Under observation were 17 patients with typhoid peritonitis. The authors describe some specific features of the clinical course of this complication. The necessary method of treatment is thought to be an urgent operation with suturing the perforated ulcer and peritonization of all the ulcers found or a resection of the injured portion of the intestine, peritoneal dialysis, drainage of the thoracic lymph duct and intensive transfusion therapy in the postoperative period. Eleven patients recovered, six patients died.

Two cases are reported exemplifying the difficulties faced in the clinical diagnosis of peritoneal tuberculosis. Two fertile-aged nulliparous females were admitted with symptoms and signs of an acute abdomen. Both showed a relative intestinal obstruction, abdominal mass and ascitic fluid. A malignant disease was suspected and laparotomy was performed. Tuberculous peritonitis was demonstrated histologically in biopsy and later confirmed by positive culture for tubercle bacilli. In the first case the correct diagnosis was disclosed during operation by frozen section, although the histological pi…

Contrary observations exist in the publications concerning the bile peritonitis. Therefore the effect of sterile bile in the peritoneal cavity was investigated in the white mouse. We had the following results: 1. The L.D. 50 will be obtained only by high bile concentrations. 2. The chemical bile effect is minimal on the visceral and parietal peritoneum in the early and late phase. 3. The bile peritonitis does not get infected in case of the intact gastrointestinal and biliary tract. There does not exist a so-called passing through peritonitis even with big bile quantities. 4. A reduction of th…

From 1966 to 1973, a total of 30 cases of tuberculous peritonitis were seen in Seattle-King County. Abdominal pain, swelling, and constitutional symptoms were the most frequent initial complaints. Radiographic abnormalities consistent with tuberculosis were present in 25 cases, and pulmonary disease was proven in ten. An initial tuberculin test with intermediate-strength purified protein derivative of tuberculin was negative in 19 of 27 patients. Six of 13 initial nonreactors still had negative reactions on repeat testing, and four appeared to be anergic when retested one to four months later.…

Six cases of neonatal primary peritonitis admitted to Ahmadu Bello Hospital, Zaria, between January 1972 and July 1973 are reported, of whom 4 survived. All patients had evidence of umbilical sepsis, while 2 had erythema marginatum, which has not previously been reported in this condition. The importance of peritoneal aspiration and x-ray of the abdomen in establishing the dignosis is stressed, as is prevention of umbilical sepsis by increased health education.
