BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Radiation proctitis is a common complication after pelvic irradiation. One to five percent of these patients will develop intractable or massive hemorrhagic radiation proctitis that will require repeated hospital admissions and blood transfusions. In the recent 2022 monkeypox (Mpox) global outbreak, cases have been mostly documented among men who have sex with men. Proctitis was reported in almost 14% of cases. In this study, four Mpox-confirmed cases requiring hospitalizations for severe proctitis were characterized by clinical, virological, microbiological, endoscopic, and histological aspects. The study showed the presence of lymphofollicular lesions associated with Mpox virus rectal infection for the first time.

An ongoing outbreak of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) L2b proctitis, predominantly in HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM), has been reported in industrialised countries. A case of reactive arthritis after L2b proctitis is described. This case expands the spectrum of severe complications related to LGV L2b proctitis. Since this infection may be asymptomatic, this organism should be screened for in HIV-positive MSM with symptoms consistent with reactive arthritis.

Hydrogen peroxide is a widely available disinfectant that has been reported to cause colitis. We report a case of a 67-year-old man who presented with an acute proctitis caused by a self-inflicted 3% hydrogen peroxide enema. The patient's intention was to cure himself of a recently diagnosed prostate cancer, because the waiting list for oncological consultation was deemed too long. The pathogenesis of hydrogen peroxide mucosal injury and a review of the literature is discussed.

PURPOSE: To evaluate prospectively the effect of sodium butyrate enemas on the treatment of acute and the potential influence on late radiation-induced proctitis.

Syphilitic proctitis is a rare presentation of sexually transmitted infection that poses a diagnostic challenge as it mimics rectal cancer clinically, radiologically and endoscopically. We report a case of a 66-year-old male patient with a background of HIV infection presenting with obstructive bowel symptoms and initial diagnosis of rectal cancer on CT. Sigmoidoscopy and histopathology were non-diagnostic. A diagnosis of secondary syphilis was suspected after obtaining sexual history and diagnostic serology, avoiding planned surgical intervention.
