Additional Benefits of Repeated-Sprint Training With Prolonged End-Expiratory Breath Holding for Improving Repeated-Sprint Ability in Semiprofessional Soccer Players.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of running repeated-sprint training with voluntary hypoventilation at low lung volume (RSH-VHL) including prolonged end-expiratory breath holding (EEBH) on running repeated-sprint ability (RSA). METHODS: Twenty semiprofessional male soccer players completed 12 sessions of repeated 50-m running sprints over a 6-week period either with EEBH (RSH-VHL, n = 10) or with normal breathing (RSN, n = 10). Before (Pre) and after (Post) training, a running RSA test consisting of performing maximum 30-m "all-out" sprints until task failure, with a minimum of 10 sprints,

Effects of Complex Training on Sprint Acceleration and Neuromuscular Performance in Young Male Sprinters: A Comparison Between Incline and Level Speed Bounding.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of complex training (CT) with inclined versus horizontal speed bounding on sprint acceleration ability and neuromuscular performance in youth male sprinters. METHODS: Thirty male sprinters 14 to 16 years of age were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 groups (n = 10/group): CT with incline speed bounding, CT with horizontal speed bounding, or control (CON). Both intervention groups completed 3 repetitions of back-squat exercise (85% 1-repetition maximum), followed by speed bounding on either a 9° or 0° platform, twice weekly for 6 weeks in addit

Multifractality of stride-to-stride variations in adolescent runners is sensitive to endurance training.

This study investigated the impact of training on stride-to-stride variations in adolescent runners. It was hypothesised that training would significantly affect the magnitude and temporal structure of stride-to-stride variability during running. Twelve competitive adolescent runners (age: 16.3 ± 0.81) performed two 8-minute all-out running tests on a 400-m track, once at the start of the off-season (R1) and again after 6 weeks of structured training (R2). The study measured stride variability using the coefficient of variation (CV), monofractal analysis (DFA-α), and multifractal spectrum metr

Acute effect of running retraining interventions on low & high-frequency components of the impact signals.

Running-related injuries (RRIs) have been linked to high-frequency components of impact-related variables. The influence of running retraining interventions on low- (LoF) and high-frequency (HiF) components of impact-related variables remains unexplored. This study investigated the effects of different retraining strategies on LoF and HiF components of impact-related variables. Twenty-six habitual rearfoot runners completed four overground running conditions: no instructions (CON), forefoot strike (FOR), increased cadence by 10% (CAD), and a combination of both (CADFOR). Three-dimensional kine

Enhancing Sprint Performance and Biomechanics in Semiprofessional Football Players Through Repeated-Sprint Training.

Repeated-sprint ability is a significant factor in football performance. Notably, hamstring injuries in football players often occur during sprinting activities and fatigue-inducing conditions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the impact of repeated-sprint training (RST) on repeated-sprint ability variables and sprint kinematics. Fourteen semiprofessional men's soccer players performed 8 weeks of RST, consisting of 1 to 2 sets of 5 to 8 × 30 m repeated sprints separated by 20 to 30 seconds of recovery. Sprint performance was computed from running speed data, and a high-frequency

Exercise in neuromuscular disorders: a promising intervention.

Although performing exercise studies in patients with neuromuscular disorders (NMD) is difficult, the number of randomized controlled trials is steadily increasing. There is growing evidence for a positive effect of aerobic exercise in several NMD, on the other hand, the evidence for the effect of strength training is still scarce. Many NMD patients are captured in a vicious circle of physical inactivity, and it is important to let patients adhere to an active lifestyle, in order to prevent further chronic cardiovascular and muscle deconditioning and increased cardiovascular health risks. Brachymetatarsia as a Source of Pain in a US Military Trainee.

A 19-year-old female US Army trainee presented to a direct-access physical therapy clinic reporting 1 week of bilateral dorsal foot pain that was worse on the right than the left side. Due to swelling, focal tenderness, and pain, the physical therapist ordered radiographs to evaluate for a potential stress fracture. The radiographs revealed that the fourth metatarsals were notably shorter than the others, but were negative for other pathology. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2018;48(11):904. doi:10.2519/jospt.2018.7522.

