Maintenance of Social Anxiety in Stuttering: A Cognitive-Behavioral Model.

PURPOSE: Stuttering is a speech disorder frequently accompanied by anxiety in social-evaluative situations. A growing body of research has confirmed a significant rate of social anxiety disorder among adults who stutter. Social anxiety disorder is a chronic and disabling anxiety disorder associated with substantial life impairment. Several influential models have described cognitive-behavioral factors that contribute to the maintenance of social anxiety in nonstuttering populations. The purpose of the present article is to apply these leading models to the experience of social anxiety for peop

The Impact of Relocation Patterns on Psychological Stress.

This study investigated how relocation patterns affect disaster survivors' psychological stress on the diverse durations and spaces of relocation. It analyzed a 10-year data set of 1,236 families affected by 2009's Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan, identifying six relocation patterns through dynamic time warping (DTW). A hierarchical linear model was utilized, revealing the discernible impacts of environmental factors, sociocultural factors, and family-level socioeconomic factors on psychological stress. The study revealed that survivors who quickly found stable residences after the disaster initiall

Social exclusion, but not withdrawal, is diminished by a friend's level of acceptance: A provisions model.

Using the Actor-Partner-Interdependence Model, a friend's level of peer acceptance on the stability of a child's social withdrawal and peer exclusion was assessed with a sample of 252 fifth- and sixth-grade girls and boys of European and North-African descent from lower- and upper-middle class neighborhoods in Montreal, Quebec, in 2015/2016. Sociometric choices at T1 were used to create 126 mutual friend dyads. Exclusion and withdrawal were measured at T1 and T2 with peer assessments, 8 weeks apart. Findings revealed that children who were highly excluded at T1 were relatively less excluded at

How Middle School Teachers With Different Creative Personality Types Cope With the Challenges of Online Teaching: A Typological Approach.

Teachers worldwide, including those in Taiwan, were compelled to transition from traditional classroom settings to online teaching because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This abrupt shift created numerous challenges. The ways in which individuals cope with such difficulties are closely related to their creative personality traits. Unlike conventional correlational analyses that examine relationships between specific dimensions, a typological approach emphasizes differences among distinct groups across particular variables. This study explored the perceived difficulties and coping strategies of midd

Will rumination necessarily amplify the impact of cyber-ostracism on college students' cyber-aggression? Evidence from longitudinal data.

Cyber-ostracism, a prevalent form of online social exclusion among college students, has been increasingly associated with aggressive behaviors in digital environments. Grounded in the General Aggression Model (GAM) and the Temporal Need-Threat Model (TNTM), this study examines the longitudinal mechanisms through which cyber-ostracism promotes cyber-aggression, emphasizing the mediating role of negative rumination and the moderating effect of positive rumination. A two-wave longitudinal design spanning six months was employed, involving 1166 college students (51.63 % female; M = 19.79, SD = 1.

Allocentric time-to-contact and the devastating effect of perspective.

With regard to impending object-object collisions, observers may use different sources of information to judge time to contact (tC). We introduced changes of the observer's vantage point to test among three sets of hypotheses: (1) Observers may use a distance-divided-by-velocity algorithm or, alternatively, elaborated τ-formulae, all of which give exact tC information; (2) observers may use simple τ-formulae (i.e., formulae of the type: visual angle divided by its own first temporal derivative); (3) observers may capitalize on non-τ variables. Hypotheses (2) and (3) imply specific patterns of

The role of schools in the spread of mumps among unvaccinated children: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, epidemics of vaccine preventable diseases are largely confined to an orthodox protestant minority with religious objections to vaccination. The clustering of unvaccinated children in orthodox protestant schools can foster the spread of epidemics. School closure has nevertheless not been practiced up until now. A mumps epidemic in 2007-2008 gave us an opportunity to study the role of schools in the spread of a vaccine preventable disease in a village with low vaccination coverage. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among the students in four ele

The mechanism of physiological height vertigo. I. Theoretical approach and psychophysics.

A theory is presented supporting a geometrical explanation of physiological height vertigo as a 'distance vertigo' created by visual destabilization of posture when the distance between the observer and visible stationary contrasts becomes critically large. Though height vertigo is generally regarded as a psychopathological process, we hypothesize that it might instead result from an intersensory mismatch when visual information is at variance with vestibular and proprioceptive inputs. Psychophysical experiments confirming the hypothesis revealed that: 1) height vertigo is clearly related to b

Benefits of Cardiac Rehabilitation on Functional Status and Mood Disorders in Elderly and Very Elderly Patients: A PROSPECTIVE COHORT STUDY.

