Plant communication: More than one road to a plant's nose.

Plants perceive volatiles emitted by themselves or neighbours as danger signals. Although stomata were considered the main entrance, a new study implicates the leaf surface as an alternative, allowing plants to smell what is going on even with stomata closed.

Plant tolerance is explained by resource-based plant-nematode interactions.

Plant-parasitic nematodes are responsible for significant economic losses worldwide, affecting a wide range of crops. They infect and divert resources and impair plant growth. While resistance aims to limit parasite burden, tolerance is the ability of a plant to maintain its yield despite infection, which offers a complementary and potentially more sustainable strategy. Understanding how tolerance arises and operates requires mechanistic insights into host-parasite interactions and the constraints that shape them. In this study, we develop a mathematical model describing the coupled dynamics o

Something smells bad to plant pathogens: Production of hydrogen sulfide in plants and its role in plant defence responses.

BACKGROUND: Sulfur and diverse sulfur-containing compounds constitute important components of plant defences against a wide array of microbial pathogens. Among them, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) occupies a prominent position as a gaseous signalling molecule that plays multiple roles in regulation of plant growth, development and plant responses to stress conditions. Although the production of H2S in plant cells has been discovered several decades ago, the underlying pathways of H2S biosynthesis, metabolism and signalling were only recently uncovered. AIM OF THE REVIEW: Here we review the current kn

Plants as Enrichment? The Effect of Live Plants on the Behavior and Welfare of Indoor-Housed Titi Monkeys (Plecturocebus cupreus).

The biophilia hypothesis states that humans have an innate tendency to enjoy the presence of greenery due to vegetative-rich areas serving as adaptive environments during our evolutionary history. It is possible that other extant primate species may show a similar response to the presence of plants, but direct experimental interventions on indoor-housed primates, with plants isolated as a variable, represent a gap in the literature. In this study, 20 coppery titi monkeys (Plecturocebus cupreus) housed indoors were exposed to foliage outside of their home cages. Behavior following introduction

Detection of hepatitis E virus in greater Cairo. Two wastewater treatment plants and its prevalence among workers of these plants.

Because of inadequate public sanitation, epidemics of HEV infection have been reported in several developing countries. HEV-specific cDNA was prepared by reverse transcription of the total RNA extracted from water samples. Specified DNA amplification by POR demonstrates the presence of HEV in sewage samples from the inlets (PCR positive 10/36:27.77%), while outlet samples were PCR negative. HEV 1gM was detected in 40 workers out of 78 in these two studied plants (age 20-60 years), with a percentage of 51.25% and HAV 1gM was also detected in 3 workers out of 78 (3.84%). The study of serum ALT a

Plant Behaviour, Adaptive Plasticity and Evolution: Reassessing the Debate on Plant Intelligence.

In recent decades, plant sciences have profoundly transformed our philosophical understanding of plants, moving beyond the traditional view of the plant organism as a passive, mechanical entity devoid of agency. Contemporary research into plant physiology, chemical communication and adaptive strategies has helped to outline a theoretical framework: plants emerge as complex systems, capable of environmental perception, signal integration, physiological memory and flexible responses to stimuli. Recent findings have stimulated an extensive interdisciplinary debate on whether plants should be attr

Mind(the)Plant: An expandable multimodal facility for the integrated characterization of plant behaviour.

Understanding plant behaviour requires the integration of multiple phenotypic and physiological signals measured over time under controlled conditions. However, different plant signals are typically studied using separate experimental setups, limiting temporal alignment and integrative analyses. We present Mind(the)Plant, a modular experimental facility designed for the synchronized, long-term acquisition of multimodal plant data, including three-dimensional shoot kinematics, above- and below-ground volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and root imaging. Its modular architecture is designed to acco

Key plant traits for sustainable urban greening: A framework for plant selection.

In the future, we will have to deal with periods of drought, storms and severe climate change impacts. Insufficient green spaces worsens these challenges in urban landscapes. Rising urban populations and ecosystem degradation demand innovative solutions to enhance resilience of our cities. Some evidence suggests that urban plants offer a range of significant ecosystem services, such as mitigating heat islands, improving air quality by removing pollutants, storing carbon in their topsoil, and capturing rainwater. Although urban plants provide these essential ecosystem services, the selection of

Sampling of Plant Material to Study Endophytes in Small, Large, and Woody Plants.

The study of fungal, bacterial, and other endophytic microorganisms using high throughput DNA sequencing requires sampling and processing of plant material that eliminates phylloplane microorganisms and retains those inside the plant compartment. Leaves, stems, roots, and other plant tissues are removed from the plant, washed, surface sterilized, and stored for downstream applications. Especially in ecological studies, field work for sample collection may take place in remote locations where laboratory equipment and resources are rudimentary, and accessing samples from target plants can be cha

Suppression of Plant Defenses by Herbivorous Mites Is Not Associated with Adaptation to Host Plants.

