Restoring professionalism: the physician fitness-for-duty evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: We compare findings from 10 years of experience evaluating physicians referred for fitness-to-practice assessment to determine whether those referred for disruptive behavior are more or less likely to be declared fit for duty than those referred for mental health, substance abuse or sexual misconduct. METHOD: Deidentified data from 381 physicians evaluated by the Vanderbilt Comprehensive Assessment Program (2001-2012) were analyzed and compared to general physician population data and also to previous reports of physician psychiatric diagnosis found by MEDLINE search. RESULTS: Co

A competency framework for occupational health leadership.

BACKGROUND: While general leadership competencies exist across the healthcare sector, the specific leadership required for occupational health (OH) has been under-researched to date. Given the current opportunity and challenge for OH to impact productivity in the UK by tackling known issues with work and health, strong and distinctive OH leadership is required. AIMS: To identify the competencies required for effective leadership in OH and propose a conceptual leadership framework tailored to OH practice. METHODS: A two-stage process comprising interviews with OH leaders and a consultation ex

Chaplains in Psychedelic Assisted Therapy: Rationale and Competencies.

The rapid expansion of psychedelic research has opened significant pathways of opportunity in treating mental health disorders. Participants in recent clinical trials consistently report mystical-type experiences during dosing sessions, and some scholars posit that such experiences themselves help mediate clinical improvements in depression, PTSD, anxiety, and substance use disorders. These reports are in keeping with the historical reality that the use of psychedelic substances and plant medicine has been tied to spiritual experience and shamanic ceremonial practice. Professional clinical cha

Wilderness leadership--on the job.

Lessons taught and learned in the challenging, unpredictable environment of a wilderness expedition have direct applications to today's business world. That's according to two directors at the National Outdoor Leadership School, who in this article share five principles for expedition--and career-success. (1) Practice leadership. The fundamental philosophy of NOLS is that leadership can be learned-even by those who don't think they have a natural ability to lead. You just need to practice making decisions, then reflecting on and learning from the outcomes. (2) Lead from everywhere. In an exped

In praise of the incomplete leader.

Today's top executives are expected to do everything right, from coming up with solutions to unfathomably complex problems to having the charisma and prescience to rally stakeholders around a perfect vision of the future. But no one leader can be all things to all people. It's time to end the myth of the complete leader, say the authors. Those at the top must come to understand their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Only by embracing the ways in which they are incomplete can leaders fill in the gaps in their knowledge with others' skills. The incomplete leader has the confidence and humi

Interactions among the imagination, expertise reversal, and element interactivity effects.

Interactions among the imagination, expertise reversal, and element interactivity effects were investigated in 2 experiments. In Experiment 1, less knowledgeable primary school students learning to use a bus timetable produced better performance under study than imagination conditions, but an increase in their experience reversed the result, producing the imagination effect. Experiment 2, in which students were taught to use a temperature line graph, replicated these results and demonstrated that the effects were more likely to be obtained using complex material. It was concluded that learners

Teacher Emotional Competence for Inclusive Education: A Systematic Review.

Although many studies have examined which teaching strategies are effective in achieving inclusive education, less attention has been paid to the role of teachers' emotional competence. This study aimed to systematically review the literature on the relationship between teachers' emotional competence and inclusive education through the following research questions: (1) What aspects of teachers' emotional competence have been studied in relation to inclusive education? (2) How does teachers' emotional competence influence different aspects of inclusive education? Five electronic databases were

Synthesising Generative Artificial Intelligence Competency Domains for Medical Education Faculty.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI (GenAI), is reshaping clinical care and medical education, requiring medical education faculty to develop new competencies. As GenAI becomes integrated into clinical and teaching workflows, faculty must guide learners in AI-enabled environments. Although existing frameworks outline AI competencies for clinicians or learners, few synthesise competencies specifically for faculty roles. This review addresses that gap by synthesising AI and GenAI competency frameworks to identify GenAI domains relevant to medical education faculty.

Towards a standardized competency-profile for peer-to-peer-teachers in medical education - a systematic mapping review.

BACKGROUND: Medical education research acknowledges "P2P-teaching" as an effective, scalable, and cost-effective possibility for educating students in human medicine. At the same time, the medical field is yet to form an empirically founded and overarching description of necessary P2P-teaching competencies across medical subjects. In order to create an overarching picture of relevant student P2P-teaching competencies in medical education, this article raises the question, "What are the relevant teaching competencies in qualification measures for P2P-teachers in medical education?". METHOD: We

Opening the door to the full scope of midwifery practice: Midwives' experiences of implementing continuity of care in Ethiopia.

PROBLEM: Few midwives are given the opportunity to provide continuity of midwife care despite the suggested benefits. BACKGROUND: Translating evidence into practice remains challenging, particularly in low-income settings where workforce limitations, structural constraints, and leadership capacity influence implementation. Although continuity of care models have gained increasing attention globally, little is known about how midwives in low-income countries perceive their readiness and capacity to initiate and sustain such models. AIM: To explore how midwives experience and perceive their ca

International confederation for cleft lip and palate and related craniofacial anomalies task force report: speech assessment.

This paper describes the outcome of the "Speech Assessment" Task Force of the 12th International Congress of the Confederation for Cleft Lip and Palate and Related Craniofacial Anomalies, held in 2013. This task force attempted to identify a draft set of professional competencies required by speech professionals for the perceptual evaluation of cleft palate speech. The task force also generated a series of general and competency-specific questions that could be useful in subsequent evaluation and study of these competencies, particularly in regards to the application of these competencies to c

Relational rehabilitation: competencies and qualities needed in psychosocial rehabilitation when responding to hope and hopelessness.

This study explores how rehabilitation professionals engage with the dynamic nature of hope in acquired brain injury rehabilitation, identifying the qualities and competencies needed to respond with care. Using a qualitative design, data were collected through focus groups and individual interviews with cross-disciplinary professionals at a Danish rehabilitation centre. Reflexive thematic analysis revealed four distinct episodes of hope, each demanding a different response. Drawing on the concepts of 'relational caring' and 'practicing presence', and engaging with empirical data, essential qua

Women's expectations of physicians in sexual health concerns.

This study surveyed 56 women to assess their expectations for the primary care physician to inquire about sexual concerns and to diagnose and treat sexual problems. The study indicates that the physician is the professional most frequently consulted about sexual concerns and that patients expect even more leadership from the physician in raising the issue of sexual health. Women look for empathy, warmth, confidentiality, and professional competence in discussions with their doctor about sexual matters; and they are open to referrals for treatment of sexual problems and physician-sponsored sex …
