Psychophysical and physiological forward masking studies: probe duration and rise-time effects.

To determine if the amount of forward masking observed in single auditory-nerve fibers of the chinchilla was sufficient to account for the amount of masking observed behaviorally in humans, thresholds for the detection of several types of probe signals following a forward masker were measured in both behavioral and physiological experiments. It is necessary to use the same probe stimulus characteristics in both behavioral and physiological experiments to make valid comparisons between the two measures of forward masking. Experiment 1 was behavioral and used human listeners. Two types of probe

The visual defect in multiple sclerosis and optic neuritis. A combined psychophysical and electrophysiological investigation.

Chromatic and achromatic visual function were investigated using psychophysical and evoked potential techniques in 32 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) or optic neuritis. There was no evidence for either chromatic or achromatic vision being selectively damaged. There was, however, some evidence that demyelination of the optic nerve causes a visual defect in which the transmission of high temporal frequencies is imparied. In some patients either a red or blue deficit was evident, but overall there was no evidence of a wavelength specific colour vision defect in our patient group. Reduction

[Normal and defective development of visual stimulus processing: psychophysical and electrophysiologic test results].

Two methods were developed for the assessment of normal and disturbed visual development in infancy and early childhood: the preferential looking procedure (PL) as a psychophysical method and measurement of visual evoked potentials (VEP) as an electrophysiological principle. Both methods test visual functions, but on different levels of the visual system. Proper interpretation of the methods requires direct comparison. This was accomplished over a 12-months period in infants and young children with normal and disturbed visual development in the first year of life. For normal infants older than

A comparison of force and depth of skin indentation upon psychophysical functions of tactile intensity.

Tactile sensory intensities related to force applied to the skin, and depth of skin indentation were measured with a magnitude estimation procedure at various sites on the left hand of four human subjects. These same skin sites were measured for "compressibility"--that is, the indentation depths that resulted from controlled forces. Graphic examination of the magnitude estimation data indicated that, in most cases, growth of sensory intensity was relatively shallow at the lower stimulus intensities, and steeper at higher stimulus intensities. The "breakpoint" between the shallow and the steep

An attempt for the application of the basic Law of Psychophysics (Fechner-Stevens Law) in the domain of visceral stimuli in humans.

The validity of the basic Law of Psychophysics proposed originally by Fechner and revised by Stevens had been tested in the domain of visceral perception. The experiments were carried out on six adult colonostomy patients. The distension of the sigmoid colon (the phi-value of the Fechner-Stevens equation) had been undertaken by the aid of a rubber balloon inserted into the intestinal stoma orifice and controlled by a computerized pneumatic system. The tracking of sensations of "gut-feelings" by the subjects (the psi-value of the Fechner-Stevens equation) had been made possible by applying the …

Neurophysiological and psychophysical mechanisms associated with immersive virtual reality-induced hypoalgesia: a systematic review.

Although growing evidence supports immersive virtual reality (IVR) as a nonpharmacological intervention for pain management, the mechanisms by which IVR induces hypoalgesia are still under debate. In this study, we review and evaluate candidate neurophysiological and psychophysical mechanisms underlying IVR-induced hypoalgesia and their experimental evidence. A preregistered systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, utilizing the databases Web of Science, Medline (through PubMed), SCOPUS, and APA PsycIN

Psychophysical assessment of color vision with the Cambridge Color Vision Test in unilateral functional amblyopia.

PURPOSE: Amblyopia is a cortical neurological disorder caused by abnormal visual experiences during the critical period for visual development. Recent works have shown that, in addition to the well-known visual alterations, such as changes in visual acuity, several perceptual aspects of vision are affected. This study aims to analyze and compare the effects of different types of amblyopia on visual color processing and determine whether these effects are correlated with visual acuity. METHODS: Our study sample comprised 42 amblyopic individuals, aged 7-40 years, (strabismus, n=16; anisometrop

Preliminary pharmacokinetic and psychophysical investigations after controlled oral and inhalative consumption of hexahydrocannabinol (HHC).

The semi-synthetic cannabinoid hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) has become a highly discussed topic in forensic toxicology since 2022 due to its legal availability at this time and its psychoactive effects. This study aimed to investigate the pharmacokinetics, effects, and immunological detectability of HHC after oral (25 mg HHC fruit gum) and inhalative (three puffs from HHC vape) consumption with three participants per group. Serum (up to 48 h), urine (up to five days), and saliva (up to 48 h) samples were collected at different relevant time points and analyzed by HPLC-MS/MS for (9R)/(9S)-HHC, 11-

ART Innovations: Fostering Women's Psychophysical Health between Bioethics Precepts and Human Rights.