Some herbivores suppress plant defenses, which may be viewed as a result of the coevolutionary arms race between plants and herbivores. However, this ability is usually studied in a one-herbivore-one-plant system, which hampers comparative studies that could corroborate this hypothesis. Here, we extend this paradigm and ask whether the herbivorous spider-mite Tetranychus evansi, which suppresses the jasmonic-acid pathway in tomato plants, is also able to suppress defenses in other host plants at different phylogenetic distances from tomatoes. We test this using different plants from the Solana

Analysing patent landscapes in plant biotechnology and new plant breeding techniques.

This article aims to inform the reader of the importance of searching patent landscapes in plant biotechnology and the use of basic tools to perform a patent search. The recommendations for a patent search strategy are illustrated with the specific example of zinc finger nuclease technology for genetic engineering in plants. Within this scope, we provide a general introduction to searching using two online and free-access patent databases esp@cenet and PatentScope. The essential features of the two databases, and their functionality is described, together with short descriptions to enable the

Soil availability, plant uptake and soil to plant transfer of 99Tc--a review.

The fission yield of 99Tc from 239Pu and 235U is similar to that of 137Cs or 90Sr and it is therefore an important component of nuclear weapons fall-out, nuclear waste and releases from nuclear facilities. There is particular current interest in 99Tc transfer from soil to plants for: (a) environmental impact assessments for terrestrial nuclear waste repositories, and (b) assessments of the potential for phytoextraction of radionuclides from contaminated effluent and soil. Vascular plants have a high 99Tc uptake capacity, a strong tendency to transport it to shoot material and accumulate it in

Creating the first synthetic plastid genome in plants.

Over the last decade, there has been a shift in biotechnology from genome reading (sequencing) to genome writing (engineering). While significant progress has been made in prokaryotes and yeast, genome writing remains in its infancy in plants. Unlike their complex nuclear genomes, the compact and biotechnologically attractive plastid genome represents an ideal target to launch plant genome writing at scale.

Regulatory plasticity of the 26S proteasome in plants.

The plant 26S proteasome is itself a regulatory target. Its abundance, composition, activity, and subcellular localisation are dynamically modulated by the very signalling pathways whose components or regulatory proteins it degrades. In this review, we draw on recent advances across immunity, abiotic stress, hormone signalling, organelle communication, and the proteasome's interplay with autophagy, together with the non-proteolytic functions of the 19S regulatory particle and apoplastic proteasomes, to establish the proteasome as a hub of regulatory plasticity. We argue that the proteasome ope

Measurement of Phloem-Based Electrical Signals in Plants.

Electrical signals are vital components of long-distance signaling in plants, enabling rapid systemic responses to environmental stimuli. These signals, which include action potentials (APs), variation potentials (VPs), and system potentials (SPs), that can also combine into electropotential waves (EPWs), are primarily propagated through the vascular system, with the phloem playing a central role. EPWs, encompassing APs, VPs, and SPs, are integral to systemic signaling and inter-organ communication via the phloem, and are closely associated with plant responses to pests and pathogens. The comp

Standardizing Methods for Shoot Metabolomics in Mycorrhizal Plants.

With the latest advances in analytical techniques based on liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS), knowledge of plant metabolomics has risen exponentially in recent years. The study of metabolomic changes associated with mycorrhizal symbiosis interacting with different environmental situations exemplifies the expansion of knowledge in this field. In the present chapter, we aim to provide a standard procedure for the analysis of shoot metabolites using liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry. The provided information includes an extraction bu

Mass spectrometry imaging in plants: Methods and applications.

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) has emerged as a powerful platform for spatial metabolomics, enabling direct mapping of metabolites within plant tissues. However, successful application of MSI in plants remains strongly dependent on effective sample preparation, as the unique structural features of plant tissues pose significant analytical challenges. In this review, we highlight recent advances in sample preparation strategies designed to address these limitations across diverse plant tissues. We then discuss how the methodological and technological innovations improve spatial resolution, sen

Learning in plants: A conceptual and experimental primer.

Whether plants are capable of associative learning remains a contested question, often complicated by conceptual ambiguity and methodological limitations. This article provides a critical and constructive primer on how to investigate associative learning in plants within a rigorous experimental framework. We begin by clarifying the concept of associative learning and distinguishing it from related phenomena such as habituation, sensitisation, and pseudo-conditioning. We then identify a set of minimal behavioural prerequisites that any system must satisfy to support associative processes. Evide
