Learning hydrodynamic signatures through proprioceptive sensing by bioinspired swimmers.

Objects moving in water or stationary objects in streams create a vortex wake. Such vortex wakes encode information about the objects and the flow conditions. Underwater robots that often function with constrained sensing capabilities can benefit from extracting this information from vortex wakes. Many species of fish do exactly this, by sensing flow features using their lateral lines as part of their multimodal sensing. To replicate such capabilities in robots, significant research has been devoted to developing artificial lateral line sensors that can be placed on the surface of a robot to d

Movement detection thresholds reveal proprioceptive impairments in developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is associated with vision and hearing impairments. Whether these impairments are causes or comorbidities is controversial. Because both senses are heavily involved in reading, cognitive theories argue that sensory impairments are comorbidities that result from a lack of reading practice. Sensory theories instead argue that this is sensory impairments that cause reading disabilities. Here we test a discriminant prediction: whether sensory impairments in developmental dyslexia are restrained to reading-related senses or encompass other senses. Sensory theories predict that

Toward a Proprioceptive Neural Interface that Mimics Natural Cortical Activity.

The dramatic advances in efferent neural interfaces over the past decade are remarkable, with cortical signals used to allow paralyzed patients to control the movement of a prosthetic limb or even their own hand. However, this success has thrown into relief, the relative lack of progress in our ability to restore somatosensation to these same patients. Somatosensation, including proprioception, the sense of limb position and movement, plays a crucial role in even basic motor tasks like reaching and walking. Its loss results in crippling deficits. Historical work dating back decades and even ce…

Effects of proprioceptive sense-based Kinesio taping on walking imbalance.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to determine how application of Kinesio tape to the upper and lower limbs affects walking through stimulation of the proprioceptive sense. [Subjects and Methods] Twelve patients diagnosed with hemiplegia due to stroke were selected as the subjects of the study. To ascertain the effects of Kinesio taping on walking, all subjects performed a straight line walking test three times while barefoot. In terms of the actual taping application, elastic Kinesio tape was used on the hemiplegic side in all subjects. [Results] The results of testing showed a significant

Routine clinical testing underestimates proprioceptive deficits in Friedreich's ataxia.

Friedreich's ataxia (FA) is the most common recessive ataxia in the Western world with degeneration of dorsal root ganglia neurons as its major neuropathological hallmark. The sensitivity of clinical tools commonly used for the assessment of the proprioceptive component of FA is currently unknown. We hypothesised that current clinical testing underestimates proprioceptive deficits in FA patients. Such an underestimation would hamper our understanding of the components of FA, the monitoring of disease progression, and the detection of deficits in the current advent of drug trials. We compared c

Postnatal refinement of proprioceptive afferents in the cat cervical spinal cord.

Proprioceptive afferent (PA) information is integrated with signals from descending pathways, including the corticospinal tract (CST), by spinal interneurons in the dorsal horn and intermediate zone for controlling movements. PA spinal projections, and the reflexes that they evoke, develop prenatally. The CST projects to the spinal cord postnatally, and its connections are subsequently refined. Consequently, the tract becomes effective in transmitting control signals from motor cortex to muscle. This suggests sequential development of PAs and the CST rather than co-development. In this study w

The effect of instability and subsequent anterior shoulder repair on proprioceptive ability.

Proprioceptive ability was prospectively evaluated in patients with recurrent traumatic anterior instability who subsequently underwent anterior shoulder repair. Thirty consecutive patients were evaluated for passive position sense and detection of motion with the shoulder in flexion, abduction, and external rotation 1 week before surgery. They were then retested at 6 and 12 months postoperatively. A significant deficit in proprioception was found when the unstable side was compared with the uninvolved side before surgery. Six months after surgical repair, position sense showed an improvement …

The effect of recurrent ankle inversion sprain and taping on proprioception at the ankle.

PURPOSE: A common explanation for the tendency for ankle inversion sprains to recur is that proprioception is impaired by the initial sprain. It is further hypothesized that the application of tape prevents further sprains by enhancing proprioceptive acuity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether proprioception was impaired in people with recurrent ankle inversion sprain, and whether taping the ankle provided enhanced proprioceptive ability. METHODS: We compared the ability to perceive passive plantarflexion and dorsiflexion movements imposed at the relaxed ankle in 25 subjects wi…

Inspiratory augmentation during asphyxic hyperpnoea and gasping: proprioceptive influences.

The relative inspiratory augmentations of sternomastoid, scalene, external intercostal, interchondral and diaphragmatic electromyographic activities were examined during the progressive asphyxia induced by rebreathing in pentobarbitone/urethane anaesthetized rabbits. Diaphragmatic activity augmented significantly less than that of the scalene, intercostal and interchondral muscles in response to the asphyxic increase in inspiratory drive (hyperpnoea). Cervical vagotomy significantly increased the levels of inspiratory activity during the asphyxic hyperpnoea but did not abolish these relations.

Proprioceptive contributions to tactile identification of figures: dependence on figure size.

Studies on the recognition of objects or shapes explored by a hand or finger have concentrated on the relative merits of different methods of exploration--in particular, whether the exploring hand or finger is moved by the subject himself (active), is guided by an assistant (passive), or remains stationary with the shape being moved by an assistant (tactile). These factors, together with another variable--the size of the explored shape--were investigated in twelve normal adults whose task, without the aid of vision, was to explore and identify various shapes with the tip of the extended right

Proprioceptive afferent fibers in the cranial nerves III, IV and VI.

The purpose of the present works was to clarify whether the cranial nerves III, IV and VI carry proprioceptive afferent fibres from the extrinsic ocular muscles. In sheep the picture is now clear. The cranial nerves III, IV and VI carry many large proprioceptive fibres (12-16 micrometer) to the central nervous system. These nerves also contain many small fibres of the y-range (2-6 micrometer) which innervate the intrafusal muscle fibres in the spindles. In man the picture is still vague: most of the spindles are not typical, the large proprioceptive fibres (12-16 micrometer) and the small y-fi

The role of vision and proprioception in implicit and explicit self-movement recognition.

The recognition of one's own body is a fundamental component of body self-representation. While several studies have reported a self-advanta … it recognition of one's own movements, and disentangling the respective contributions of vision and proprioception within this framework, remain scarce. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the self-advantage effect previously reported for static body parts extends to the recognition of one's own movements, in visual and proprioceptive conditions.
