Prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver in the general Dutch population and in groups at increased risk.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is defined as a liver fat content ≥5.56%. It is of clinical interest to know the prevalence of NAFLD in people with a combination of metabolic risk factors. We aimed to examine the prevalence of NAFLD, including groups with metabolic risk factors. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this cross-sectional analysis of the Netherlands Epidemiology of Obesity (NEO) study, liver fat content was assessed using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS). Participants with excessive alcohol consumption or missing values were excluded, leaving a tot

Antagonistic effects of Plasmodium-helminth co-infections on malaria pathology in different population groups in Côte d'Ivoire.

INTRODUCTION: Plasmodium spp. and helminths are co-endemic in many parts of the tropics; hence, co-infection is a common phenomenon. Interactions between Plasmodium and helminth infections may alter the host's immune response and susceptibility and thus impact on morbidity. There is little information on the direction and magnitude of such interactions and results are conflicting. This study aimed at shedding new light on the potential interactions of Plasmodium and helminth co-infections on anemia and splenomegaly in different population groups in Côte d'Ivoire. METHODOLOGY: Parasitologic an…

Epidemiology of Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Bangladesh: Prevalence among General Population, Risk Groups and Genotype Distribution.

Despite a considerable body of published research on hepatitis B in Bangladesh, researchers continue to lament the lack of reliable information about hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection epidemiology. The present review aims to provide a comprehensive survey of the literature with particular focus on a number of epidemiological questions, as well as a commentary on the trends of hepatitis B research as it has taken place in Bangladesh. The key themes to emerge from this review are: first, beyond noting a declining trend, it is difficult to provide conclusive estimates about HBV prevalence in the

Association between Ambient Air Pollution and Asthma Prevalence in Different Population Groups Residing in Eastern Texas, USA.

Air pollution has been an on-going research focus due to its detrimental impact on human health. However, its specific effects on asthma prevalence in different age groups, genders and races are not well understood. Thus, the present study was designed to examine the association between selected air pollutants and asthma prevalence in different population groups during 2010 in the eastern part of Texas, USA.The pollutants considered were particulate matter (PM2.5 with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 micrometers) and surface ozone. The population groups were categorized based on age, gend…

Exposure to mercury in susceptible population groups living in the former mercury mining town of Idrija, Slovenia.

500 years of mercury (Hg) mining in the town of Idrija has caused severe pollution in Idrija and its surroundings. Following the closure of the mine in 1995, the environment remains contaminated with Hg. Sources of elemental-, inorganic- and methyl Hg exposure were identified, potential environmental level of exposure to Hg was evaluated and actual internal exposure to Hg was assessed in selected susceptible population groups comprising school-age children and pregnant women living in Idrija and in control groups from rural and urban environments. The study of pregnant women (n=31) was conduct…

[Specific distribution patterns and manifestations of respiratory chlamydiosis of the upper respiratory tract in different population groups].

The objective of this study was to elucidate specific distribution patterns and manifestations of respiratory chlamydiosis affecting the upper respiratory tract in different groups of the patients (both children and adults) presenting with otorhinolaryngological problems. Chlamydia were detected with the use of a combination of laboratory methods including PCR, direct immunofluorescent and imunoenzymatic assays. The study included 1329 patients. The data obtained suggest the high prevalence of chlamydial infection of the upper respiratory tract in different groups of the population. The specie

Sigmoid colon morphology in the population groups of Durban, South Africa, with special reference to sigmoid volvulus.

Sigmoid volvulus demonstrates geographical, racial, and gender variation. This autopsy study was undertaken to establish morphological diffe … no difference in sigmoid colon length, mesocolon height, and width between males and females in all population groups. Among Africans, the long-narrow type was more common in males, and the classic and long-broad types were more common in females. Splaying of teniae coli and thickening of the mesentery were more common in Africans. Tethering of the sigmoid colon to …

Using the PAI with an eating disordered population: scale characteristics, factor structure, and differences among diagnostic groups.

Psychometric properties of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI; Morey 1991) within an eating disordered sample seeking treatment (N = 238) and differences among eating disorder diagnostic groups on the PAI were examined. The PAI showed acceptable alpha coefficients, item-total correlations, and interitem correlations. The factor structure was similar to that reported by Morey (1991), with the addition of another factor related to interpersonal coolness and distance. Those with binge eating disorder (BED) reported fewer problems and less distress in general compared to other eating disord

Mode of hepatitis C virus infection, epidemiology, and chronicity rate in the general population and risk groups.

Since the discovery of the hepatitis C virus (HCV), it has become evident that this infectious agent is a primary cause of posttransfusion and sporadic non-A, non-B hepatitis. Identification and introduction of surrogate markers for posttransfusion hepatitis and later introduction of anti-HCV screening has decreased the incidence of posttransfusion hepatitis. Community-acquired HCV infection is less common than posttransfusion HCV hepatitis. HCV infection may lead to liver cirrhosis without prior evidence of laboratory or histologic infection. Populations at risk for HCV infection include pati

Q fever in the Netherlands: a sero-epidemiological survey among human population groups from 1968 to 1983.

A sero-epidemiological survey, using an indirect immunofluorescence test for IgG against Coxiella burnetii (phase II), was carried out in the Netherlands. Serum samples taken in 1968, 1975, 1979 and 1983 were tested. Occupational groups with a supposedly high risk of infection (veterinarians, residents of dairy farms and taxidermists) showed a significantly higher percentage of seropositives than defined controls. The percentage of seropositive amateur wool spinners was significantly higher than that of the controls from the same region. Since 1968 there has been no increase in the percentage

The incidence of Perthes' disease in three population groups in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa.

Perthes' disease is thought to be rare in black children but no figures of incidence have previously been available. A search was therefore made for cases of the disease occurring in the Eastern Cape during the five-year period 1975 to 1979. Of 55 cases found, 38 were in white children, 11 in children of mixed ancestry ("coloured" children) and six in black children. The annual incidence in white children aged 14 years and under was 10.8 per 100 000, in coloured children 1.7 per 100 000, and in black children 0.45 per 100 000. In all races the incidence in the metropolitan area of Port Elizabe

High Seroprevalence Against Typhus Group and Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae in Rural Indigenous Populations of Peninsular Malaysia.

Rickettsioses of the typhus group (TG) and spotted fever group (SFG) are emerging bacterial infections worldwide, especially in the tropics. Only a few studies on these pathogens and their respective clinical diseases have been conducted in Malaysia. Here, we performed a seroprevalence study among 544 healthy, afebrile indigenous people (Orang Asli) from peninsular Malaysia for TG and SFG rickettsioses in nine rural and peri-urban settlements. The study population encompassed children, adolescents, and adults. The overall seroprevalence of rickettsiosis in the Orang Asli was 48.5%, with 27.9%

SARS-CoV-2 antibody seroprevalence in the general population and high-risk occupational groups across 18 cities in Iran: a population-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid increases in cases of COVID-19 were observed in multiple cities in Iran towards the start of the pandemic. However, the true infection rate remains unknown. We aimed to assess the seroprevalence of antibodies against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in 18 cities of Iran as an indicator of the infection rate. METHODS: In this population-based cross-sectional study, we randomly selected and invited study participants from the general population (from lists of people registered with the Iranian electronic health record system or health-care centres)
