PAPR reduction with low-complexity pre-conditioned and orthogonal phase shaping in 400G coherent TFDM PON.

Coherent time- and frequency-division multiplexing (TFDM) passive optical network (PON) provides flexible resource allocation and low-latency access. However, the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) increases with the number of subcarriers, leading to reduced launch power and power budget. In this Letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a low-complexity PAPR reduction scheme for 400-Gb/s coherent TFDM PON. The proposed pre-conditioned and orthogonal phase shaping (POPS) scheme first applies Schroeder phase pre-conditioning to suppress subcarrier phase alignment and then selectively pe

Radiotherapy-Induced Stevens-Johnson Syndrome/ Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis in an Adolescent Girl With Diffuse Glioma of the Pons.

Radiotherapy is a rare cause of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)/ toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), especially in the pediatric age group. Most of the reported cases were concomitantly started on anti-epileptic drugs. Herein, we present a case of radiotherapy induced SJS/TEN in an adolescent girl in the absence of anti-epileptic drug use. Radiotherapy should be included as a potential cause for SJS/TEN, recognizing the important impact on management of the underlying malignancy.

Glutamate, Glutamine, GABA and Oxidative Products in the Pons Following Cortical Injury and Their Role in Motor Functional Recovery.

Brain injury leads to an excitatory phase followed by an inhibitory phase in the brain. The clinical sequelae caused by cerebral injury seem to be a response to remote functional inhibition of cerebral nuclei located far from the motor cortex but anatomically related to the injury site. It appears that such functional inhibition is mediated by an increase in lipid peroxidation (LP). To test this hypothesis, we report data from 80 rats that were allocated to the following groups: the sham group (n = 40), in which rats received an intracortical infusion of artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); t…

Decreased arylesterase activity of paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) might be a common denominator of neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL)-bound paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is mechanistically related to oxidative stress, inflammation and atherosclerosis and this multirole nature positions the enzyme as potential pathogenic player and candidate biomarker for many diseases. Our previous work suggests that decline in serum PON-1 activities, i.e. arylesterase and paraoxonase, might be associated with the occurrence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to late onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) or vascular dementia (VAD). The present study aimed to: (1) expand our previous findings in a larger and different popula

Nuclear parcellation of certain immunohistochemically identifiable neuronal systems in the midbrain and pons of the Highveld molerat (Cryptomys hottentotus).

The present paper details our findings following immunohistochemical examination of the midbrain and pons of the Highveld molerat (Cryptomys hottentotus) using antibodies for vesicular acetylcholine transporter (cholinergic neurons), tyrosine hydroxylase (dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurons), and serotonin (serotonergic neurons). The aim was to see if, in this microphthalmic rodent that lacks a distinct circadian rhythm, the nuclei involved in aspects of visual processing and the sleep-wake cycle exhibited specific loss or morphological alteration. For all of the neural systems investigated…

Gscl, a gene within the minimal DiGeorge critical region, is expressed in primordial germ cells and the developing pons.

Gscl, a paired-type homeobox gene, has been implicated in the pathology of DGS/VCFS by virtue of its genomic location and its structural similarity to the Gsc gene family. Immunohistochemical and in situ studies were performed to examine the expression pattern of this gene during embryonic development. A polyclonal antibody, generated to the full-length protein and shown to be specific for GSCL by both Western blotting and immunofluorescence, was used for immunohistochemical localization. Both in situ and antibody staining localized GSCL expression to a cluster of cells in the pons region of t…

Vascular contact with the fifth cranial nerve at the pons in patients with trigeminal neuralgia: detection with 3D FISP imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Vascular contact with the trigeminal nerve at the pons is known to cause trigeminal neuralgia; however, this finding also is present in some asymptomatic subjects. We evaluated the usefulness of high-resolution MR imaging and MR angiography of the posterior fossa to determine the presence or absence of vascular contact with the fifth cranial nerve at the pons in patients with trigeminal neuralgia and in control subjects. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The trigeminal nerves in 40 symptomatic patients and 114 asymptomatic control subjects were examined for the presence or absence of vascular …

Yeasts Associated with the Small-Intestinal Contents and Epithelium of Pon Yang Kham (Charolais Crossbred) Fattening Beef Cattle.

