Several striking findings, related to biological effects of external acidity, are reviewed here. The first of these relates to the role of PhoE in the penetration of H+ and protonated metabolites into the cell. PhoE is an anion pore and would not be expected to take up protons. Canada imports approximately 300,000 honey bee queens annually to support the beekeeping industry, in addition to producing queens domestically during the short rearing season. Over 80% of imported queens come from the U.S., with additional contributions (~5% each) from Italy, Australia, and Chile. Sexual dimorphism is a crucial aspect of mating and reproduction in many animals, yet the molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Rapamycin is an immunosuppressant used for treating many types of diseases such as kidney carcinomas. A major C18-macrolide was found during analysis of the frass of the storage beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis to be (9Z,12Z,15R)-octadeca-9,12-dien-15-olide (10, cucujolide XI). The synthesis used ring-closing alkyne metathesis as a key step. The highly active 2,4,6-trimethylbenzylidyne molybdenum complex [MesCMo{OC(CF3)2Me}3] (12) allowed the use of a terminal alkyne and afforded the product in excellent yield. Bioassays proved the activity of the R-enantiomer 10 in the aggregation of the beetle. Cucujolide XI is the first macrolide pheromone oxidized at the ω-4 position.

A high-efficiency collection device for sex pheromones volatized from forcibly extruded female glands is described. Filtered nitrogen gas is the carrier and glass wool the adsorbent.
