Cortical activity evoked by voice pitch changes: A combined fNIRS and EEG study.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG) data were simultaneously obtained from normal-hearing listeners presented with continuous natural vowel sequences to study the interrelation of the haemodynamic and electrophysiological cortical responses evoked by voice pitch changes. fNIRS topographies and distributed ERP source reconstructions both indicated additional activity in the right superior temporal cortex if the prosodic contours varied between successive vowels, rather than being the same throughout the sequences. The source-level ERPs furthermore reve

Two-tone distortion on the basilar membrane of the chinchilla cochlea.

Basilar membrane responses to pairs of tones were measured, with the use of a laser velocimeter, in the basal turn of the cochlea in anesthetized chinchillas. Frequency spectra of basilar membrane responses to primary tones with frequencies (f1, f2) close to the characteristic frequency (CF) contain prominent odd-order two-tone distortion products (DPs) at frequencies both higher and lower than CF (such as 2f1-f2, 3f1-2f3, 2f2-f1 and 3f2-2f1). For equal-level primaries with frequencies such that 2f1-f2 equals CF, the magnitude of the 2f1-f2 DP grows with primary level at linear or faster rates

Effects of unilateral and bilateral cochlea removal on 2-deoxyglucose patterns in the chick auditory system.

The 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) method was used to map functional activity in the auditory system of chicks that had been subjected to unilateral or bilateral cochlea removal. Following survival times of 1 day to 4 weeks, chicks were exposed to continuous white noise in the 2DG experiments. In monaural subjects nucleus angularis and nucleus magnocellularis showed faint 2DG uptake on the side contralateral to the intact ear. In the binaural nucleus laminaris, the asymmetrical and almost mirror-imaged labeling pattern (Lippe, Stewart, and Rubel: Brain Res. 196:43-58, '80) was produced. The superior oli

[The promontory test and electrocochleography in deafness caused by mumps].

Contradictory histological findings in patients with deafness following mumps led us to conduct electrophysiological investigations. Promontory testing (PT) and measurement of cochlear microphonics (CM) enabled us to distinguish between neural and sensory deafness. On the basis of a careful history and serological tests in 19 cases of unilateral deafness we found that the hearing loss was probably caused by mumps. In all patients except one auditory sensations could be obtained by electric stimulation of the acoustic nerve whereas no CM were detectable even with strong stimuli of 100 dB tonepi

Effects of noise frequency on performance and annoyance for women and men.

Effects of noise frequencies on both performance on a complex psychomotor task and annoyance were investigated for men (n = 30) and women (n = 30). Each subject performed a complex psychomotor task for 50 min. in the presence of low frequency noise, high frequency noise, or ambient noise. Women and men learned the task at different rates. Little effect of noise was shown. Annoyance ratings were subsequently obtained from each subject for noise of various frequencies by the method of magnitude estimation. High frequency noises were more annoying than low frequency noises regardless of sex and i

Development of a Pitch Discrimination Screening Test for Preschool Children.

BACKGROUND: There is a critical need for tests of auditory discrimination for young children as this skill plays a fundamental role in the development of speaking, prereading, reading, language, and more complex auditory processes. Frequency discrimination is important with regard to basic sensory processing affecting phonological processing, dyslexia, measurements of intelligence, auditory memory, Asperger syndrome, and specific language impairment. PURPOSE: This study was performed to determine the clinical feasibility of the Pitch Discrimination Test (PDT) to screen the preschool child's a

Frequency following responses and rate change complexes in cochlear implant users.

The upper limit of rate-based pitch perception and rate discrimination can differ substantially across cochlear implant (CI) users. One potential reason for this difference is the presence of a biological limitation on temporal encoding in the electrically-stimulated auditory pathway, which can be inherent to the electrical stimulation itself and/or to the degenerative processes associated with hearing loss. Electrophysiological measures, like the electrically-evoked frequency following response (eFFR) and auditory change complex (eACC), could potentially provide valuable insights in the tempo…

Is it impossible to acquire absolute pitch in adulthood?

Absolute pitch (AP) refers to the rare ability to name the pitch of a tone without external reference. It is widely believed to be only for the selected few with rare genetic makeup and early musical training during the critical period, and therefore acquiring AP in adulthood is impossible. Previous studies have not offered a strong test of the effect of training because of issues like small sample size and insufficient training. In three experiments, adults learned to name pitches in a computerized, gamified and personalized training protocol for 12 to 40 hours, with the number of pitches gra

How do clarinet players adjust the resonances of their vocal tracts for different playing effects?

