North American efficacy and safety of a novel pediculicide rinse, isopropyl myristate 50% (Resultz).

BACKGROUND: Head lice infestations are a major nuisance in school-aged children and are a worldwide public health problem. There are growing concerns about the effectiveness of current treatments owing to increasing resistance, safety, and patient noncompliance. A safe, easy to use, effective alternative is needed. OBJECTIVE: A pediculicide rinse, 50% isopropyl myristate (IPM), was assessed in two phase 2 trials conducted in North America. The first trial was a nonrandomized (proof of concept) trial without a comparator conducted in Winnipeg, Canada. The second trial, conducted in the United

The efficacy of Australian essential oils for the treatment of head lice infestation in children: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The increase in resistance of head lice to neurotoxic pediculicides and public concern over their safety has led to an increase in alternative treatments, many of which are poorly researched or even untested. METHODS: A multicentre, randomised, assessor-blind, parallel-group trial (Trial 1) was conducted to compare the safety and efficacy of a head lice treatment containing Australian eucalyptus oil and Leptospermum petersonii (EO/LP solution; applied thrice with 7-day intervals between applications) with a neurotoxic treatment containing pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide (P/PB mo…

Increase in insecticide susceptibility after sublethal exposure to deltamethrin in the German cockroach (Blattodea: Ectobiidae).

The German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), is a major urban insect pest primarily controlled by insecticides, including pyrethroid sprays, fipronil baits, and indoxacarb baits. However, widespread pyrethroid resistance increases the probability that cockroaches will survive treatments in the field. Many insecticides are applied concurrently or repetitively on a periodic basis, meaning survivors have the chance to be re-treated, but any lasting physiological effects from initial survival may impact the performance of subsequent treatments. We investigated the effects of sublethal deltameth

Distribution of pyrethroid insecticides in urban storm drain structures: Catch basins, open channels, and outfalls.

Surface water runoff can transport contaminants offsite to downstream aquatic ecosystems. The prevalence of impervious surfaces in urban areas enhances surface runoff and contributes to contamination of urban surface streams. Urban areas have complex drainage systems for the conveyance of drainage water, however, there is a dearth of information on the distribution of contaminants within storm drain system structures. Pyrethroid insecticides are among the most used insecticides in urban areas, and trace levels of pyrethroids are known to exert toxicity to aquatic invertebrates. To investigate

Impact of a small-scale tsetse fly control operation with deltamethrin impregnated "Tiny Targets" on tsetse density and trypanosomes' circulation in the Campo sleeping sickness focus of South Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Significant progress has been made towards African sleeping sickness elimination in the last decade. Indeed, the World Health Organization (WHO) global goal of eliminating the chronic form of the disease as a public health problem was achieved in 2020 (i.e., < 2,000 new cases per year). Vector control has played an important role in achieving this goal. In this study, we evaluated the impact of the insecticide impregnated Tiny Targets on tsetse fly densities and their infection rates with Trypanosoma spp in the Campo sleeping sickness focus of South Cameroon. METHODS: The study si

Evaluation of the efficacy of permethrin- and cypermethrin-based textile against taiga tick, Ixodes persulcatus.

A comparison of the efficacy of permethrin- and cypermethrin-based textile against taiga ticks (Ixodes persulcatus) was carried out in a tick-borne viral encephalitis hotspot in the Irkutsk Region (Russia) using model samples of impregnated textiles. We demonstrated that permethrin- and cypermethrin-treated model samples have similar protective parameters in terms of maximum height reached by the tick when climbing up the treated textile (20.9-38.7 cm for cypermethrin, 27.6-39.3 cm for permethrin, depending on concentration) and knockdown time (i.e., the time until a female tick falls off the

Geographical patterns and mechanisms of Cimex lectularius Linnaeus, 1758, and Cimex hemipterus Fabricius, 1803 (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) resistance to insecticides: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

This study aimed to review published scientific literature on bed bugs in countries where insecticide resistance has been reported worldwide from 2000 to 2021. Electronic databases, including Scopus, PubMed, and WOS, were searched. Out of 606 articles found in the initial search, we selected 57 articles, of which 40 articles had reported on Cimex lectularius (C. lectularius), and 22 papers had reported on Cimex hemipterus (C. hemipterus). Most studies on insecticide resistance were carried out on C. lectularius in North America (14, 35%) and C. hemipterus in Asia (16, 72.7%). The most common m

Evaluating wipe sampling parameters to assess method performance and data confidence during remediation of hazardous pesticide misuse chemicals on indoor materials.

