Photoperiodism in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) with special reference to relative refractoriness.

Cloacal gland (an androgen dependent sex accessory) of Japanese quail exhibits full breeding condition as long as these were maintained unde … t days (< 14 hr) after 3 weeks of exposure to long daylength. Birds maintained under constant short photoperiod (LD 6:18) exhibited cyclicity. Shift experiments (quail reared and maintained under continuous light; LL, were shifted to LD 16:8, 13:11 and 8:16, similarly quail maintained under LD 16:8 were shifted to rest three photoperiods and so on) made to co …

Effects of thyroxine on the photoperiodic control of energy balance and reproductive status in Siberian hamsters.

Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus sungorus) exhibit a variety of seasonal responses when exposed to short days (SD), including decreases in body weight and fat, gonadal regression, and changes in several nonsteroid serum hormone concentrations. One such SD-induced hormonal change is a modest decrease in serum thyroxine (T4) concentrations. In an attempt to determine any underlying hormonal influences for the SD-induced decreases in body weight and fat, we investigated the possible role of T4 and triiodothyronine (T3). This potential paradoxical effect of these hormones on body weight and fa

Timing of photorefractoriness in the European starling: significance of photoperiod early and late in the reproductive cycle.

In European starlings, as in many other birds inhabiting higher latitudes, gonads develop in response to the increasing daylengths in early spring. Later in the year, however, the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis becomes refractory to the previously stimulatory long photoperiods and the gonads regress in summer. The present study addresses the question of when during the gonadal growth phase photorefractoriness is determined. A 13-h photoperiod induces testicular development and subsequent testicular regression associated with refractoriness in male starlings. An 11-h photoperiod, in contras…

Pineal melatonin mediates photoperiodic control of pulsatile luteinizing hormone secretion in the ewe.

Seasonal breeding in the ewe is regulated by photoperiod through a pineal-dependent mechanism. Changes in the ability of estradiol to inhibit tonic LH secretion are critical. During anestrus, this ovarian steroid gains the ability to slow the frequency of pulsatile LH secretion through an action on the brain. Exposure of ovariectomized, estradiol-implanted ewes to short photoperiods during summer anestrus revealed that daylength can control LH pulse frequency. After removal of estradiol, LH pulse frequency still differed between long- and short-day ewes, suggesting photoperiodic modulation of …

Serum levels of gonadotrophins in hamsters exposed to short photoperiods: effects of adrenalectomy and ovariectomy.

Female hamsters rendered acyclic by exposure to short photoperiods (10 h light: 14 h darkness) showed diurnal surges of both LH and FSH which persisted after removal of the ovaries and adrenal glands. The reduced increase in gonadotrophin secretion after ovariectomy, typical of hamsters exposed to short days, was also not contingent upon the presence of the adrenal glands. The results demonstrate that 'supersensitivity' of the neuroendocrine axis to feedback of ovarian or adrenal steroids cannot fully account for either the daily surges of gonadotrophins or the diminished response of LH and FS…

Both semi-dwarf and photoperiod-insensitive traits in rice were important for the Green Revolution.

BACKGROUND: The semi-dwarf high-yielding rice (Oryza sativa) variety IR8 was the major modern line that gave rise to the “Green Revolution” … f-function sd1–hd1 genotype was central to the development of high-yielding, lodging-resistant, and photoperiod-insensitive rice varieties. These findings provide a comprehensive framework for understanding key Green Revolution genes and offer guidance for future rice improvement and genome-editing strategies.

Photoperiod-dependent effects of (poly)phenol-rich extracts from seasonal fruits on the serum metabolome.

Seasonal rhythms are a recognised environmental factor affecting metabolism and health. In turn, phenolic compounds are recognised for their health-promoting properties and potential to influence biological rhythms. This work aimed to assess whether metabolic differences between seasons condition the response to dietary (poly)phenols. We exposed Fischer 344 male rats to short and long photoperiods simulating winter and summer, respectively. Eight different (poly)phenol-rich fruit extracts (FE) were administered, four obtained from spring-summer fruits and four of autumn-winter harvest fruits. …

Interaction Between Photoperiod and Sex on Hepatic Lipid Homeostasis in Rats Fed an Obesogenic Diet.

Seasonal changes in day length as well as sex are critical factors influencing metabolic processes. However, their combined impact on liver lipid metabolism under obesogenic conditions remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the interaction between sex and photoperiod on liver lipid homeostasis in obese Fischer 344 (F344) rats, with a special emphasis on the underlying molecular mechanisms. To this aim, male and female rats were fed with a cafeteria diet (CAF) for 11 weeks and exposed to either long (L18, 18 h of light/day) or short (L6, 6 h of light/day) photoperiods for the last 8 we…

Light Flux Density and Photoperiod Affect Growth and Secondary Metabolism in Fully Expanded Basil Plants.

