The efficiency of a composite oral treatment on 131I thyroid uptake was investigated in three adult volunteers. The treatment consisted of 10 g of calcium alginate, 3 g ferrihexacyanoferrate(II), 130 mg of potassium iodide and 5 g of Zn-DTPA. This mixture when administered 30 min before 131I almost completely blocked the 131I thyroid uptake. This indicates that simultaneous administration of other antidotal agents do not cancel or decrease the effect of potassium iodide on 131I thyroid uptake. AIM: To assess efficacy of different methods of iodine prophylaxis in pregnant women living in conditions of goiter endemia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Standard clinical, laboratory and device tests for iodine deficiency according to WHO criteria were made in 156 pregnant women living in the territory affected by goiter endemia. Of them, 121 examinees had no thyroid pathology, 35 ones had diffuse euthyroid goiter. All of them received different kinds of iodine prophylaxis.

Three patients with vegetating iododerma as a result of potassium iodide therapy are presented. The first patient had polyarteritis nodosa, the second had monoclonal gammopathy of undertermined significance, and the third had multiple myeloma. Vegetating iododerma probably represents an idiosyncratic response to iodides; patients with polyarteritis nodosa and paraproteinemias may be predisposed.

Sporotrichosis is a chronic subacute infection caused by fungi belonging to the Sporothrix Complex. In the present clinical case, nasal sporotrichosis was treated with potassium iodide. This was unsuccessful, and the treatment was restarted with a combination of potassium iodide and itraconazole. This however resulted in a further recurrence of the infection. Potassium iodide, itraconazole (ITCZ), and terbinafine are widely known as oral antifungal agents for the treatment of sporotrichosis. Although potassium iodide has been used as the antifungal agent of first choice in Japan due to its high efficacy, its use is not covered by the health insurance programs. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of pharmacological quantities of iodide (SSKI) on thyroid function in euthyroid patients previously treated with recombinant interferon-alpha (rIFN-alpha) for chronic viral hepatitis B and C (HCV), a cytokine which may induce thyroid dysfunction.

Rhinoentomophthoromycosis in an immunocompetent Indian male due to Basidiobolus species resulting in a huge (elephantine) nasal deformity, is reported. The diagnosis was done by demonstration of hyphae in direct tissue smear examination in potassium hydroxide, histopathological examination and by cultural characteristics. We report a case of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis in a 69-year old man who had nodular-ulcerated lesions on the right hand and forearm. Small nodules remained on the right hand after 8 weeks of 0.5 g daily treatment with potassium iodide. Alternatively, terbinafine therapy (125 mg/day) resulted in healing with atrophic scars after 9 weeks without side effects. We reviewed 67 patients of cutaneous sporotrichosis in Japan from 1993 to 1999.