Japanese macaque phonatory physiology.

Although the call repertoire and its communicative function are relatively well explored in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), little empirical data are available on the physics and the physiology of this species' vocal production mechanism. Here, a 6 year old female Japanese macaque was trained to phonate under an operant conditioning paradigm. The resulting 'coo' calls and spontaneously uttered 'growl' and 'chirp' calls were recorded with sound pressure level (SPL) calibrated microphones and electroglottography (EGG), a non-invasive method for assessing the dynamics of phonation. A total of

Physics of nail conditions: why do ingrown nails always happen in the big toes?

Although surgical treatment of nail conditions can be traced back centuries to the writings of Paul Aegineta (625-690 AC), little is known about the physical laws governing nail growth. Such a poor understanding together with the increasing number of nail salons in the high street should raise legitimate concerns regarding the different procedures applied to nails. An understanding of the physics of nail growth is therefore essential to engage with human medicine and to understand the aetiology of nail conditions. In this context, a theory of nail plate adhesion, including a physical descripti

Autonomic modulations of heart rate variability are associated with sports injury incidence in sprint swimmers.

OBJECTIVES: Young athletes' participation in competitive sports is becoming increasingly common, and this increased involvement raises concerns about the occurrence of overtraining and sports injuries. Since these issues are poorly understood, this study analyzed heart rate variability, stress/recovery relationship, and sports injury incidence during a training macrocycle of young sprint and endurance swimmers. METHODS: Thirty teenage swimmers (aged 12 to 17 years) were divided into two groups as follows: Sprint (n = 17) and Endurance (n = 13). Subjects were evaluated over 20 weeks, based on

Monitoring weekly heart rate variability in futsal players during the preseason: the importance of maintaining high vagal activity.

This study aimed to compare the weekly natural log of the root-mean-square difference of successive normal inter-beat (RR) intervals (ln RMSSDWeekly) and its coefficient of variation (ln RMSSDCV) in response to 5 weeks of preseason training in professional male futsal players. A secondary aim was to assess the relationship between ln RMSSDWeekly and ln RMSSDCV. The ln RMSSD is a measure of cardiac-vagal activity, and ln RMSSDCV represents the perturbations of cardiac autonomic homeostasis, which may be useful for assessing how athletes are coping with training. Ten futsal players had their res

How Effective Is Initial Military-Specific Training in the Development of Physical Performance of Soldiers?

The impact of basic military training (BMT) on recruit physical performance is well described. However, initial employment training (IET), the period immediately after BMT, is the final preparatory step before posting to an operational unit. There is limited evidence on the influence of this training in developing the physical attributes necessary for military duty. Therefore, this investigation determined the relative contribution of BMT and IET to develop physical capability in soldiers. Fifty-one soldiers (45 men and 6 women) were assessed at 4 time points: commencement of training (week 1)

Improved spatial memory for physical versus virtual navigation.

Objective. Virtual reality (VR) has become a key tool for researching spatial memory. Virtual environments offer many advantages for research in terms of logistics, neuroimaging compatibility etc. However, it is well established in animal models that the lack of physical movement in VR impairs some neural representations of space, and this is considered likely to be true in humans as well. Furthermore, it is unclear how big the disruptive effect stationary navigation is-how much does physical movement during encoding and recall affect human spatial memory and representations of space? What eff

From Populations to Programming Variables: Post-Activation Performance Enhancement Following Isometric Contractions on Muscular Strength and Power-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Isometric contraction (ISO) has emerged as a potentially effective conditioning activity (CA) for inducing post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE). However, findings regarding its effects on subsequent muscular strength and power remain inconsistent, and the participant- and protocol-related characteristics associated with more favorable responses remain unclear. This systematic-review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the acute effects of ISO on subsequent muscular strength and power, compared ISO with control (CON) and dynamic isotonic contraction (DYN) conditions, and explore chara
