The microbiota is being increasingly recognized for its ability to regulate host physiology through the production of small bioactive molecules. However, how host-derived nutrients are metabolically transformed by root-associated microbes to influence plant immunity remains poorly understood. Here, we show that vitamin B3 (VB3; niacin) secreted by plant roots shapes the assembly of a functionally specialized root microbiota, which, in turn, metabolizes VB3 into an immune-active signal that enhances plant disease resistance. VB3 secretion selectively increases the abundance of root-associated b

Cadmium is a nonessential trace metal and a frequent soil contaminant. Because plants vary in their accumulation of Cd, an understanding of the specific processes that control uptake could reveal methods for reducing Cd levels in edible plant tissues and conversely increasing Cd accumulation in plants used for phytoremediation. Phytosiderophores are iron chelators excreted by graminaceous plants under conditions of iron limitation, but they also complex other metals including cadmium. Here we examine the influence of Cd exposure on phytosiderophore production by hydroponically grown maize. Cd

The rise of drug resistance to antivirals poses a significant global concern for public health; therefore, there is a pressing need to identify novel compounds that can effectively counteract strains resistant to current antiviral treatments. In light of this, researchers have been exploring new approaches, including the investigation of natural compounds as alternative sources for developing potent antiviral therapies. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the antiviral properties of the organic-soluble fraction of a root exudate derived from the tomato plant Solanum lycopersicum in the context o

Plants rely on plant-microbiota interactions to balance growth, defence, and metabolism under stress. Still, the mechanisms governing growth-resistance-quality trade-offs in the shade-tolerant medicinal herb Pseudostellaria heterophylla in understory cultivation systems remain unclear. Here, we integrated phenotypic/photosynthetic/quality assays, rhizosphere microbiome sequencing, leaf transcriptomics, and plant-microbe co-culture experiments to study responses to graded shading. Shading enhanced yield and disease resistance, reshaped the microbiome (enriching beneficial taxa, suppressing path

Plant genetic variation affects root phenotype and exudate composition, making it a pivotal factor in host-specific rhizosphere effects. Here we compare the rhizosphere microbiome of banana (Musa spp.) diploid cultivars (AA and BB), triploid cultivars derived from genome hybridizations into autotriploid cultivars (AAA), and various allotriploid cultivars (AAB and ABB) grown under field conditions to assess the influence of genome and subgenome type on the rhizosphere microbial community. Our study revealed that rhizosphere microbiomes of banana plants are significantly affected by banana genom

While of lesser prevalence than boron (B) deficient soils, B-rich soils are important to study as they can cause B toxicity in the field and subsequently decrease crop yields in different regions of the world. We have conducted the present study to examine the role of the individual or combined application of silicon (Si) and NPK fertilizer in B-stressed spinach plants (Spinacia oleracea L.). S. oleracea seedlings were subjected to different NPK fertilizers, namely, low NPK (30 kg ha-2) and normal NPK (60 kg ha-2)], which were also supplemented by Si (3 mmol L-1), for varying levels of B in th

Rhizobacteria-induced systemic resistance (ISR) is an established strategy for enhancing plant tolerance to biotic stress, yet its metabolic consequences under nanoparticle-assisted delivery remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated metabolic reprogramming in tomato roots (Solanum lycopersicum L.) challenged with the pathogen Erwinia persicina following treatment with PGPR strain Stenotrophomonas rhizophila (Sr) applied either alone or conjugated to phycosynthesized gold nanoparticles using Caulerpa sertularioides. Bionanogold synthesis was confirmed by UV-Visible surface plasmon resonan

Exotic plant invasions and increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration have been determined to independently affect soil nematodes, a key component of soil biota. However, little is known about the long-term effects of these two global change factors and their interactive effects. Over three consecutive years, we cultivated invasive alien plant Xanthium strumarium and its two phylogenetically related natives under both ambient (aCO2) and elevated (eCO2) atmospheric CO2 concentrations, and determined the effects of the invader and natives on soil nematodes under different CO2 conce

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is a fundamental evolutionary process that plays a key role in bacterial evolution. The likelihood of a successful transfer event is expected to depend on the precise balance of costs and benefits resulting from pathway acquisition. Most experimental analyses of HGT have focused on phenotypes that have large fitness benefits under appropriate selective conditions, such as antibiotic resistance. However, many examples of HGT involve phenotypes that are predicted to provide smaller benefits, such as the ability to catabolize additional carbon sources. We have exper

Plants experience constant exposed to diverse abiotic stresses throughout their growth and development stages. Given the burgeoning world population, abiotic stresses pose significant challenges to food and nutritional security. These stresses are complex and influenced by both genetic networks and environmental factors, often resulting in significant crop losses, which can reach as high as fifty percent. To mitigate the effects of abiotic stresses on crops, various strategies rooted in crop improvement and genomics are being explored. In particular, the utilization of biostimulants, including

Microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) suppress growth and virulence traits of soil-borne pathogens, yet their ecological roles in disease suppression remain unclear. Here, we show that the sesquiterpene humulene from Streptomyces acts as a multifunctional regulator that suppresses bacterial wilt through coordinated inhibition of Ralstonia solanacearum, plant metabolic reprogramming, and rhizosphere microbiome modulation. We combined in vitro pathogen assays, pot experiments, microbiota transplantation, rhizosphere 16S rRNA profiling, root-exudate metabolomics, and plant and pathogen tra

Agrobacterium tumefaciens causes crown gall disease. Although Agrobacterium can be popularly used for genetic engineering, the influence of aboveground insect infestation on Agrobacterium induced gall formation has not been investigated. Nicotiana benthamiana leaves were exposed to a sucking insect (whitefly) infestation and benzothiadiazole (BTH) for 7 d, and these exposed plants were inoculated with a tumorigenic Agrobacterium strain. We evaluated, both in planta and in vitro, how whitefly infestation affects crown gall disease. Whitefly-infested plants exhibited at least a two-fold reductio

The arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is the most widespread mutualistic association between plants and fungi. The most widely recognized benefit of AM symbiosis for the host plant is a significant enhancement in the acquisition of mineral nutrients from the soil, particularly phosphorus. In addition to improved nutrition, AM symbiosis confers enhanced tolerance to a wide range of environmental stresses. Strigolactones (SLs) are a family of natural products produced by plants as shoot branching factors and are responsible for the induction of hyphal branching in arbuscular mycorrhizal fung

The therapeutic efficiency of plant extracts has been limited by their poor pharmaceutical availability. Hydrogels have promising potential to be applied as wound dressings due to their high capacity to absorb exudates and their enhanced performance in loading and releasing plant extracts. In this work, pullulan/poly (vinyl alcohol) (P/PVA) hydrogels were first prepared using an eco-friendly method based on both a covalent and physical cross-linking approach. Then, the hydrogels were loaded with the hydroalcoholic extract of Calendula officinalis by a simple post-loading immersion method. Diff

The expression of an organism's genes determines its own characteristics in any given environment. In this study, we demonstrate that the phenotypic traits of genetically modified transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana plants, designed for nutrient efficiency and enhanced yield, can be naturally and readily transferred to neighboring wild-type plants. Our findings reveal that the transgenic plants significantly influence the populational, compositional, and functional traits of their root-associated microbiome (RAM), resulting in a larger population, with distinct composition and high functional pote

Aerobic denitrification (AD) can overcome the limitations of traditional denitrification in constructed wetlands (CWs) caused by heterogeneous dissolved oxygen distribution and carbon source scarcity, yet effectively enriching functional aerobic denitrifying microorganisms (ADMs) to enhance nitrogen removal efficiency remains a challenge. In this study, the microbial community structure and nitrogen removal pathway were regulated in small-scale CWs by root vertical spatial stress and different plants species. Reducing substrate depth from 60 cm to 10 cm significantly increased the average root

We have studied on allelopathy of plants and developed methods to identify the effective substances in root exudates, leaf leacheate, and volatile chemicals emitted from plants. We found traditional cover plants that show allelopathic activity are useful for weed control. It could eliminate the use of synthetic chemicals for this purpose. Allelopathy is a natural power of plants to protect themselves by producing natural organic chemicals. Some endemic plants in Asia, already known by farmers in the region, as either cover crops used in intercropping, hedgerow, or agroforestry, were found to p

We report an unusual case of orbital cellulitis in a cat. Drainage via the pterygopalatine fossa and medical treatment were performed. Failure of resolution and loss of ocular structure and visual function with a poor prognosis led to enucleation. During surgery, plant material and purulent exudate were present in the orbit. Histopathology showed an intraocular foreign body of grass that had migrated through the sclera causing a suprachoroidal abscess with choroidal and retinal detachment.

Snowpack variations in cold regions exert profound influences on the ecological functioning of constructed wetlands (CWs), particularly with respect to GHG emissions and nutrient removal. However, the underlying mechanisms have yet to be clarified. This study established pilot-scale vertical subsurface flow CWs in Northeast China, with Phragmites australis and Iris sibirica, and applied doubled snowpack (DS) and natural snow cover (CK) during winter. DS created highly moist, strongly reducing, and alkaline conditions during the dormant period, significantly inhibiting microbial aerobic respira

Low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) are essential O-containing metal-binding ligands involved in maintaining metal homeostasis, various metabolic processes, and plant responses to biotic and abiotic stress. Malate, citrate, and oxalate play a crucial role in metal detoxification and transport throughout the plant. This review provides a comparative analysis of the accumulation of LMWOAs in excluders, which store metals mainly in roots, and hyperaccumulators, which accumulate metals mainly in shoots. Modern concepts of the mechanisms of LMWOA secretion by the roots of excluders and hype
