Analysis of the transference neurosis in a child with transsexual symptoms.

This paper touches on two issues that have been disputed by child analysts: the genesis of the transsexual symptom complex, and the question of transference neurosis in child analysis. My observation, as reported previously (Loeb and Shane, 1980) and shown in the present case, is that the transsexual symptom complex can develop out of intrapsychic conflict and can be resolved in a fully developed transference neurosis. In the analysis of a four-and-a-half-year-old boy with transsexual symptoms, I was abstinent--not benevolent or supportive--and both positive and negative transference feelings

[The responsibility of medicine in adolescence].

Adolescence is a not very well defined time period between childhood and the adult age. The self esteem of an adolescent is neither that one of a child nor that one of an adult. If somatic, psychologic or psychosomatic complications or problems occur within this period, most of the adolescents disagree to be treated by a pediatrician, but they also disagree to be treated by "doctors for the elderly". Most of the complications or problems are specific for that age period; they are not well known to all medical doctors. Because of these reasons, specialists in adolescent medicine are mandatory f

Understanding childhood sexualities.

Contemporary concern over paedophilia and child sexual abuse usually rests upon uncritical and under-theorized conceptions of childhood sexualities. This article examines some of these assumptions and then outlines the social 'constructionist' alternative. Focusing upon the processes by which a child comes to script its sexual world, a number of central dimensions are posed: the scripting of absences, of values, of secrecy, of utility, of gender and of generation. By analyzing the complexity of childhood sexualities, the implications for cross-generational sexuality may be clarified.

Childhood sexual histories of women with somatization disorder.

The author interviewed 60 women with somatization disorder and 31 women with primary affective disorders who were matched for race, age at interview, and level of education to obtain their childhood sexual development histories. The two groups of women reported similar sexual experiences at similar ages, except that significantly more women with somatization disorder had been molested as children.

[Inhibitions or neurosis and masculine characteristics in women. Contributions to analysis of denial].

The first part of this paper describes the general qualities of the psychical apparatus in two groups of women, male character and inhibition or neurosis. A different attitude towards the realization of the sexual difference in the phallic phase originates these two groups. The girl with a male character identifies herself with the little boy and maintains an autoerotic attitude. In the case of inhibition or neurosis the girl undervaluates herself and renounces her pleasure in masturbation. In the second part we develop a pattern of analysis, the theory of the places within the psychical appar

The Sexual Differentiation of the Human Brain: Role of Sex Hormones Versus Sex Chromosomes.

Men and women differ, not only in their anatomy but also in their behavior. Research using animal models has convincingly shown that sex differences in the brain and behavior are induced by sex hormones during a specific, hormone-sensitive period during early development. Thus, male-typical psychosexual characteristics seem to develop under the influence of testosterone, mostly acting during early development. By contrast, female-typical psychosexual characteristics may actually be organized under the influence of estradiol during a specific prepubertal period. The sexual differentiation of th

Parent expectations and comfort with discussion of normal childhood sexuality and sexual abuse prevention during office visits.

BACKGROUND: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that pediatricians provide anticipatory guidance about sexual development and sexual abuse prevention. OBJECTIVE: To examine parents' expectations, comfort level, and experience discussing sexual development and sexual abuse prevention with pediatricians. METHODS: A consecutive sample of parents presenting for care at 9 pediatric offices completed a self-administered survey. The survey included demographic information and questions related to parents' expectations, past experience, and comfort discussing normal childhood sexuality and

Puberty, sexual development and eating disorders in adolescent outpatients.

This study examined puberty and psychosexual state in a clinical sample of adolescents attending for assessment because of eating disorders (ED). A total of 57 adolescents (girls) aged 14-21 years (mean age 16.9 years) having either anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) were studied by semi-structured interviews and structured self-report questionnaires considering the timing of menarche, dating and attitudes to sexuality. The age at menarche did not differ statistically significantly between AN and BN. It was significantly lower in the BN group than in the normal population, but no st

Psychosocial differences between Dutch male and female transsexuals.

One-hundred sixty-eight male and 55 female transsexuals, in hormonal treatment at the Gender Foundation in Amsterdam, were compared with respect to psychosocial characteristics. Results indicated that females more frequently had displayed cross-gender behavior during childhood than males, that they cross-dressed more often, and that, contrary to males, none had married in her anatomical sex. Females also applied for surgical gender reassignment at an earlier age than did males. More of the females lived in a stable relationship with a partner of their own biological sex. Relations with the par

A social episode model of human sexual behavior.

A social episode model of sexual behavior is proposed with emphasis placed on arousal as a crucial variable. This model argues against a disease or deficiency concept of homosexuality. However, the authors also hold that it may be coercive to push clients to accept their homosexuality, and that a therapist should adequately respond to a valid sexual orientation request. The social-sexual episode is divided into two relatively independent stages, preparatory and consummatory. A mathematical analysis is included, and the model is related to Freeman and Meyer (1975) wherein changes in sexual pref

Sexual and Romantic Relationships in Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Preliminary Report of an Italian Psychosexual Training Program.

The existing literature highlights the importance of psychosexual education for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We developed a group training program on sexuality and affectivity, specifically designed for adolescents with ASD, with the aim of investigating changes in psychosexual functioning after the intervention and evaluating its clinical utility. The program, consisting of 10 sessions and conducted by two expert clinicians, was administered to three small groups (maximum six participants per group), for a total of 17 adolescents (aged 12-18) diagnosed with ASD without int

Primary femininity.

In Freud's theory of the origins of femininity in females, there is a stage unaccounted for in the chronology of the little girl's development: the first many months of life are not considered. We know by now that castration anxiety, penis envy, and the traumas and frustrations of oedipal conflict are easy to demonstrate; but if the first stage in female development is different from Freud's description-if a fundamental, fixed sense of being rightfully a female is established in earliest childhood-then our psychology of women needs repair. The factors that make up this stage, with examples, ar