Yeast diversity in the pia and small-intestinal epithelium of Pon Yang Kham fattening cattle in Thailand was studied using a culture-dependent method. A total of 701 yeasts were isolated from the pia of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum of the small intestine, while 425 isolates were obtained from the epithelium of all three parts of the small intestine. Yeast identification was performed and ascomycetous yeasts were found at levels of 96.9% and 86.8% in the pia and small intestine, respectively, whereas basidiomycetous yeasts were found at levels of 2.3% and 12.7%. Candida parapsilosis was the

MRI diffusion and perfusion alterations in the mesencephalon and pons as markers of disease and symptom reversibility in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.

INTRODUCTION: Core symptomatology in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) points at dysfunction in the mesencephalon and pons indicating pathological changes in these regions, but only a few studies have addressed the issue. The aim of this study was to investigate diffusion (ADC) and perfusion patterns pre- and postoperatively in these areas in iNPH. METHODS: Twenty iNPH patients and 15 healthy controls were included. Patients underwent a clinical examination and brain MRI pre- and 3-6 months postoperatively. The MRI-scan included diffusion and dynamic susceptibility contrast perf…

Changes in orexinergic immunoreactivity of the piglet hypothalamus and pons after exposure to chronic postnatal nicotine and intermittent hypercapnic hypoxia.

We recently showed that orexin expression in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) infants was reduced by 21% in the hypothalamus and by 40-50% in the pons as compared with controls. Orexin maintains wakefulness/sleeping states, arousal, and rapid eye movement sleep, abnormalities of which have been reported in SIDS. This study examined the effects of two prominent risk factors for SIDS, intermittent hypercapnic hypoxia (IHH) (prone-sleeping) and chronic nicotine exposure (cigarette-smoking), on orexin A (OxA) and orexin B (OxB) expression in piglets. Piglets were randomly assigned to five group…

MRI measurements of the pons and cerebellum in children born preterm; associations with the severity of periventricular leukomalacia and perinatal risk factors.

Our purpose was to measure the size of the pons and cerebellum in preterm babies with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), and to study their relationship with the severity of PVL and with perinatal risk factors. We examined 33 premature children, mean gestational age 31 weeks, range 26-36 weeks with PVL on MRI, and 27 full-term controls. On MRI at 0.4-5.5 years (mean 1.4 years) we measured the area of the corpus callosum and vermis, the anteroposterior diameter of the pons and the volume of the cerebellum. The area of the corpus callosum was used as a marker of white matter loss and PVL severi…

Vertical pons hyperintensity and hot cross bun sign in cerebellar-type multiple system atrophy and spinocerebellar ataxia type 3.

BACKGROUND: The "hot cross bun" (HCB) sign, a cruciform hyperintensity in the pons on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), has gradually been identified as a typical finding in multiple system atrophy, cerebellar-type (MSA-C). Few reports have evaluated the sensitivity of an HCB, including a cruciform hyperintensity and vertical line in the pons, which precedes a cruciform hyperintensity, in the early stages of MSA-C. Moreover, the difference in frequency and timing of appearance of an HCB between MSA-C and spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) has not been fully investigated. METHODS: This study…

The Paraoxonase (PON) Gene Family in Health, Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) and Other Diseases.

The Paraoxonase (PON) gene family consists of three paralogues (PON1, PON2 and PON3) that are tandemly located on chromosome 7. In this review paper, the structure and function of the encoded proteins is summarized. In addition, an overview is given on the generated animal models. Finally, their involvement in the pathogenesis of different diseases is discussed, starting from an extended screening of the literature using PUBMED and Web of Science. PON1 and PON3 are mainly expressed in the liver and released into the bloodstream, bound to high-density lipoprotein. PON2 is expressed in various t
