Epidemiological analysis of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Saskatoon Health Region.

BACKGROUND: The incidence rates of Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) in Saskatoon Health Region are approximately double the national average. A descriptive study was designed to try to determine why. METHODS: The objectives of the study were: (1) to determine whether or not the introduction of a new detection method that is less invasive and more sensitive led to more tests being ordered and a higher percentage of positive cases; (2) to determine what percentage of physicians and STI clinic nurses notified Public Health within 72 hours of suspected Ct or GC; (3) to de

Design of the integrative medical group visits randomized control trial for underserved patients with chronic pain and depression.

BACKGROUND: Given the public health crisis of opioid overprescribing for pain, there is a need for evidence-based non pharmacological treatment options that effectively reduce pain and depression. We aim to examine the effectiveness of the Integrative Medical Group Visits (IMGV) model in reducing chronic pain and depressive symptoms, as well as increasing pain self-management. METHODS: This paper details the study design and implementation of an ongoing randomized controlled trial of the IMGV model as compared to primary care visits. The research aims to determine if the IMGV model is effecti

A randomized longitudinal factorial design to assess malaria vector control and disease management interventions in rural Tanzania.

The optimization of malaria control strategies is complicated by constraints posed by local health systems, infrastructure, limited resources, and the complex interactions between infection, disease, and treatment. The purpose of this paper is to describe the protocol of a randomized factorial study designed to address this research gap. This project will evaluate two malaria control interventions in Mvomero District, Tanzania: (1) a disease management strategy involving early detection and treatment by community health workers using rapid diagnostic technology; and (2) vector control through

[Consolidation of international guidelines for the management of canine populations in urban areas and proposal of performance indicators].

The objective of this study is to propose a generic program for the management of urban canine populations with suggestion of performance indicators. The following international guidelines on canine population management were revised and consolidated: World Health Organization, World Organisation for Animal Health, World Society for the Protection of Animals, International Companion Animal Management Coalition, and the Food and Agriculture Organization. Management programs should cover: situation diagnosis, including estimates of population size; social participation with involvement of variou

Evaluation of a capacity building intervention on malaria treatment for under-fives in rural health facilities in Niger State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Despite the uptake of parasitological testing into policy and practice, appropriate prescription of anti-malarials and artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) in accordance with test results is variable. This study describes a National Malaria Control Programme-led capacity building intervention which was implemented in 10 States of Nigeria. Using the experience of Niger State, this study assessed the effect on malaria diagnosis and prescription practices among febrile under-fives in rural health facilities. METHODS: The multicomponent capacity building intervention consisted

Monitoring tuberculosis programs - National Tuberculosis Indicator Project, United States, 2002-2008.

The National Tuberculosis Indicators Project (NTIP) is a secure, web-based monitoring system that uses routinely collected surveillance data on individual tuberculosis (TB) cases to measure the performance of state and local TB control programs, help programs to prioritize improvement efforts and focus on key TB control activities, and track progress toward national program objectives. Data are reported on a yearly basis and with frequent updates. This report summarizes NTIP results from the most recent 5 years for which data are available. Program performance was mixed, with general improveme

Communicable-disease surveillance in New Jersey.

The DHSS and federal agencies have expanded their surveillance efforts to improve existing methods of reporting notifiable communicable diseases and to include additional data sources that might provide a more comprehensive view of disease activity in New Jersey. Currently, the DHSS is evaluating these efforts and recognizes several issues that need to be addressed, including: assessment of the timeliness, completeness, and accuracy of surveillance data; validation of surveillance data through comparison with hospital uniform billing data; characterization of the sensitivity of alerts through

Assessment of reportable disease incidence after Hurricane Sandy, New York City, 2012.

OBJECTIVE: Hurricane Sandy's October 29, 2012 arrival in New York City caused flooding, power disruption, and population displacement. Infectious disease risk may have been affected by floodwater exposure, residence in emergency shelters, overcrowding, and lack of refrigeration or heating. For 42 reportable diseases that could have been affected by hurricane-related exposures, we developed methods to assess whether hurricane-affected areas had higher disease incidence than other areas of NYC. METHODS: We identified post-hurricane cases as confirmed, probable, or suspected cases with onset or

Rural mental health strengths and social connectedness: Findings from the Australian National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe rural data from the Australian National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing survey (2020-2022) to assess strengths-based questions, differences by rurality, and factors associated with excellent social connectedness. METHODS: Survey questions were mapped to the Rural Strengths Socioecological Framework. Descriptive and logistic analyses assessed rural adults' use of strengths by remoteness and presence of affective/anxiety disorders in the past 12 months. Logistic regression explored factors associated with social connectedness. RESULTS: Survey questi

A demonstration of mobile phone deployment to support the treatment of acutely ill children under five in Bushenyi district, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Benefits of mobile phone deployment for children <5 in low-resource settings remain unproven. The target population of the current demonstration study in Bushenyi District, Uganda, presented with acute fever, pneumonia, or diarrhoea and were treated by community health workers (CHWs) providing integrated community case management (iCCM). METHODS: An observational study was conducted in five parishes (47 villages) served by CHWs well versed in iCCM with supplemental training in mobile phone use. Impact was assessed by quantitative measures and qualitative evaluation through househo

A cross-sectional study of point-of-care lactate testing in integrated community care management (ICCM) for children with acute respiratory illness in rural uganda.

BACKGROUND: Integrated community case management (iCCM) programs leverage lay village health workers (VHWs) to carry out the initial evaluation of children with common conditions including malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea. Therefore, it is imperative that VHWs are able to identify children who are critically ill and require referral to a health facility. Elevated venous lactate levels have been associated with severe illness and adverse health outcomes, including death. However, lactic acidosis may not be recognized in rural settings because it is not routinely measured outside of hospitals and

The impact of supply reduction through alcohol management plans on serious injury in remote indigenous communities in remote Australia: a ten-year analysis using data from the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

AIMS: To assess the impact of supply reduction through Alcohol Management Plans (AMP) on the rate of serious injuries in four indigenous communities in remote Australia. METHODS: An ecological study used the database of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) to calculate trauma retrieval rates for 8 years pre- and 2 years post-AMP in four remote communities covering a period from 1 January 1995 to 24 November 2005. All serious injuries in these communities required aero-medical retrieval. Results Serious injury resulted in a total of 798 retrievals during the observation period. One-sided ana
