Reciprocal associations among fear of failure, academic buoyancy, and academic procrastination in primary school students: a three-wave cross-lagged panel study.

Academic procrastination is common in late elementary school and is associated with lower academic achievement and poorer well-being. Drawing on achievement motivation theory, the Study Demands-Resources (SD-R) framework, academic buoyancy theory, and Conservation of Resources theory, this three-wave longitudinal study examined reciprocal associations among fear of failure, academic buoyancy, and academic procrastination in Grade 5-6 students (N = 542). Participants completed self-report measures of fear of failure, academic buoyancy, and academic procrastination at three time points across on

Opinion: Which animals have personality?

Human personality generally refers to coherent individuating patterns in affect, behavior, and cognition. We can only observe and measure behavior, from which we then infer personality and other psychological processes (affect, cognition, etc.). We emphasize that the study of personality always explains or summarizes patterns not only in behavior but also in these other psychological processes inferred from behavior. We thus argue that personality should be attributed only to nonhuman animals with behaviors from which we can infer a sufficiently rich set of psychological processes. The mere in

Time Since Injury Is Key to Modeling Trends in Aging and Overall Functioning of Persons With Spinal Cord Injury: A Longitudinal Analysis of a Swiss Community Survey.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to model the health indicator of functioning for persons with spinal cord injury or disorder living in Switzerland in the long-term context, considering chronological age, time since injury, and age at injury. DESIGN: This is a longitudinal analysis of three waves of a community survey. An interval-scaled functioning metric was constructed using modern test theory. Random effects within-between mixed models were used to investigate trends in functioning over time. RESULTS: Persons with complete injuries have lower levels of functioning than persons with inc

Compassionate Leadership in Healthcare: A Concept Analysis Using the Walker and Avant Method.

Compassionate leadership is an emerging approach in healthcare management that integrates compassion with leadership to support healthcare professionals and improve the quality of care. However, its conceptual boundaries and defining characteristics remain insufficiently established, limiting its consistent application and empirical evaluation. This study aimed to clarify the concept of compassionate leadership among healthcare providers using the Walker and Avant concept analysis method and to provide a conceptual foundation for its application in healthcare leadership, education, and practic

A 50-year personal odyssey through the story of learning disabilities: from primary school to adult LD diagnoses.

The problems with LD diagnosis are the logical consequence of a concept that, after 63 years, has never had a universally accepted definition or empirically validated diagnostic criteria. This essay is a personal odyssey over 50 years that explores the many problems with the LD concept and LD diagnosis that have affected my research, teaching, and clinical practice with children and adults. It is a critical, historical, and analytic journey about the LD story grounded in first-person clinical experience and explicit engagement with diagnostic theory that has implications for first-time adult L

Development and validation of a new instrument to measure perceived risks associated with the use of tobacco and nicotine-containing products.

BACKGROUND: Making tobacco products associated with lower risks available to smokers who would otherwise continue smoking is recognized as an important strategy towards addressing smoking-related harm. Predicting use behavior is an important major component of product risk assessment. In this context, risk perception is a possible factor driving tobacco product uptake and use. As prior to market launch real-world actual product use cannot be observed, assessing risk perception can provide predictive information. Considering the lack of suitable validated self-report instruments, the developmen

How many and what mechanisms are needed to explain self-regulatory functions in personality dynamics: Toward a model based on the Circumplex of Personality Metatraits.

We propose a model of basic self-regulatory mechanisms that integrates descriptive-structural and dynamic-explanatory approaches to personality. Using a structural way of thinking and based on a structural model of personality (the Circumplex of Personality Metatraits), we deduced two orthogonal (distinct) but interactive mechanisms: (a) Impulse Control responsible for controlling automatically activated impulses, urges, and affective reactions and (b) Self-Motivation responsible for regulating intentions in goal-oriented behaviors. Their operation depends on both situational and dispositional

'Part of my humanity left me the day I walked into medical school': Navigating medical students' identity dissonance through the medical humanities.

INTRODUCTION: Medical humanities curricula offer a lens for understanding how medical learners construct meaning and professional identity. While intended to cultivate patient-centered physicians, this process can provoke identity dissonance rooted in the hidden curriculum, leading learners to suppress, compartmentalize, or defer emotional engagement. This study examines how a medical humanities exercise shaped learners' reflections on identity dissonance, affect, and professional identity formation. Through qualitative analysis of reflective narratives, we explored how students interpreted te

Examining personal, organizational and technological factors on job performance: A study on law enforcement officers.

Despite substantial investments in information and communication technologies (ICTs), governments worldwide continue to face challenges in their effective implementation across public service departments. This study examines the personal, organizational, and technological determinants of Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) usage among police officers and its impact on job performance. Using quantitative survey data collected from 447 police officers across seven districts in Rajasthan, India, the research integrates the Big Five personality traits, the Unified Theory of Acc

"Not your normal drug dealing guy": How people who sell drugs construct positive narrative identities.

This study explores how persons who sell drugs construct positive narrative identities and thereby reject identities as "drug dealers" We inform our study with data collected via interviews with a group of 33 people actively involved in selling illicit drugs from St. Louis, Missouri, USA. We find that these participants create narratives wherein then frame their involvement in drug selling as a means to be "friends", "entrepreneurs", and "risk-managers". We discuss implications of these findings for criminological theories of neutralizations and restrictive deterrence. We also discuss implicat

A Neural Network Approach to Comparing AMPD and Object Relations Theory for Personality Disorder Assessment.

