Evidence is provided that mutagenicity in Salmonella by a chromium(VI) salt and a chromium(III) compound has a differential dependence on the presence of oxygen. The mutagenic chromium(III) compound, cis-dichlorobis(2,2'-bipyridyl)chromium(III), reverted Salmonella strains, TA102 and TA2638, only under aerobic conditions. Animal experiments were started in 1988 with the aim of inducing malignant lymphomas. 52 guinea pigs were exposed to potassium dichromate using the TINA test (plus 39 control animals). Following the sensitization procedure, the test animals and 15 control guinea pigs were exposed daily (5 x a week) epicutaneously to the antigen up to the present time. A comparison has been made of the 'flare-up' of 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) contact reactions with that of 'flare-up' of potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) contact sensitivity reactions following the intravenous injection of dinitrobenzenesulphonic acid (DNBSO3) or K2Cr2O7. The results of patch testing over the past 18 months in a general dermatology clinic are presented and compared with the data recently reported by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group. Good correlation exists between the results of the two studies for all the reported allergens except nickel sulfate and potassium dichromate. Fifteen biopsies from contact allergic reactions in sensitized patients were taken at different time intervals after application of simple chemicals. Two different procedures for electron microscopy were done. No signs of damage were ever seen in Langerhans cells. The authors are therefore of the opinion that there is still no proof for a target role of Langerhans cells in contact allergic reactions in humans.

Collection bacterial strains were found to be capable of chromium (VI) reduction although they had not been in contact with chromium compounds before. Strains capable of nitrate respiration could use bichromate ions as a terminal electron acceptor in the absence of competing acceptors. Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) when bichromate was added to the cultural broth whose redox potential reached -140 mV.

The objective of our study was to determine the prevalence of contact hypersensitivity in asymptomatic Czech schoolchildren. We recruited 236 Prague asymptomatic schoolchildren for epicutaneous tests. The children were tested with European baseline series (25 allergens). A total of 218 children (114 boys and 104 girls) completed the study. Of these, 67 (30.7%) children had one or more positive reactions to tested allergens.