PURPOSE: Patients ≥80 yr are not frequently referred for cardiac rehabilitation (CR). This study aimed to describe the benefit of CR in the very elderly population in comparison with patients ≤65 and 66-79 yr in terms of gain in functional status and improvement of mood disorders. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, cohort, single-center study. Physical performance was evaluated with a 6-min walk test (6MWT). Anxiety, depression, and overall psychological distress were evaluated with Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scores. Primary outcomes were the percent improvement in the pre

An Integrative Bio-Psycho-Social Theory of Anorexia Nervosa.

UNLABELLED: The need for novel approaches to understanding and treating anorexia nervosa (AN) is well recognized. The aim of this paper is to describe an integrative bio-psycho-social theory of maintaining factors in AN. We took a triangulation approach to develop a clinically relevant theory with face validity and internal consistency. We developed theoretical ideas from our clinical practice and reviewed theoretical ideas within the eating disorders and wider bio-psycho-social literature. The synthesis of these ideas and concepts into a clinically meaningful framework is described here. We s

Structured ambiguity and the definition of psychiatric illness: adjustment disorder among medical inpatients.

Adjustment disorder is one of the most common psychiatric diagnoses given to patients hospitalized for medical and surgical problems. This article argues that the diagnosis, in this context, often serves strategic, non-clinical ends for consultation-liaison psychiatrists, who must negotiate their interstitial position through an essentially ambiguous diagnosis. In these cases, 'adjustment disorder' emerges from and reproduces tensions between such cultural dichotomies as mind/body and social/individual that marginalize psychiatry in medical settings.

Cancer Treatment During COVID-19: Resilience of Individuals With Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Versus Community Controls.

BACKGROUND: Among all patients with cancer, those with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) experience the most distress. Although new therapies are improving survival, it is unknown whether receiving immunotherapy or targeted therapy during the COVID-19 pandemic increases patients' psychological vulnerability. To meet clinical needs, knowledge of patients' COVID-19 perceptions and safety behaviors is essential. Thus, this study compared patients' psychological responses at diagnosis and during COVID-19 and compared patients with similar individuals without cancer during the same period

Clothing buoyancy and underwater horizontal swim distance after exiting a submersed vehicle simulator.

BACKGROUND: Winter road workers, who drive heavy vehicles over ice-covered waterways, are at risk for ice failure, vehicle submersion, and subsequent drowning in frigid water. Although some jurisdictions require these workers to wear flotation clothing, there are concerns that, following an underwater exit in fast-moving water, increased clothing buoyancy may reduce ability to swim against the current to safely return to the ice opening. METHODS: Using a simulator in a swimming pool (3.7 m deep, 28 degrees C), 11 volunteers (5 women) were submersed 8 times each to test the effects from both a

Parental acceptance-rejection and brain network connectivity: A naturalistic neuroimaging study.

Guided by interpersonal acceptance-rejection theory (IPARTheory), this study investigated whether young adults' memories of parental acceptance in childhood (feeling loved and cared about) versus memories of parental rejection (feeling unloved and not cared about) are associated with intrinsic brain connectivity. Forty participants (Mage = 19 years) completed self-report measures and underwent fMRI scanning watching naturalistic video stimuli. One group reported having been accepted by both parents in childhood and described themselves as psychologically well-adjusted (AcceptedAdjusted, n = 20

Reduction of rejection-related emotions by transcranial direct current stimulation over right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex in borderline personality disorder: A double-blind randomized pilot study.

AIMS: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) patients show negative emotional reactions to both excluding and including social scenarios, with levels normalizing only during extreme inclusion. Prior research among healthy individuals highlights the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (rVLPFC) role in regulating emotional responses to social exclusion, since transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of rVLPFC decreases rejection-related emotions following social exclusion. This pilot study investigated whether, in BPD patients, tDCS over the rVLPFC reduces rejection-related emotions not o

Disability and perceived social exclusion in later working age in Germany - what role does employment play? A counterfactual mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is strong evidence that persons with disabilities are at greater risk of social exclusion in various areas of life. However, the role of employment for perceived social exclusion (PSE) among persons with disabilities has not yet been sufficiently researched. OBJECTIVE: This study addresses this gap by analyzing the mediating role of employment on the relationship between disabilities and PSE in women and men of later working age (40-64 yrs.). METHODS: We used a pooled data set from the 2014-2023 survey waves with 11,680 observations from the German Ageing Study (DEAS), a na

Autism traits and mental well-being: the mediating role of social camouflaging and the moderating role of social exclusion and public stigma.

There is a strong relationship between autism and mental health problems. Autistic individuals are more frequently exposed to stigma and social exclusion in social life, which may lead them to engage in socially desirable behaviors to camouflage themselves. Within this framework, the present study aimed to examine the relationship between autism traits and mental well-being, focusing on social camouflaging behaviors in the context of social exclusion and perceived stigma. The study sample consisted of 548 adults across Turkey, including 432 women (78.8%) and 116 men (21.2%). To test the propos
