Systematic review and meta-analysis on perioperative intervention to prevent postoperative atelectasis complications after thoracic surgery.

BACKGROUND: In clinical general thoracic surgery, the prevalence of atelectasis is relatively high. Perioperative interventions can affect the probability of patients with atelectasis after surgery. Therefore, the incidence of perioperative intervention to prevent atelectasis after thoracic surgery was discussed using meta-analysis in this study. METHODS: The articles were searched in the English database PubMed and Chinese databases including China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP, and China Journal Full-text Database (CJFD). The duration for publication time of the articles was

[Swyer-James syndrome with bronchial asthma and recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax].

An 18-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for treatment of the fifth episode of spontaneous pneumothorax. She had a history of repeated pneumonia in childhood and mycoplasma pneumonia at 12 years of age. A chest X-ray film revealed a left-sided pneumothorax, atelectasis of the left upper lobe, and hyperlucency of the left lung. A bronchogram showed poor filling of the peripheral bronchi by contrast medium and mild cylindrical bronchiectasis in the proximal bronchi. Pulmonary arteriography showed small left pulmonary arteries. From these findings, Swyer-James syndrome was diagnosed. Thi

Intercostal nerve transfer in infants with obstetric brachial plexus palsy.

The use of intercostal nerve (ICN) transfer to repair brachial plexus lesions associated with root avulsions is a well known procedure in adults. However, there is a paucity of reports on the use of ICN in infants with obstetrical brachial plexus palsy (OBPP). This study included 46 infants with obstetric brachial plexus palsy who underwent 62 neurotization procedures. Clinically, 2 cases had upper trunk injury, 19 had upper-middle trunk injury, 3 had lower trunk injury, and 22 had total palsy. The average age at surgery was 14 months. Twelve patients underwent surgery younger than 6 months of

Reexpansion pulmonary edema.

Unilateral reexpansion pulmonary edema (RPE) is a rare complication of the treatment of lung collapse secondary to pneumothorax, pleural effusion, or atelectasis. Although RPE generally is believed to occur only when a chronically collapsed lung is rapidly reexpanded by evacuation of large amounts of air or fluid, in this review 15 of 47 cases of RPE available for assessment occurred when the pulmonary collapse was of short duration or when the lung was reexpanded without suction. The pathogenesis of RPE is unknown and is probably multifactorial. Implicated in the etiological process of RPE ar

Effects of alveolar hypoxia on pulmonary capillary beds.

Using open chested dogs (n = 12), we tested the hypothesis that the pulmonary capillary changes its caliber in response to alveolar hypoxia. Animals were placed in a left upright lateral position. Pulmonary perfusion was measured by electromagnetic flow transducers attached to the main and left pulmonary arteries. Systemic artery, pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein pressures were measured via catheters inserted into them. Shunt flow through the pulmonary capillary beds was evaluated by the microsphere method, injecting a mixture of three different size (3, 9 and 15 microm) radioactive microsp

Diagnostic Dilemma of Rounded Atelectasis in the Left Lower Lobe Showing High Uptake of 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose: A Surgical Conundrum.

Differentiating rounded atelectasis from lung cancer can be challenging. Rounded atelectasis has a low-to-moderate maximum standardized uptake value of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG); however, some cases show high uptake, meaning that radiology-based diagnoses may not always be accurate. Herein, we report a rare surgical case of a patient with rounded atelectasis exhibiting considerable 18F-FDG uptake. A 55-year-old man with a 37-pack-year smoking history was referred to our hospital for further investigation of an abnormal shadow in the left lower lung field. Chest computed tomography (CT)

Effect of high-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy on the postoperative atelectasis in interventional sclerotherapy: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Children undergoing interventional treatment for vascular malformations (VMs) can easily develop perioperative atelectasis. High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy shows the potential to reduce perioperative atelectasis. The aim of our study was to explore the potential efficacy of HFNC oxygen therapy for reducing the incidence of perioperative atelectasis in Pediatric interventional treatment for vascular malformations. METHODS: This study was a prospective randomized controlled trial with patient-blinded structure. A total of 81 pediatric patients scheduled for interventiona

Delayed targeted atelectasis in a case of bronchoscopic lung volume reduction with endobronchial valves.

A woman in her late 60s with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema underwent bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) with endobronchial valves (EBV) to address hyperinflation. The initial EBV placement has led to partial lobar atelectasis of the left lower lobe and resulted in significant improvement in the patient's symptoms and lung function. However, valve migration occurred later due to pneumothorax unrelated to valves, leading to suboptimal clinical improvement. The patient achieved delayed full lobar atelectasis 21 months after EBV placement, which led to a

Tumour-like presentation of pulmonary sarcoidosis.

We report a case of pulmonary sarcoidosis, which initially presented as a left apical infiltrate. The later course mimicked a pulmonary neoplasm, with left upper lobe atelectasis secondary to bronchial stenosis, resulting from both endobronchial sarcoidosis and extrinsic compression by enlarged lymph nodes. Extrinsic pressure from sarcoid nodes on the left main pulmonary artery and recurrent laryngeal nerve, also caused a reduction in pulmonary parenchymal perfusion and left vocal cord paresis.

Deep Neuromuscular Blockade in Laparoscopic One-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB): A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Optimal visibility during Laparoscopic One-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB) is challenging. This study compares moderate and deep neuromuscular blockade (NMB) for surgical field quality, respiratory and hemodynamic outcomes, atelectasis rates, pain, and bowel recovery. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial involved adults with severe obesity (ASA II/III) undergoing OAGB with general anesthesia. Patients were assigned to deep or moderate NMB, monitored by acceleromyography. Surgical workspace quality was measured using the Leiden Surgical Rating Scale. Collected intraoperati
