New methodology for obtaining CdTe quantum dots by using ultrasound.

Luminescent CdTe quantum dots (Qdots) have been produced at few minutes by using a new, simple and fast methodology in an aqueous medium by using ultrasound irradiation to accelerate the process of tellurium reduction. The structural and optical properties were characterized by TEM, XRD, absorption and fluorescence spectrocopy. The produced Qdots are in a strong quantum confinement regime and have only one fluorescence band. Moreover, the nanoparticles seem to be monodispersed, which is in accordance with the fluorescence results. We have developed a simple route for preparing monodispersed Cd…

Light-controlled bioelectrochemical sensor based on CdSe/ZnS quantum dots.

This study reports on the oxygen sensitivity of quantum dot electrodes modified with CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals. The photocurrent behavior is analyzed for dependence on pH and applied potential by potentiostatic and potentiodynamic measurements. On the basis of the influence of the oxygen content in solution on the photocurrent generation, the enzymatic activity of glucose oxidase is evaluated in solution. In order to construct a photobioelectrochemical sensor which can be read out by illuminating the respective electrode area, two different immobilization methods for the fixation of the biocatalys

The interactions of glutathione-capped CdTe quantum dots with trypsin.

Due to their unique fluorescent properties, quantum dots present a great potential for biolabelling applications; however, the toxic interactions of quantum dots with biopolymers are little known. The toxic interactions of glutathione-capped CdTe quantum dots with trypsin were studied in this paper using synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy, fluorescence emission spectra, and UV-vis absorption spectra. The interaction between CdTe quantum dots and trypsin resulted in structure changes of trypsin and inhibited trypsin's activity. Fluorescence emission spectra revealed that the quenching mechan…

Radioiodination and biodistribution of quantum dots using Bolton-Hunter reagent.

In this study, the radioiodination and biodistribution of quantum dots (QDs) using Bolton-Hunter reagent were investigated. Radioiodination yield was 33.4 ± 2.0%. Fluorescent intensity of radioiodinated QDs decreased to 75.4% of the maximum prior to radioiodination. In biodistribution and ex vivo fluorescence imaging, radioiodinated QDs were highly accumulated in reticuloendothelial system (liver and spleen) and had low level bone uptakes and slow clearance from body. These results suggest that the radioiodination method of nanoparticles using Bolton-Hunter reagent could be easily used in the …

Cytotoxic effect of CdSe quantum dots on mouse embryonic development.

AIM: The aim of this study was to examine the cytotoxic effect of quantum dots (QD), a novel luminescent material, on early post-implantation embryonic development. METHODS: Mouse blastocysts were incubated in medium with or without CdSe-core QD (250 or 500 nmol/L) for 24 h. Cell apoptosis was analyzed by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated digoxigenin-dUTP nick-end labeling assay and Annexin V/propidium iodide staining, and proliferation was investigated by dual differential staining. Pre-implantation and post-implantation development was assessed by in vitro and in vivo analyses,…

Electrochemiluminescence of CdSe quantum dots for immunosensing of human prealbumin.

We describe a non-labeled electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor based on CdSe quantum dots (QDs) for the detection of human prealbumin (PAB, antigen). The immunosensor was fabricated by layer by layer coupled with nanoparticle-amplification techniques. After two gold nanoparticle layers were self-assembled onto the gold electrode surface through cysteamine, anti-PAB (antibody) were conjugated with -COOH groups of both the CdSe QDs and cysteine, which were linked to the gold nanoparticle-modified electrode. The principle of ECL detection was that the immunocomplex inhibited the ECL reacti…

Self-surface passivation of CdX (X = Se, Te) quantum dots.

A small portion of a reaction mixture including unpurified CdX (X = Se or Te) quantum dots (QDs), in which unreacted Cd and Se ions were left together with coordinating solvents, was dropped into an organic solvent. The CdX QDs in this organic solution showed enhancement of photoluminescence (PL) efficiency, growth of particles, and focusing of size distribution for more than 10 h at room temperature (RT, -23 degrees C). These effects were attributed to passivation of QDs' surface by Cd and X ions present in the solution. No external energy source was used for these achievements; therefore, th…

Monolayer behavior and Langmuir-Blodgett manipulation of CdS quantum dots.

Cadmium sulfide (CdS) quantum dots (QDs) were prepared and surface modified by dodecanthiol or mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) to render a surface with alkyl chains (C(12)-CdS) or carboxylic acid groups (MSA-CdS), respectively. Due to the hydrophobic property of C(12)-CdS, the nanoparticles disperse well in chloroform and stay stable at the air/water interface. However, 3-dimensional (3D) aggregative domains and particle-free pores were formed in the monolayer due to poor particle-water interaction. For the MSA-CdS nanoparticles, the surface was hydrophobized through physical adsorption of a catio…

The interactions between CdSe quantum dots and yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae: adhesion of quantum dots to the cell surface and the protection effect of ZnS shell.