Pesticide misuse incidents are reported worldwide each year. The potential exposure to pesticides creates a concern for occupants in affected homes, apartments, and other occupied buildings. Pesticides that are improperly applied within these locations may require remediation prior to reoccupation. Incident response personnel rely heavily on data from sampling results to identify residue levels and determine when site remediation is complete. Surface wipe samples are often collected for this purpose. Therefore, it is important to ensure sampling and analysis procedures are well established for

Evaluation of deltamethrin-loaded Zn-Fe, Zn-Al-GA layered double hydroxide, and Fe-O nanoparticles against resistant Rhipicephalus annulatus ticks.

The over use of deltamethrin has resulted in the development of resistance. Thus, the search for a new method to improve its acaricidal effect is the target of the present study. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) compounds are now used as drug delivery systems. Deltamethrin (Butox®) was loaded on Zn-Fe LDH, Zn-Al-GA layered double hydroxide (LDH), and Fe-oxide nanoparticles NPs. Then its acaricidal efficacy was evaluated. The nanocomposites (NCs) were prepared by the co-precipitation method and characterized before and after deltamethrin loading. The deltamethrin-loaded NCs were applied against t

Acute toxicity and teratogenicity of carbaryl (carbamates), tebufenpyrad (pyrazoles), cypermethrin and permethrin (pyrethroids) on the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L, 1758) early life stages.

The toxicity of carbaryl, tebufenpyrad, cypermethrin and permethrin was evaluated in European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax during the embryonic and larval development using six different concentrations per chemical. The order of the toxicity effectiveness was carbaryl > tebufenpyrad > cypermethrin > permethrin. The larvae were more sensitive to all tested chemicals than embryos. The LC50 of carbaryl, tebufenpyrad, cypermethrin and permethrin was determined as 13.88, 43.96, 92 and 142 ppm and 9.27, 25.67, 48.4 and 72.7 ppm in embryo and larvae, respectively. Furthermore, the tested pesticides

Surface distribution of pyrethroids following topical application to veterinary species: Implications for lateral transport.

Pyrethroids like permethrin have been used as topical formulations for their ectoparasiticidal effects since the 1970s. There are numerous efficacy studies in dogs and livestock animals that indicate a fast spread of pyrethroids after topical administration onto rather confined areas of the skin. Some studies correlate the efficacy against ticks, fleas or lice with concentrations of pyrethroids in hair and, less frequently, stratum corneum samples. It is often stated that lateral transport is responsible for the distribution of the pyrethroids over the body surface. With this review, we attemp

Skin necrosis caused by prallethrin-A worldwide used insecticide.

We report a case of necrosis caused by the use of prallethrin (mosquito repellent) on the skin in a 67-year-old diabetic female patient suffering from delusions of parasitosis. Cutaneous toxicity due to pyrethroids is less known or reported, despite well-documented pyrethroid poisoning involving the gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiac, and nervous systems. Skin irritation has been described after acute accidental exposure but, as far as we know, no data have been published on the effects of pyrethroids when applied directly to the skin.

Mammal toxicology of synthetic pyrethroids.

Pyrethroids show moderate acute oral toxicity in rodents, and their typical toxicological signs are tremors (T syndrome) for Type I (generally non-cyano pyrethroids) and choreoathetosis with salivation (CS syndrome) for Type II (generally α-cyano pyrethroids). However, some pyrethroids show mixed clinical signs. Mainly Type II pyrethroids cause paresthesia, which is characterized by transient burning/tingling/itching sensation of the exposed skin. Also, it has been suggested that some pyrethroids cause developmental neurotoxicity, but available evidence has been judged to be insufficient. Whil

Abiotic enantiomerization of permethrin and cypermethrin: effects of organic solvents.

All synthetic pyrethroids are chiral compounds, and isomerization has been frequently observed from exposure to certain solvents. However, so far, pyrethroid isomerization caused by solvents has not been characterized at the enantiomer level. In this study, we evaluated the occurrence of enantiomerization of two commonly used pyrethroids, permethrin and cypermethrin, in various organic solvents and solvent-water systems. The four stereoisomers of permethrin were stable under all test conditions. Rapid enantiomerization of cypermethrin was observed in isopropanol and methanol but not in n-hexan

Effects of permethrin-treated screens on phlebotomine sand flies, with reference to Phlebotomus martini (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Effects of permethrin-treated screens on the sand fly, Phlebotomus martini Parrot, a vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Kenya, were evaluated after the eighth treatment. Screens treated with 0.50 g/m2 of permethrin 20% emulsifiable concentrate were fitted inside houses and re-treated every 6 mo from August 1989 to December 1993. Before application of the treated screens, a geometric mean of 0.83 P. martini were collected per trap night inside houses, whereas after the eighth treatment only 0.05 sand flies were caught. P. martini abundance was reduced by 88.8%. Analysis of the effects of treat