Indoor production of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is influenced by light spectrum, photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), and the photoperiod. To investigate the effects of different lighting on growth, chlorophyll content, and secondary metabolism, basil plants were grown from seedlings to fully expanded plants in microcosm devices under different light conditions: (a) white light at 250 and 380 μmol·m-2·s-1 under 16/8 h light/dark and (b) white light at 380 μmol·m-2·s-1 under 16/8 and 24/0 h light/dark. A higher yield was recorded under 380 μmol·m-2·s-1 compared to 250 μmol·m-2·s-1 (fresh…

Short-active gestational photoperiod reduces effortful choice behavior in mice, partial normalization by d-amphetamine.

RATIONALE: Seasonal birth patterns consistently implicate winter gestation as a risk factor for several psychiatric conditions. We recently demonstrated that short-active (SA; 19:5 light:dark)-i.e., "winter-like"-photoperiod exposure across gestation and early life (E0-P28) induces psychiatrically relevant behavioral abnormalities in adult mice, including reduced immobility in the forced swim test (FST) and effortful amotivation. It is unknown, however, whether these effects were driven primarily by prenatal or postnatal mechanisms, and whether perinatal SA photoperiod would similarly reduce e…

Identification of photoperiod-induced specific miRNAs in the adrenal glands of Sunite sheep (Ovis aries).

In seasonal estrus, it is well known that melatonin-regulated biorhythm plays a key role. Some studies indicate that the adrenal gland plays an important role in reproduction in mammals, but the molecular mechanism is not clear. This study used an artificially controlled light photoperiod model, combined with RNA-seq technology and bioinformatics analysis, to analyze the messenger RNA (mRNA) and microRNA (miRNA) of ewe (Sunite) adrenal glands under different photoperiod treatments. After identification, the key candidate genes GRHL2, CENPF, FGF16 and SLC25A30 that photoperiod affects reproduct…

Silk sericin alleviates aberrant photoperiod-induced alterations in testicular and adrenal steroidogenesis in adult mice.

BACKGROUND: Steroidogenesis is a complex process of sequential enzymatic reactions affected by climate change. Animals respond to altered day length, the so-called photoperiod, with changes in physiology. The study aimed to an evaluation of sericin effect in alleviating steroidogenesis disorders induced by disturbed photoperiod in mice. METHODS: The animals were randomly divided into three groups according to the lighting cycle: a control group with a standard 12Light:12Dark cycle, a short-term photoperiod group with a 6Light:18Dark cycle, and a long-term photoperiod group with an 18Light:6Da…

Possible mechanisms of weight loss of Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus sungorus) exposed to short photoperiod.

Several weeks of short day photoperiod (SD) exposure promote a dramatic decrease of white adipose tissue (WAT) mass in Siberian hamsters(Phodopus sungorus sungorus). This slimming effect is accompanied by changes in the adipocyte responsiveness to adrenergic stimulation that are still under debate. We investigated whether possible changes in the antilipolytic responses, and/or lipogenic activities could be involved in such lipid deposition/mobilisation imbalance. Male Siberian hamsters were exposed for 11 weeks to SD or long day photoperiod and basal or stimulated lipolytic and lipogenic activ…

Effect of acute and chronic photoperiod modulation on pentylenetetrazole-induced clonic seizure threshold in mice.

Changes in circadian rhythms have been shown to alter seizure susceptibility and anticonvulsant properties of drugs. The present study attempts to elucidate the effect of acute and chronic light/dark (LD) cycle alterations on pentylenetetrazol-induced clonic seizure threshold (CST) in male NMRI mice. The acute effect was tested by comparing the effects of abrupt 6-h phase shifts that resulted in 6-h and 18-h photoperiods, during the 24-h period before CST determination, with the controls that were maintained on 12h/12h LD cycle. In order to test the effect of chronic LD cycle alteration on CST…

Pineal-dependent and -independent effects of photoperiod on immune function in Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus).

Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) exhibit reproductive and immunological responses to photoperiod. Short (<10-h light/day) days induce gonadal atrophy, increase leukocyte concentrations, and attenuate thermoregulatory and behavioral responses to infection. Whereas hamster reproductive responses to photoperiod are dependent on pineal melatonin secretion, the role of the pineal in short-day induced changes in immune function is not fully understood. To examine this, adult hamsters were pinealectomized (PINx) or sham-PINx, and transferred to short days (9-h light/day; SD) or kept in their nat…