While prior research has explored the relationship between Object Relations Theory (ORT) and the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), comprehensive comparisons across diverse clinical populations and methodologies remain limited. This study investigated the predictive accuracy of AMPD and ORT in identifying personality psychopathology using neural network models within a mixed sample of 639 participants (229 non-clinical undergraduates, 410 psychiatric inpatients). Data were collected using Persian translations of the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Self-Report (LPFS-SR),

Theory of mind and verbal working memory deficits in parents of autistic children.

The objective of this study was to investigate the potential values of executive function and social cognition deficits as endophenotypes of autism. While theory of mind (ToM) is generally accepted as a unitary concept, some have suggested that ToM may be separated into two components (mental state reasoning and decoding). In this study, both aspects of ToM and verbal working memory abilities were investigated with relatively demanding tasks. The authors used a neurocognitive battery to compare the executive function and social cognition skills of 76 parents of autistic probands with 41 parent

Perception of human motion.

Humans, being highly social creatures, rely heavily on the ability to perceive what others are doing and to infer from gestures and expressions what others may be intending to do. These perceptual skills are easily mastered by most, but not all, people, in large part because human action readily communicates intentions and feelings. In recent years, remarkable advances have been made in our understanding of the visual, motoric, and affective influences on perception of human action, as well as in the elucidation of the neural concomitants of perception of human action. This article reviews tho

Self-awareness and the subconscious effect of personal pronouns on word encoding: a magnetoencephalography (MEG) study.

The effect of personal pronouns such as "ein" (German for "a"), "mein" (German for "my") and "sein" (German for "his") on the processing of associated nouns was investigated using MEG. Three different encoding strategies were provided in order to vary the level of consciousness involved in verbal information processing. A shallow (alphabetic), a deep (semantic) and a very deep (contextual) encoding instruction related to visual word presentation were given to all study participants. After the encoding of pronoun-noun pairs, recognition performances of nouns only were tested. The number of corr

Construct validity of the Italian version of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) v2.0.

In 2 studies, we assessed the construct validity of the Italian version of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) version 2.0. In Study 1, we administered the MSCEIT together with measures of crystallized and fluid intelligence, personality, and affect. In Study 2, we administered the MSCEIT together with indexes of dispositional coping, emotion regulation strategies, alexithymia, state-trait anxiety, depression, and depressive rumination. We evaluated the factorial structure of the MSCEIT with a confirmatory factor analysis model using data combined from Study 1 and 2.

On the Distinction Between Personal Standards Perfectionism and Excellencism: A Theory Elaboration and Research Agenda.

Research on perfectionism is flourishing, but the unspecified distinction between perfectionism and the pursuit of excellence is a lingering issue that urgently needs conceptual, theoretical, and empirical attention. In this article, excellence and perfection are defined as distinct goals that form the basis of two different but related constructs. To move this idea forward, the term excellencism is introduced. Perfectionism and excellencism are defined and their similarities and differences are illustrated using symbolic logic and adjectives from the English lexicon. A point is made to clearl

A DILEMMA-FOCUSED INTERVENTION FOR DEPRESSION: A MULTICENTER, RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL WITH A 3-MONTH FOLLOW-UP.

BACKGROUND: Since long ago it has been asserted that internal conflicts are relevant to the understanding and treatment of mental disorders, but little research has been conducted to support the claim. The aim of this study was to test the differential efficacy of group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) plus an intervention focused on the dilemma(s) detected for each patient versus group individual CBT plus individual CBT for treating depression. A comparative controlled trial with a 3-month follow-up was conducted. METHODS: One hundred twenty-eight adults meeting criteria for MDD and/or dys

A model to facilitate the mental health of psychiatric nurses in a forensic unit to manage mental health care users' hostile behaviour constructively.

BACKGROUND: Hostile behaviour by mental health care users (MHCUs) is prevalent in forensic units in South Africa, and this causes service providers distress and burnout. Psychiatric nurses (PNs) find it difficult to render quality care to MHCUs who are threatening them and also challenging their authority in a forensic unit. Forensic mental health care practitioners may be challenged to engage authentically with MHCUs who constitute a risk to their personal safety or who have committed acts the practitioner finds morally disturbing. There is a need to facilitate the mental health of PNs in a f

Improving diagnosis and treatment of knee osteoarthritis in persons with type 2 diabetes: development of a complex intervention.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) commonly co-occurs in people with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and increases the risk for diabetes complications, yet uptake of evidence-based treatment is low. We combined theory, stakeholder involvement and existing evidence to develop a multifaceted intervention to improve OA care in persons with T2DM. This was done in partnership with Arthritis Society Canada to leverage the existing infrastructure and provincial funding for community arthritis care. METHODS: Each step was informed by a User Advisory Panel of stakeholder representatives, includin

Evidence that specific personal relationships evoke maladaptive personality expression.

INTRODUCTION: This research applied relational regulation theory (RRT) to maladaptive personality as identified in the DSM-5, dimension trait model. RRT describes how individual social network members help people regulate their own affect, thought and action. Previous research found that people expressed different levels of normal personality dimensions and affect depending upon the network members that people were with or thinking about. METHODS: College students (N = 719) rated their expression of maladaptive dimensions and affect when with important network members, as well as the interper