In a simple model, the reed of the clarinet is mechanically loaded by the series combination of the acoustical impedances of the instrument itself and of the player's airway. Here we measure the complex impedance spectrum of players' airways using an impedance head adapted to fit inside a clarinet mouthpiece. A direct current shunt with high acoustical resistance allows players to blow normally, so the players can simulate the tract condition under playing conditions. The reproducibility of the results suggest that the players' "muscle memory" is reliable for this task. Most players use a sing

Parental vocalizations and perceived immaturity in down syndrome.

Previous findings suggest that children with Down syndrome may be perceived as more youthful than other children with mental retardation. In this study whether perceptions of youthfulness can be linked to parenting behavior, in particular increased prosodic adjustments characteristic of infant-directed speech, is investigated. The prosodic characteristics of parental language targeted to children with Down syndrome and children with other etiologies of mental retardation were compared. Results show that parents of children with Down syndrome raised their voice pitch significantly more (i.e., s

Evaluating the Precision of Auditory Sensory Memory as an Index of Intrusion in Tinnitus.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of measures of auditory short-term memory (ASTM) to provide a clinical measure of intrusion in tinnitus. DESIGN: Response functions for six normal listeners on a delayed pitch discrimination task were contrasted in three conditions designed to manipulate attention in the presence and absence of simulated tinnitus: (1) no-tinnitus, (2) ignore-tinnitus, and (3) attend-tinnitus. RESULTS: Delayed pitch discrimination functions were more variable in the presence of simulated tinnitus when listeners were asked to divide attenti

Imitation of Multisyllabic Items by Children With Developmental Language Disorder: Evidence for Word-Level Atypical Speech Envelope and Pitch Contours.

PURPOSE: Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a multifaceted disorder. Recently, interest has grown in prosodic aspects of DLD, but most investigations of possible prosodic causes focus on speech perception tasks. Here, we focus on speech production from a speech amplitude envelope (AE) perspective. Perceptual studies have indicated a role for difficulties in AE processing in DLD related to sensory/neural processing of prosody. We explore possible matching AE difficulties in production. METHOD: Fifty-seven children with and without DLD completed a computerized imitation task, copying alou

Tonal Tinnitus Does Not Interfere with Tone Detection at the Tinnitus Pitch-Matched Frequency.

Individuals with tinnitus hear sounds that are not present in the external environment. Whereas hearing difficulties at frequencies near those matching the tinnitus pitch are a common complaint for individuals with tinnitus, it is unclear to what extent the internal tinnitus sounds interfere with the detection of external sounds. We therefore studied whether pure-tone detection at the estimated frequency corresponding to the tinnitus pitch (ftp) was affected by confusion with the tinnitus percept. Signs of confusion would be a high false alarm rate or a shallower slope of the psychometric func

Age-related changes in acoustic cue use for speech-in-speech perception.

Acoustic cues such as pitch and spatial location allow listeners to attend to a target speaker and ignore competing talkers, aiding speech recognition in background noise. Diminished ability to utilize acoustic cues for speech stream segregation may thus contribute to older adults' challenges hearing in noise. Adults aged 18-74 completed a speech-in-speech identification task with three conditions containing 1) only pitch cues (fundamental frequency), 2) only spatial cues (interaural time differences; ITDs), or 3) both pitch and spatial cues for segregating a target talker from competing talke

Furthermore, the contribution of degraded neural synchrony (as indexed by the FFR) to the pitch perception impairments of older listeners and those with hearing loss is not well known. Here, the relation between the FFR and pure-tone frequency discrimination was investigated in listeners with a wide range of ages and absolute thresholds, to assess the re …

The ongoing search for cochlear synaptopathy in humans: Masked thresholds for brief tones in Threshold Equalizing Noise.

This study aimed to advance towards a clinical diagnostic method for detection of cochlear synaptopathy with the hypothesis that synaptopathy should be manifested in elevated masked thresholds for brief tones. This hypothesis was tested in tinnitus sufferers, as they are thought to have some degree of synaptopathy. Near-normal-hearing tinnitus sufferers and their matched controls were asked to detect pure tones with durations of 5, 10, 100, and 200 ms presented in low- and high-level Threshold Equalizing Noise. In addition, lifetime noise exposure was estimated for all participants. Contrary t

Neural correlates of rapid spectrotemporal processing in musicians and nonmusicians.

Our results suggest that musical training alters the functional anatomy of rapid spectrotemporal processing, resulting in improved behavioral performance along with a more efficient functional network primarily involving traditional language regions. This finding may have important implications for improving language/reading skills, especially in children struggling with dyslexia.
