'Staying strong': A constructivist grounded theory of how registered nurses deal with the impact of trauma-related events in rural acute care practice.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study explored how Registered Nurses (RNs) in rural practice deal with psychologically traumatic events when living and working in the same rural community over time. BACKGROUND: Rural RNs who are exposed to trauma may be at high risk for psychological distress (e.g. secondary traumatic stress, vicarious trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder), in the context of isolated practice and slower emergency response times. DESIGN AND METHODS: Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory methodology was chosen for this qualitative study. Purposeful sampling was used to recru

Interpersonal counselling in general practice.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal counselling (IPC) derives from interpersonal psycho-therapy (IPT) but is briefer in the number and duration of sessions and is particularly suited to the primary care setting. While depression and other psychological symptoms are not necessarily 'caused' by interpersonal problems, they do occur in a social and interpersonal context. Problem areas commonly associated with the onset of depression are unresolved grief, interpersonal disputes, role transition and interpersonal deficits such as social isolation. OBJECTIVE: This article discusses IPC and how it can be used

Psychological outcomes of debriefing healthcare providers who experience expected and unexpected patient death in clinical or simulation experiences: A scoping review.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To synthesise and map the literature on the psychological outcomes reported following debriefing of healthcare providers who experience expected and unexpected patient death in either clinical practice or simulation setting. BACKGROUND: Patient death occurs in both the clinical and simulation environments and can result in psychological stress in healthcare providers and students. While debriefing following patient death has demonstrated the ability to promote positive psychological outcomes, addressing the psychological or emotional stress of the event is inconsistently

Prevalence and determinants of violent disciplinary practices for children in Bangladesh: Evidence from a nationally representative survey.

Violent discipline, characterized by the use of physical force resulting in bodily pain, discomfort, or resorting to scolding and emotional abuse to correct children's misbehavior, has gathered considerable attention due to its negative impact on children's development. This study aims to identify the prevalence and factors associated with different violent disciplinary practices toward children of 1-14 years age in Bangladesh. Utilizing data from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) conducted in 2019, this analysis, based on interviews with parents of 70027 children, focuses on three

Psychological growth and well-being in individuals born with cleft: An application of self-determination theory.

OBJECTIVE: Many studies of individuals born with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) address the psychological impact of CLP in terms of stigma and/or 'resilience'. The present study challenges the usefulness of resilience in CLP research with the application of self-determination theory (SDT). It is proposed that SDT can serve to better understand how individuals born with CLP can achieve psychological growth and well-being. DESIGN: Interviews were conducted with 15 individuals born with CLP in the UK. RESULTS: A thematic analysis was conducted and four main themes emerged: (1) personal challenge

Racism in the science and practice of psychotherapy.

We discuss a recent controversy that occurred in The Cognitive Behavioural Therapist over whether Lilienfeld's critical views on microaggressions theory and research reflect racist beliefs, as alleged by some. This is one of many recent examples of a profoundly antiscientific practice whereby racism allegations chill scientific debate and open inquiry on important research issues. This produces an overtly politicized science that has a corrosive effect on scientific progress and ultimately the useful application of research in clinical practice. The microaggressions controversy provides an esp

The effect of motor solution exploration on the transferability of an acquired motor skill.

Movement variability can either facilitate or impede motor learning, dependent on the context of the learning environment. Most previous studies have evaluated reward- or reinforcement-based learning paradigms with a clear task goal and/or extrinsic feedback. We assessed the effect of movement variability when learning the kettlebell swing in a learner-regulated context, where participants relied solely on intrinsic feedback. We aimed to determine if high variability when first practicing the kettlebell swing enabled exploration of motor solutions that could be utilized to perform the movement

Validation of the subtle and overt psychological abuse scale: an examination of construct validity.

The Subtle and Overt Scale of Psychological Abuse (Marshall, 1999a) is a measure designed to examine previously unevaluated forms of psychological abuse. The scale was originally divided into seven subscales (overt: dominance, indifference, monitoring and discrediting; subtle: undermining, discounting, isolating). A sample of 172 women was used to evaluate the construct validity of this measure. In other words, the internal structure of the measure, its relation to other measures of physical and psychological abuse, and its relationship to other psychological outcomes. Empirical and theoretica

Behaviour change, the itchy spot of healthcare quality improvement: How can psychology theory and skills help to scratch the itch?

Despite the clear utility and transferability, National Health Service (NHS) quality improvement initiatives have yet to benefit fully from what is already known within health psychology. Thus far, evidence from established, seminal behaviour change theory and practice have been ignored in favour of newly developed models and frameworks. Further, whilst there is a growing interest in what is commonly referred to as 'human factors' of change and improvement, there is scant transferability of known psychologically informed implementation skills into routine NHS Improvement practice. The science

Nurses' work environment and health promotion in relation to psychological distress symptoms, and sleep disturbance: A structural equation modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: The healthcare work environment has numerous stressors that can contribute to distress and poor health outcomes among nurses. The impact of distress can be detrimental, resulting in nurses leaving the profession. Thus, it is critical to explore factors in the work environment that contribute to the distress symptoms and behaviors that promote nurses' health. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the constructs associated with the conceptual model of distress, such as the work environment, specifically workload and the practice environment (quality of care, salary, staffing, time,

How Rapid Cycle Deliberate Practice Compares to Traditional Simulation: A Qualitative Investigation of Pediatric Resident Perceptions.

OBJECTIVES: Rapid cycle deliberate practice (RCDP) is a type of within-simulation debriefing that alternates between specific practice and targeted feedback. While RCDP has become increasingly used in conjunction with traditional debriefing, little is known about specific contexts in which RCDP might be most useful. Therefore, our objective was to explore learners' perceptions of RCDP versus traditional simulation, with focus on differences in learning and psychological safety. METHODS: Pediatric residents at a large pediatric residency program attended simulation trainings with both RCDP and

Contemplative Practices as a Form of Stress Management for Patients with Kidney Disease.

Increased rates of adverse health conditions across the spectrum of cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic disease have been linked to social, psychologic, and environmental stressors. Stress from daily living can elicit protective responses from multiple physiologic systems that include psychologic/neurocognitive and biologic/cellular pathways. Excessive exposures to noxious stress overwhelms normally protective responses and lead to maladaptive psychologic and biologic consequences that trigger and/or exacerbate multiple disease processes including CKD and CKD risk factors. Stress management

Psychological approaches in understanding and treating voice disorders: a primer for compassion focused therapy (CFT).

There is increasing evidence for the usefulness of psychological concepts in voice practice and voice therapy. Existing psychological conceptualisations of voice disorders feature principles from cognitive-behavioural therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and personality psychology, to formulate how voice problems might develop and/or become persistent. Voice practitioners are encouraged to apply these principles when working with people with voice disorders to aid rehabilitation and improve psychosocial wellbeing as it relates to voice use. To this end, this tutorial offers a primer for compa

Physical Activity, Seasonal Sensitivity and Psychological Well-Being of People of Different Age Groups Living in Extreme Environments.

Physical activity can prevent many organic and mental pathologies. For people living in extreme southern high-latitude environments, weather conditions can affect these activities, altering their psychological well-being and favoring the prevalence of seasonal sensitivity (SS). This study aims to determine the relationships between the practice of physical activity, seasonal sensitivity and well-being in people living in high southern latitudes. A cross-sectional study was conducted, using the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ), applying a psychological well-being scale, and dete
