Association between polymorphisms in transforming growth factor-β1 and sporadic Alzheimer's disease in a Chinese population.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder of the brain. It causes the slow progressive loss of cognitive functions that ultimately leads to dementia and death in the elderly. The etiology and mechanism of late-onset AD (LOAD) are poorly understood, and genetic factors might play an important role in the development of AD. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between common polymorphisms in TGF-β1 with LOAD in a Chinese Han population. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms in TGF-β1 (rs1800469 and rs1982073) were genotyped in 202 patients with spor

Breast-feeding duration and growth of fully breast-fed infants in a poor urban Chilean population.

The duration of breast-feeding and the growth of fully breast-fed infants during the first year of life were analyzed according to sex, birth weight, characteristics of the mother, and breast-feeding pattern. All infants (n = 1217) were healthy and fully breast-fed at 30 d postpartum and 63% and 24% were still fully breast-fed at 6 and 12 mo, respectively. The median ages at introduction of nondairy food and of milk supplements were 6.0 and 7.4 mo, respectively. The probability of remaining fully breast-fed for 12 mo was significantly higher in infants with higher birth weight and higher mater

Effects of light environment and population density on growth performance of male turkeys: 2. Physiological changes.

This study was designed to determine the effects of intermittent white light [2 h of light (L) followed by 2 h of dark (D) repeated six times per day] vs. diurnal white, blue, and red light (12L:12D), light intensities of 86.1 lx (high) vs. 5.4 lx (low) at high and low population densities, and season of the year on changes in the pineal, pituitary, and adrenal glands and testes of male turkeys. Pineal gland weights were unaffected by any of the factors under study. Pituitary gland weights significantly increased only in 12-wk-old males reared during the fall and winter compared with those rea

Post-Traumatic Growth in a Canadian Perinatal Population During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Examination.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic growth (PTG) has been examined in the context of COVID-19-related stress; however, there has been less consideration for PTG in more vulnerable groups, such as pregnant and postpartum women. This study aimed to qualitatively explore PTG (through silver lining experiences) in a perinatal population and to understand how these experiences evolved over the course of the pandemic. METHODS: Data came from COVID-19 Survey Canada, which was administered online at three time points across 12-months: May 2020, November 2020, and May 2021 (N = 1074). At baseline, 61 perinat

More twins expected in low-income countries with later maternal ages at birth and population growth.

STUDY QUESTION: How are the changing maternal age structure and population growth expected to shape future twinning rates in low-income countries? SUMMARY ANSWER: With maternal age at birth projected to shift toward older ages, twinning rates are also estimated to increase in most low-income countries by 2050 and even more by 2100. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Many of the sub-Saharan African and South Asian countries are undergoing, and projected to further experience, the shift of maternal age at birth to older ages. Advanced maternal age is a well-established predictor of multiple births at the …

Gestational weight trajectory and early offspring growth differed by gestational diabetes: a population-based cohort study.

AIMS: To investigate the association of gestational weight gain (GWG) trajectory with early children growth, and explore whether this association varies by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) status. METHODS: Maternal weight and offspring anthropometric outcomes before 36 months were extracted from Electronic Medical Record of Zhoushan, China. GWG trajectory was modeled using latent-class trajectory analysis. Multiple generalized estimating equations models were applied to analyze associations of GWG trajectory categories with early children growth. RESULTS: Three GWG trajectory classes were

Maternal Diabetes, Fetal Growth, and Stillbirth Risk: A Population-Wide Retrospective Cohort Study From Victoria, Australia.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationships between diabetes in pregnancy, birth weight, and stillbirth risk, using population-based data. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: All singleton births in Victoria, Australia, between 2009 and 2020 were linked with perinatal and diabetes data. For each diabetes subgroup (type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes [diet-controlled, insulin-controlled]), we assessed the proportion of infants with a birth weight in <10th or >97th centile, the probability of stillbirth by birth weight centile, and stillbirth rate per 1,000 pregnancies across gestational age. Placental plastics in young women from general population correlate with reduced foetal growth in IUGR pregnancies.

Constant exposure to plastics particulates has raised concerns against human health, particularly when it comes to birth outcomes. The present study explores the first appraisal of plastic particles in fresh human placenta and its association with foetal growth in neonates. Specifically, 43 pregnant women from general population were selected and their placentas were analyzed by digital microscopy and Raman microspectroscopy for microplastics (MPs <5 mm). We used regression analysis to estimate associations between MPs count in placenta and neonatal anthropometric measurements. MPs were found

Unisex vs sex-specific estimated fetal weight charts for fetal growth monitoring: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: In contrast with birthweight or other growth charts, a feature of most intrauterine charts is that they are not differentiated by sex. Differences in weight by sex during pregnancy are considered to be relatively minor; however, small systematic differences may affect the sensitivity and specificity of screening for fetuses with growth restriction. OBJECTIVE: To assess differences between unisex and sex-specific estimated fetal weight charts at the third-trimester ultrasound with regard to the sex ratio of fetuses detected with an estimated fetal weight <10th percentile and subseq

Post-traumatic growth and its predictors among Syrian refugees in Istanbul: A mental health population survey.

AIMS: The negative mental health effects of exposure to trauma are well-documented. However, some individuals are theorized to undergo post-traumatic growth (PTG) after exposure to trauma, potentially experiencing positive psychological change across five domains: appreciation for life, relationships with others, new possibilities in life, personal strength, and spiritual change. PTG is less studied in forcibly displaced populations in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to explore levels of PTG and associated factors among Syrian refugee adults living in Istanbul, Turkey. METH

Growth Charts for Height, Weight, and BMI (6-18 y) for the Tuscany Youth Sports Population.

Overweight during youth is a large-scale public health issue. Engaging in regular physical activity generally reduces weight status. The hypothesis of the study is that organized sport plays an active role in maintaining a correct body weight during youth. The purpose of this study is to trace growth charts by height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) to be applied to the youth sports population. A retrospective study was conducted on 14,700 young athletes (10,469 males and 4231 females) aged between 6 and 18 years from surveillance carried out during the pre-participation screening of sports

Positive density-dependent growth supports costs sharing hypothesis and population density sensing in a manipulative parasite.

Parasites manipulate their hosts' phenotype to increase their own fitness. Like any evolutionary adaptation, parasitic manipulations should be costly. Though it is difficult to measure costs of the manipulation directly, they can be evaluated using an indirect approach. For instance, theory suggests that as the parasite infrapopulation grows, the investment of individual parasites in host manipulation decreases, because of cost sharing. Another assumption is that in environments where manipulation does not pay off for the parasite, it can decrease its investment in the manipulation to save res

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGFA) gene variation in polycystic ovary syndrome in a Tunisian women population.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by the growth of a number of small cysts on the ovaries which leads to sex hormonal imbalance. Women who are affected by this syndrome suffer from irregular menstrual cycles, decline in their fertility, excessive hair growth, obesity, acne and most importantly cardiac function problems. The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a pivotal role in tissue vascularization in general and in the pathogenesis of many diseases. The PCOS was found to be associated with high expression levels of VEGF. In women who undergo assisted r