The interactions between quantum dots (QDs) and biological systems have attracted increasing attention due to concerns on possible toxicity of the nanoscale materials. The biological effects of CdSe QDs and CdSe/ZnS QDs with nearly identical hydrodynamic size on Saccharomyces cerevisiae were investigated via microcalorimetric, spectroscopic and microscopic methods, demonstrating a toxic order CdSe>CdSe/ZnS QDs. CdSe QDs damaged yeast cell wall and reduced the mitochondrial membrane potential. Noteworthy, adhesion of QDs to the yeast cell surface renders this work a good example of interaction …

Aqueous-phase linker-assisted attachment of cysteinate(2-)-capped cdse quantum dots to TiO2 for quantum dot-sensitized solar cells.

We have synthesized water-dispersible cysteinate(2-)-capped CdSe nanocrystals and attached them to TiO2 using one-step linker-assisted assembly. Room-temperature syntheses yielded CdSe magic-sized clusters (MSCs) exhibiting a narrow and intense first excitonic absorption band centered at 422 nm. Syntheses at 80 °C yielded regular CdSe quantum dots (RQDs) with broader and red-shifted first excitonic absorption bands. Cysteinate(2-)-capped CdSe MSCs and RQDs adsorbed to bare nanocrystalline TiO2 films from aqueous dispersions. CdSe-functionalized TiO2 films were incorporated into working electro…

Mid-infrared InAs/InP quantum-dot lasers.

Mid-infrared semiconductor lasers operating in the 2.0-5.0 μm spectral range play an important role for various applications, including trace-gas detection, biomedical analysis, and free-space optical communication. InP-based quantum-well (QW) and quantum-dash (Qdash) lasers are promising alternatives to conventional GaSb-based QW lasers because of their lower cost and mature fabrication infrastructure. However, they suffer from high threshold current density (Jth) and limited operation temperatures. InAs/InP quantum-dot (QD) lasers theoretically offer lower Jth owing to their three-dimensiona

Nanobioprospecting of photoautotrophs for the fabrication of quantum dots: mechanism and applications.

Quantum dots (QDs), also known as nanoparticle-based fluorescent probes, are luminescent semiconductor particles with a size range of 2-20 nm. The unique optical and electronic capabilities of QDs have led to expanded applications in several fields such as optoelectronics, transistors, sensors, photodetection, catalysis, and medicine. The distinct quantum effects of nanocrystals can be controlled by changing their sizes and shapes using a variety of top-down and bottom-up tactics. QDs were traditionally fabricated using complex, expensive, toxic, and aggressive chemical techniques, which limit…

Spin relaxation in a single-electron graphene quantum dot.

The relaxation time of a single-electron spin is an important parameter for solid-state spin qubits, as it directly limits the lifetime of the encoded information. Thanks to the low spin-orbit interaction and low hyperfine coupling, graphene and bilayer graphene (BLG) have long been considered promising platforms for spin qubits. Only recently, it has become possible to control single-electrons in BLG quantum dots (QDs) and to understand their spin-valley texture, while the relaxation dynamics have remained mostly unexplored. Here, we report spin relaxation times (T1) of single-electron states…

Dextran-Functionalized Quantum Dot Immunoconjugates for Cellular Imaging.

Brightly luminescent semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are ideal materials for cellular imaging and analysis because of their advantageous optical properties and surface area that supports multivalent conjugation of biomolecules. An important design consideration for effective use of these materials is a hydrophilic, biocompatible surface chemistry that provides colloidal stability and minimizes nonspecific interactions with biological molecules and systems. Dextran coatings are able to satisfy these criteria. Despite frequent use of dextran coatings with other nanomaterials (e.g., iron oxide n…

Quantum Dot Nanobeacons for Single RNA Labeling and Imaging.

Detection and imaging RNAs in live cells is in high demand. Methodology for such a purpose is still a challenge, particularly for single RNA detection and imaging in live cells. In this study, a type of quantum dot (QD) nanobeacon with controllable valencies was constructed by precisely conjugating the black hole quencher (BHQ1) and phosphorothioate comodified DNA onto CdTe:Zn2+ QDs via a one-pot hydrothermal method. The nanobeacon with only one conjugated DNA was used to label and detect low-abundance nucleic acids in live cells, and single HIV-1 RNAs were detected and imaged in live HIV-1 in

Cathodic Quantum Dot Facilitated Electrochemiluminescent Detection in Blood.

The expansion of electrochemical sensors to biomedical applications at point of care requires these sensors to undergo analysis without any pretreatment or extraction. This poses a major challenge for all electrochemical sensors including electrochemiluminescent (ECL)-based sensors. ECL offers many advantages for biomedical applications; however, obtaining results from complex matrixes has proven to be a large hurdle for the application of ECL sensors within this field. This work demonstrates the potential of cathodic ECL to detect and quantify homocysteine (Hcy) with a 0.1 nM limit of detecti