Infertility is a highly relevant global issue affecting the reproductive health of at least 15% of reproductive-aged couples worldwide. The scope and severity of the infertility problem is even more prevalent in developing countries, mostly due to untreated reproductive tract infections (RTIs). Infertility, however, goes beyond the mere inability to procreate, but brings about profound psychological, social, and ethical implications of enormous magnitude. In vitro fertilization (IVF) and other assisted reproduction technologies (ARTs) have gradually become widespread therapeutic options. After

Testing Assumptions in Human Pain Models: Psychophysical Differences Between First and Second Pain.

UNLABELLED: Acute pain arises from activation of myelinated (A delta) and unmyelinated (C) nociceptive afferents, leading to first (A-fiber) or second (C-fiber) pain sensations. The current study sought to investigate first and second pain within glabrous and hairy skin sites in human upper limbs. Fifty healthy adults (25 male/25 female, 18-30 years old, mean = 20.5 ± 1.4 years) participated in a psychophysical study investigating electronically rated, thermal first and second pain sensations within the glabrous skin at the palm and hairy skin of the forearm. Repeated measures analysis of vari

Onset time of binocular rivalry and duration of inter-dominance periods as psychophysical markers of ADHD.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the main neurobiological disorders in young children. Despite its prevalence, current diagnosis is debated. In this study we tested whether measures of binocular rivalry (BR) can contribute to the diagnosis of ADHD. BR is a phenomenon that is produced when two different images are presented to the two eyes simultaneously. Under these conditions the image presented to one eye competes with that presented to the other eye in seeking to achieve perceptual dominance. This competition is resolved through the activation of a given percept cou

Is the pain-reducing effect of opioid medication reliable? A psychophysical study of morphine and pentazocine analgesia.

A number of laboratory studies have confirmed the efficacy of opioid medication in reducing pain generated by a number of psychophysical modalities. However, one implicit assumption of clinical and experimental pain testing of analgesics is that the analgesic response is stable and will be comparable across repeated administrations. In the current study, the repeatability of opioid analgesia was assessed in a randomized, double-blinded study using 3 psychophysical pain modalities (e.g., thermal, pressure, and ischemic) over 4 medication sessions (2 with active drug, 2 with placebo). Psychophysical and functional imaging evidence supporting the presence of central sensitization in a cohort of osteoarthritis patients.

OBJECTIVE: The groin pain experienced by patients with hip osteoarthritis (OA) is often accompanied by areas of referred pain and changes in skin sensitivity. We aimed to identify the supraspinal influences that underlie these clinical manifestations that we consider indicative of possible central sensitization. METHODS: Twenty patients with hip OA awaiting joint replacement and displaying signs of referred pain were recruited into the study, together with age-matched controls. All subjects completed pain psychology questionnaires and underwent quantitative sensory testing (QST) in their area

Psychophysically determined forces of dynamic pushing for female industrial workers: Comparison of two apparatuses.

Using psychophysics, the maximum acceptable forces for pushing have been previously developed using a magnetic particle brake (MPB) treadmill at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety. The objective of this study was to investigate the reproducibility of maximum acceptable initial and sustained forces while performing a pushing task at a frequency of 1min(-1) both on a MPB treadmill and on a high-inertia pushcart. This is important because our pushing guidelines are used extensively as a ergonomic redesign strategy and we would like the information to be as applicable as possible to …

Pain, psychosocial, sexual, and psychophysical characteristics of women with primary vs. secondary provoked vestibulodynia.

INTRODUCTION: Women with provoked vestibulodynia (PVD), a common cause of dyspareunia, are typically considered a homogeneous group. However, research suggests that differences on some factors (e.g., medical history, pain characteristics, psychological functioning, treatment response) exist based upon whether the pain was present at first intercourse (primary PVD: PVD1) or developed at some later point (secondary PVD: PVD2). AIMS: The purpose of this study was to examine differences in demographic variables, pain characteristics, psychosocial and psychosexual adjustment, and pain sensitivity

Testing of iatrogenic lingual nerve injury using a novel psychophysical method and oral reflexes.

In a case of long-term sensory loss in the tongue following third molar extraction, a novel, efficient and effective psychophysical test was used. This initial test, which includes the presentation of pairs of a real and fake stimulus, and a forced-choice response, was applied to determine whether relatively thick or thin afferent fibres of the lingual nerve were affected. The results suggested that thick fibres on the right tongue side were mainly affected. Sensory loss was confirmed and its extent assessed by a standard test determining thresholds of light touch. Furthermore, sensory functio

Genetic algorithms for adaptive psychophysical procedures: recipient-directed design of speech-processor MAPs.

OBJECTIVES: The goal of the research is to evaluate the application of genetic algorithms (GAs) in listener-directed optimization of audio-processing designs. We hypothesize that cochlear-implant recipients can use a GA-guided adaptive psychophysical search procedure to select useful designs from among a large number of speech processor MAPS. DESIGN: An adaptive psychophysical procedure was developed in which a listener's preferred four out of eight speech processor MAPs were updated according to a genetic algorithm. Experiments involving cochlear-implant recipients were conducted to characte
