Multi-level factors of Chinese American family caregivers of individuals with dementia during COVID-19.

Chinese American caregivers face unique hurdles for family members with dementia. This study identified individual and contextual factors influencing family caregiving and ways in which caregivers managed pandemic-related challenges. A cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted in the Northwest region of the United States. Eligible Chinese American caregivers from a community-based organization were recruited. Semi-structured interviews were in participants' preferred languages. Thematic analysis and deductive coding were used. The analysis (N = 16) showed that individual factors containe

Whole-Body MRI Surveillance of Cancer Predisposition Syndromes: Current Best Practice Guidelines for Use, Performance, and Interpretation.

OBJECTIVE. Whole-body MRI is a valuable tool in the surveillance of cancer predisposition syndromes (CPSs). Because it allows wide-FOV imaging without ionizing radiation, whole-body MRI is ideal in pediatric patients, enabling efficient assessment of different organ systems for multifocal disease. This article summarizes the use of whole-body MRI in pediatric patients with CPSs for earlier detection of malignancy, provides evidence where available, and offers guidance where lacking because of the rarity of CPSs. Protocol modifications and technique performance in specific CPSs are also conside

The costs and effectiveness of different benefit designs for treating tobacco dependence: results from a randomized trial.

This research estimated the costs and effectiveness of three different benefit designs for treating tobacco dependence: drugs only (nicotine replacement therapy patch, nasal spray, inhaler, and Zyban); drugs and counseling (drugs and proactive telephone counseling); and drugs if counseling (drugs conditional on enrollment in counseling). A sample of 393 adult smokers enrolled in a California preferred provider organization was randomly assigned to one of three study groups. After eight months, there were no significant increases in quit attempts or quit rates in the groups with covered drugs a

In vivo and in silico models of Drosophila for Parkinson's disease.

The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has emerged as an important model organism to shed light on neurodegeneration. Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder, the cause of which is still mostly unclear. The long-term use of available PD drugs may have major side effects, and they only target the symptoms without providing any effective cure for the disease. Therefore, in vivo and in silico approaches are extensively used to model PD-like phenotypes in Drosophila and investigate cellular alterations underlying PD pathogenesis. In vivo models are particula

The influence of garden spatial configuration on tourist behavior: A systematic review based on Space Syntax.

As composite spaces that integrate nature and culture, gardens are no longer regarded as merely static objects of visual appreciation in the context of urbanization, but have become essential venues for public cultural tourism and leisure. Consequently, the behavioral characteristics of tourists in gardens have attracted increasing academic attention. Space syntax, as a tool for analyzing the influence of spatial organization on human behavior, quantifies spatial configuration characteristics and can reveal how garden spatial configuration affects tourists' movement paths and spatial preferenc

E-FTMap: A Protein Structure Based Pharmacophore Identification Server for Guiding Fragment Expansion.

In fragment-based drug design (FBDD), libraries of low molecular weight compounds are screened against a receptor. Due to their size, fragment hits typically bind with weak affinities by forming a handful of highly efficient interactions with the receptor. Such fragment hits must be expanded into more potent lead compounds in order to achieve higher binding affinities. Approaches for expanding fragments to leads include growing-the iterative expansion of the scaffold, and merging-the linking of two fragment hits. In both cases the design can be facilitated by information on the ligand binding

Parents' preference for the inclusion of pediatric vaccines in the Chinese National Immunization Program: A discrete choice experiment.

The National Immunization Program (NIP) has significantly improved public health in China. However, current NIP coverage does not fully meet China's disease prevention needs. Some pediatric vaccines recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and widely used in other countries are not included. Currently, public participation can provide valuable insights for prioritizing vaccine inclusion in the NIP. This study aims to construct a prioritization model for evaluating pediatric vaccines that could be incorporated into the NIP based on Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) and Swing Weighting

Does copper contamination change thermotaxis of the soil arthropod Folsomia candida (Collembola)?

Behavioural thermoregulation (thermotaxis) is essential for soil invertebrates to evade thermal extremes in terrestrial environments. Extensive and continuous use of copper (Cu) based products has led to elevated Cu concentration in soils across the globe and in some areas reaching concentrations that are hazardous to soil invertebrates. We hypothesised that environmental stressors, for example, exposure to heavy metals may compromise the adaptive behavioural thermoregulation of organisms, but very little is known of such interactions. In this study, we chose Cu as a model toxicant and investi

Contrasting Volatilomes of Livestock Dung Drive Preference of the Dung Beetle Bubas bison (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae).

Volatile cues can play a significant role in the location and discrimination of food resources by insects. Dung beetles have been reported to discriminate among dung types produced by different species, thereby exhibiting behavioral preferences. However, the role of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in dung localization and preference remains largely unexplored in dung beetles. Here we performed several studies: firstly, cage olfactometer bioassays were performed to evaluate the behavioral responses of Bubas bison (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) to VOCs emanating from fresh horse, sheep, and cattle

Artificial Intelligence-Based Diagnostic Support System for Functional Dyspepsia Based on Brain Activity and Food Preference.

Background and aim Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) are disorders where no organic clinical abnormalities are detected such as functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The brain activity of individuals with FD and IBS differs from that of healthy controls. Artificial intelligence can distinguish healthy controls from individuals with DGBI using several biomarkers. This study aimed to establish an artificial intelligence-based diagnostic support system using food preferences and brain activity in patients with DGBI. Methods ROME IV criteria were used to diagnose pa

Impact of immunosuppressive drugs on efficacy of mesenchymal stem cell therapy for suppressing renal fibrosis.

Preemptive regenerative medicine using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) may provide a novel therapeutic approach to prevent the progression from organ damage to organ failure. Although immunosuppressive drugs are often used in patients with organ disorder, their impact on MSC therapy remains unclear. We investigated the effects of immunosuppressive drugs on the therapeutic efficacy of MSCs. We created unilateral ureteral obstruction models, as a well-established model of renal fibrosis, a preliminary stage of organ failure. Three immunosuppressive drugs (methylprednisolone, cyclosporine, and cycl

Heart Transplantation With Donation After Circulatory Death.

Heart transplantation remains the preferred option for improving quality of life and survival for patients suffering from end-stage heart failure. Unfortunately, insufficient supply of cardiac grafts has become an obstacle. Increasing organ availability with donation after circulatory death (DCD) may be a promising option to overcome the organ shortage. Unlike conventional donation after brain death, DCD organs undergo a period of warm, global ischemia between circulatory arrest and graft procurement, which raises concerns for graft quality. Nonetheless, the potential of DCD heart transplantat

Informing People-Centered Target Product Profiles for TB Diagnostics: A Multi-Country Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Timely and accurate tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis remains a key challenge in high-burden settings. The World Health Organization (WHO) has developed Target Product Profiles (TPPs) to guide diagnostic development, which have largely reflected the perspectives of experts, with limited input from people affected by TB. This qualitative study explored preferences and experiences to inform people-centered TB diagnostic strategies. METHODS: We conducted 75 semi-structured interviews with adults undergoing TB evaluation at outpatient clinics in India, the Philippines, South Africa, Uganda,

Dental service provision in Victorian residential aged care facilities.

BACKGROUND: The Australian population is ageing, and a growing proportion of elderly Australians are now living in residential aged care facilities (RACFs). These residents are at high risk of developing dental diseases, have more teeth present now than at any time in the past 50 years and often have difficulty maintaining adequate oral hygiene. Traditionally, dental service provision has been problematic and sporadic for these residents. METHODS: A postal survey of a random sample of Victorian general dentists and Directors of Nursing (DONs) of Victorian RACFs was undertaken in 2006 to ascer
