Assessment of the hemodynamic effects of the IVC clipping by strain gauge plethysmography provides accurate quantitative data. Dysfunctional breathing (DB) is an underdiagnosed condition in young patients presenting with unexplained exertional breathlessness. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) provides valuable diagnostic insights in these challenging cases. A diagnostic approach to erectile impotence using a sexual function questionnaire, nocturnal penile plethysmography, penile blood pressure measurement, cavernosograms, cystometrograms and plasma testosterone levels is presented. Case examples demonstrate the clinical value of these diagnostic tools. Psychogenic impotence should be diagnosed only after nocturnal penile plethysmography has demonstrated the presence of complete erections.

Respiratory mode determination using the simultaneous nasal and oral respirometric technique (SNORT) or a head-out body plethysmography can be time-consuming, expensive, and intimidating to children. We have developed an improved method for assessing respiratory mode that uses inductive plethysmography linked to a menu-driven computer program that circumvents some of these problems. An assessment of 29 subjects over as many as nine separate time points suggests that respiratory mode measurements remain fairly uniform in some children, but can vary significantly in others.
