Psychosocial Functioning of Children with and without Dyslexia: A Follow-up Study from Ages Four to Nine.

This longitudinal study compares developmental changes in psychosocial functioning during the transition into school of children with and without dyslexia. In addition, it examines the effects of gender and family risk for dyslexia in terms of the associations between dyslexia and psychosocial functioning. Children's psychosocial functioning (social skills, inattention and externalizing and internalizing problems) was evaluated by their parents at ages 4, 6 and 9, and diagnosis for dyslexia was made at age 8 (in grade 2). The findings indicated that children with dyslexia were already rated as…

Psychosocial functioning of children with AIDS and HIV infection: review of the literature from a socioecological framework.

Despite the development of highly effective treatments for the disease, pediatric human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection continues to affect a substantial number of families both in the United States and worldwide. This article reviews the psychosocial functioning of children with HIV, taking a socioecological perspective to organize the literature. When compared to children from similar socioeconomic situations, children with HIV demonstrate a range of possible outcomes. However, beyond the direct effects on children's neurocognitive and psychological functioning, HIV infection may disr…

Mental health, psychosocial functioning, and quality of life in patients with bladder exstrophy and epispadias - an overview.

Although there has been only limited clinical research on mental or psychosocial implications in patients with bladder exstrophy and epispadias, questions have been raised as to whether their life is of such questionable quality that a termination of pregnancy should be considered. A systematic overview of outcome studies published over the past three decades was carried out. In all, 1208 abstracts and 52 papers were read; only 10 (0.8%) papers focused on the mental or psychosocial outcome, but with diverse findings. However, most of the studies suffered from serious methodological deficiencie

Bowel function, mental health, and psychosocial function in adolescents with Hirschsprung's disease.

Congenital intestinal malformations are uncommon and may pose lasting somatic difficulties. Patients with anorectal anomalies have a high frequency of persistent faecal dysfunction and psychosocial problems. This study examined whether adolescents with Hirschsprung's disease have more psychosocial problems than their healthy peers. Nineteen adolescents (mean age 15.7 years) with Hirschsprung's disease were assessed for bowel function, anorectal physiology, mental health, and psychosocial functioning by physical examinations, semistructured interview, and standardised questionnaires. The adoles…

Exploring the treatment process correlates of the Spectra: Indices of Psychopathology's Psychosocial Functioning scale in a clinical sample.

Assessing adaptive psychosocial functioning is vital in psychological evaluation and treatment. The Psychosocial Functioning (PF) scale from the Spectra: Indices of Psychopathology captures key areas such as well-being, agency, social support, and access to basic needs. While initial research supports its use, its role in guiding complex treatment decisions remains underexplored. This study examined associations between the PF scale and treatment indicators from the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) in a mixed sample (N = 89) of psychiatric inpatients and outpatients. Findings revealed me…

Disability self-worth and personal meaning relate to psychosocial functioning among employed U.S. adults with LD and ADHD.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Personal disability identity (PDI) refers to disability self-concept and includes various attitudes toward disability. In this study, we examined whether the PDI attitudes of disability self-worth and personal meaning were predictors of psychosocial functioning. METHOD/DESIGN: Using hierarchical regression to control for sociodemographic and disability characteristics, we examined the unique contributions of these two PDI attitudes to life satisfaction, anxiety/depression, and general self-efficacy in a sample of 1,203 employed U.S. adults with LD and/or ADHD. RESULTS: PDI…

Impact of rapid genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 at time of breast cancer diagnosis on psychosocial functioning.

PURPOSE: Many women are being offered rapid genetic testing (RGT) for cancer predisposition genes, at the time of breast cancer diagnosis prior to surgery. The goal of this study was to determine if psychosocial functioning was affected in women receiving RGT for BRCA1 and BRCA2 at the time of breast cancer diagnosis. METHODS: Participants were women with invasive breast cancer diagnosed between 2013 and 2018, at four centres in Toronto, Canada. Eligible women were referred into the study by their surgeon at the time of diagnosis. Participants received pre-test genetic counselling and were of…

Mental Health and Psychosocial Functioning Over the Lifespan of German Patients Undergoing Cardiac Catheterization for Coronary Artery Disease.

Background: Psychological problems are common in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and are associated with poor outcome. However, data on the prevalence of distinct mental disorders and their relevance to patients' functioning in daily life are scarce. Method: In this retrospective study, a total of 514 German patients with CAD as diagnosed by cardiac catheterization were assessed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview 5.0.0 (M.I.N.I.) and psychosocial functioning was evaluated using the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale. Results: Twenty-nine percent of th…

The influence of levetiracetam on psychosocial and behavioral functioning in children: A case-control and follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Levetiracetam, a widely used antiepileptic drug in children, has been associated with psychosocial and behavioral problems, which are also influenced by epilepsy variables, including duration or seizure frequency. PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to investigate the frequency and timing of treatment-emergent psychosocial and behavioral problems in children receiving levetiracetam, irrespective of seizure variables which are possible confounders. METHODS: A prospective, case-control study with a 3-month follow-up was conducted. Consecutive children aged 6 to 16years with new

Who seeks bariatric surgery? Psychosocial functioning among adolescent candidates, other treatment-seeking adolescents with obesity and healthy controls.

Limited data are available on the characteristics of adolescents with obesity who seek bariatric surgery. Existing data suggest that adolescent surgery candidates have a higher body mass index (BMI) than comparison adolescents with obesity, but the limited findings regarding psychosocial functioning are mixed. This study aimed to compare BMI and psychosocial functioning among adolescent bariatric surgery candidates, outpatient medical-treatment-seeking adolescents with obesity (receiving lifestyle modification), and adolescents in the normal-weight range. All adolescents completed self-report …

The impact of the developmental timing of trauma exposure on PTSD symptoms and psychosocial functioning among older adults.

The present study examined the impact of the developmental timing of trauma exposure on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and psychosocial functioning in a large sample of community-dwelling older adults (N = 1,995). Specifically, we investigated whether the negative consequences of exposure to traumatic events were greater for traumas experienced during childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, midlife, or older adulthood. Each of these developmental periods is characterized by age-related changes in cognitive and social processes that may influence psychological adjustment followi…

History of sexual and physical abuse in women with dyspareunia: association with pain, psychosocial adjustment, and sexual functioning.

AIM: Dyspareunia is a women's sexual health problem that still often goes undiagnosed despite its high prevalence and its detrimental impact on sexual, relationship, and psychological adjustment. Although sexual and physical abuse may constitute risk factors for the development of dyspareunia, the effects of past abuse on current pain and associated sexual and psychosocial impairments have never been examined. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine the relation between a history of sexual and physical abuse and a series of pain, psychological, dyadic, and sexual functioning variables in a
