Italian prisoners with tuberculosis in the early nineteenth century: the experience in the Pianosa prison hospital.

In the late nineteenth century, with industrial growth and the resulting mass urbanisation, tuberculosis represented a plague mainly among the poor social classes. The outdated and crowded Italian prisons (formerly old monasteries) during the early 1900s were insufficient to "host" the multitude of inmates condemned or waiting for judgment. Italian prisoners were beset by hunger and poor hygiene facilities. Clothes did not differ between winter and summer. The Criminal Sanatorium of Pianosa was officially inaugurated in 1907, but from the 1860s it had been set up to host an agricultural penal

HOW THE U.S. PRISON BOOM HAS CHANGED THE AGE DISTRIBUTION OF THE PRISON POPULATION.

This article provides a demographic exposition of the changes in the U.S prison population during the period of mass incarceration that began in the late twentieth century. By drawing on data from the Survey of Inmates in State Correctional Facilities (1974-2004) for inmates 17-72 years of age (N = 336), we show that the age distribution shifted upward dramatically: Only 16 percent of the state prison population was 40 years old or older in 1974; by 2004, this percentage had doubled to 33 percent with the median age of prisoners rising from 27 to 34 years old. By using an estimable function ap

Gatekeeping harm reduction in Canadian Federal Prisons: Perspectives on the threat risk assessment for the prison needle exchange program by prison administrative leadership.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Prison needle exchange programs (PNEPs) are evidence-based, cost-effective interventions that prevent transmission of blood-borne viruses. PNEPs were introduced in a minority of Canadian federal prisons in 2018; however, participation is contingent on a mandatory approval process known as a "Threat Risk Assessment" (TRA). Although the TRA seeks to protect institutional safety and staff well-being, it has delayed access and restricted program participation. We aimed to explore prison administrators' perceptions of the TRA, including its goals and potential alternatives, wit

A Systematic Review of Abuse or Overprescription of Bupropion in American Prisons and a Synthesis of Case Reports on Bupropion Abuse in American Prison and Non-prison Systems.

Illicit drug use is a huge problem in the US prison system. The objectives of this study are (1) to systematically investigate the prevalence of bupropion abuse in American prisons along with associated problems, and (2) to synthesize available case reports on this topic in both prison and non-prison settings. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses, we searched five databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, CINAHL, and PsycINFO) and used Covidence software for screening and reviewing identified articles. The final search date was February 21, 2023. Newcastle-Otta

The Effects of Prison Visits From Family Members on Prisoners' Well-Being, Prison Rule Breaking, and Recidivism: A Review of Research Since 1991.

The effect of family visits on prisoner well-being and future behavior is an important consideration in the development of prison policy. This review systematically examines current research findings that explore the impact of prison visits from family members on three specific offender outcomes: prisoners' well-being, rule breaking within the prison, and recidivism. The review focuses on visits by family and does not duplicate earlier reviews but rather extends them into current literature, through identification of empirical studies conducted post 1989, published since 1991. Ten studies met

Hepatitis C infection among people incarcerated in Norwegian prisons.

BACKGROUND: People in prison have a high prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection due to the prevalent incarceration of people who inject drugs. The primary aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of HCV infection among people incarcerated in Norwegian prisons with special focus on people who inject drug (PWID). METHODS: Consecutive, newly incarcerated individuals in 6 prisons were offered to participate. Within the first two weeks of incarceration, participants were tested for anti-HCV and the presence of HCV RNA. Demographic, social and behavioral data including drug use was co

Health conditions among women in prisons: a systematic review.

Despite rapidly rising incarceration rates, the health needs of women in custody are overlooked. This Review aims to summarise the current evidence on the health of women in prisons around the world. In this systematic review, we searched peer-reviewed and grey literature databases for quantitative studies published between Jan 1, 2003, and Jan 29, 2025. Our population of interest was people detained in carceral spaces designated for women as part of the criminal-legal system worldwide. We included studies that reported the prevalence of health conditions (based on the Global Burden of Disease

Transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in four prisons in Colombia.

Our study aimed to describe the transmission dynamics and genotypic diversity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in people deprived of liberty (PDL) in four Colombian prisons. Our cohort study included 64 PDL with bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosed in four Colombian prisons. The 132 isolates were genotyped using 24-mycobacterial interspersed repeated units-variable number tandem repeats (MIRUs-VNTR). A cluster was defined when ≥2 isolates from different PDL had the same genotype. Tuberculosis acquired in prison was considered when ≥2 persons were within the same cluster an

Suicide, suicide attempts and self-harm in Moroccan prisons.

PURPOSE: High rates of suicide and self-harm are reported in prisons in Western countries, while fewer studies exist from a non-Western context. This study aims to identify rates of suicide, non-fatal suicide attempts and self-harm in Moroccan prisons and to better understand the context, methods, tools, predictors and profile of persons engaged in the acts. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The authors report findings from a mixed-methods study carried out before an intervention project. The study consists of a systematic literature review, an analysis of suicide case files, a quantitative survey

Tuberculosis Outbreaks in State Prisons, United States, 2011-2019.

Objectives. To understand the frequency, magnitude, geography, and characteristics of tuberculosis outbreaks in US state prisons. Methods. Using data from the National Tuberculosis Surveillance System, we identified all cases of tuberculosis during 2011 to 2019 that were reported as occurring among individuals incarcerated in a state prison at the time of diagnosis. We used whole-genome sequencing to define 3 or more cases within 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms within 3 years as clustered; we classified clusters with 6 or more cases during a 3-year period as tuberculosis outbreaks. Results.

Litigation Over Sleep Deprivation in U.S. Jails and Prisons.

Incarceration can disrupt healthy sleep, and insomnia is associated with psychiatric symptoms and poor general medical health among incarcerated people. In recent years, considerable litigation has arisen over sleep deprivation in U.S. jails and prisons. This column examines litigation over conditions of incarceration, such as noise, inadequate bedding, constant illumination, medication restrictions, and early wake-up times, that may affect sleep duration and quality. The potential adverse effects of inadequate sleep on incarcerated individuals, as well as associated litigation, suggest the ne
