued the remedial process given in their sch
