Aspergillus fumigatus precipitins in dog sera were detected by counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE). The procedure gave results within 90 minutes compared with 72 to 96 hours required in agar-gel double diffusion. Culture-filtrate antigens from two-week-old cultures of A fumigatus and two-day-old mycelial antigens produced the strongest reactions in CIE tests and the former antigen also revealed high titres in tests with serum from seven of 14 dogs with A fumigatus precipitins. Serum from these 14 dogs also reacted in CIE tests with a number of Penicillium species antigens.

A 30-year-old, previously healthy, non-addicted man presented with a chronic spinal meningitis complicated by arachnoiditis and spinal cord compression. Biopsy showed a chronic granulomatous leptomeningitis, in which some cells contained branching septate organisms that were immunostained with an antiserum to Aspergillus fumigatus. Precipitins to A. fumigatus were detected in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), but not in blood, and aspergillus infection was apparently restricted to the leptomeninges. Clinically successful treatment led to the disappearance of CSF precipitins and oligoclonal bands.

Methods for rapid detection of viral antigens in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are needed to aid in the differentiation of viral from bacterial meningitis. Immunological investigations of 37 patients with bagassosis, 92 unaffected bagasse workers, and 150 non-exposed controls showed that precipitins against extracts of bagasse could be demonstrated just as frequently in the unaffected and the non-exposed as in the affected. CONCLUSION: The sinuses should be considered as a bacterial reservoir and a target for surgery and antibiotic treatment in patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). The observed decrease in serum precipitating antibodies (precipitins) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa may indicate a beneficial effect of combined endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) and concomitant medical treatment.
