Primary Prevention of Cancer: A Multilevel Approach to Behavioral Risk Factor Reduction in Racially and Ethnically Minoritized Groups.

Cancer continues to be the second most common cause of death in the United States. Racially and ethnically minoritized populations continue to experience disparities in cancer prevention compared with majority populations. Multilevel interventions-from policy, communities, health care institutions, clinical teams, families, and individuals-may be uniquely suited to reducing health disparities through behavioral risk factor modification in these populations. The aim of this article is to provide a brief overview of the evidence for primary prevention among racially and ethnically minoritized su

Chronic Kidney Disease as Risk Factor for Enlarged Perivascular Spaces in Patients With Stroke and Relation to Racial Group.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS) are considered subclinical markers of small vessel disease, associated with increased risk of stroke and dementia. Increasing evidence links chronic kidney disease (CKD) to small vessel disease. We explored the relationship between CKD and EPVS burden and the influence of racial group in this relation. METHODS: Consecutive patients with stroke who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging were included (n=894). Racial group was categorized as White, Black, or other (other racial groups). CKD was defined by glomerular filtration rate…

Psychosocial Distress in Patients With Advanced CKD by Racial Group and Immigrant Status: A Canadian Cross-sectional Study.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) have been reported to experience profound psychosocial distress. Other work has established that patients with CKD from marginalized populations (including individuals who on the basis of race often face racism and related discrimination, termed "racialization") experience health care inequities. Given limited information on the intersection of these 2 phenomena, we assessed the association of psychosocial distress with racialized status and immigrant status in Canadians with advanced CKD. STUDY DESIGN: Secondary analy

Virtual group visits to reduce psychosocial distress and racial disparities in pediatric vitiligo and alopecia areata patients.

We examined the potential for virtual, pediatric group visits to reduce racial disparities in psychosocial isolation and access to care among children of color with pediatric vitiligo and alopecia areata as well as their caregivers. We have conducted 10 visits with 30 pediatric skin of color patients between 5 and 16 years old: 18 patients with alopecia areata, 12 with vitiligo, 59% female, 64% Black, and 23% Latinx, and 33 parents. After the visits, children and parents felt they had more people they knew and could reach out to about their dermatologic condition, the visits exceeded both chil

Eligibility and Prognostic Performance of Smoking Duration-Based Versus Pack-Year-Based U.S. National Lung Cancer Screening Criteria Across Racial and Ethnic Groups.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force expanded lung cancer (LC) screening eligibility in 2021 (USPSTF-2021) by decreasing the minimum number of smoking pack-years from 30 to 20. Underrepresented minorities still experience disparities in screening eligibility. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate screening eligibility and prognostic performance of alternative smoking duration-based criteria versus USPSTF-2021 (primary outcome) and risk-based screening using the recalibrated Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial 2012 (PLCOm2012update) model (secondary outcome) across d

Development and Testing of the Comprehensive Prenatal Care Index: Relationship With Preterm Birth and Small for Gestational Age Across Racial and Ethnic Groups.

INTRODUCTION: Preterm birth and small for gestational age (SGA) are significant public health concerns in the United States, with pronounced disparities across racial and ethnic groups. Traditional prenatal care adequacy indices have limitations in fully capturing their multifaceted nature. Our study introduces the Comprehensive Prenatal Care Index (CPCI) to provide a more holistic assessment of prenatal care by integrating key elements of prenatal counseling and health promotion. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System 2016-2021 data. The CPCI

Associations of place characteristics with HIV and HCV risk behaviors among racial/ethnic groups of people who inject drugs in the United States.

PURPOSE: Investigate whether characteristics of geographic areas are associated with condomless sex and injection-related risk behavior among racial/ethnic groups of people who inject drugs (PWID) in the United States. METHODS: PWID were recruited from 19 metropolitan statistical areas for 2009 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance. Administrative data described ZIP codes, counties, and metropolitan statistical areas where PWID lived. Multilevel models, stratified by racial/ethnic groups, were used to assess relationships of place-based characteristics to condomless sex and injection-related r

Differential associations between Social Anxiety Disorder, family cohesion, and suicidality across racial/ethnic groups: Findings from the National Comorbidity Survey-Adolescent (NCS-A).

The proposed research seeks to introduce a novel model relating Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and suicide outcomes (i.e., passive suicidal ideation, active suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts) in diverse adolescents. This model posits that family cohesion is one pathway by which suicide risk is increased for socially anxious youth, and predicts that the relationships between these variables may be of different strength in Latino and White subgroups and across gender. Data from a sample of Latino (n=1922) and non-Hispanic White (hereafter referred to as White throughout) (n=5648) male and f

Prevalence and associated social determinants of health for pregestational and gestational diabetes mellitus in California by disaggregated racial and ethnic groups and subgroups.

OBJECTIVES: Pregestational diabetes (PDM) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have increased in the U.S., with persistent racial/ethnic disparities. We examined PDM and GDM prevalence and associated social determinants of health (SDOH) across disaggregated racial/ethnic subgroups in California. METHODS: We included 1,627,679 pregnant women with singleton births (2013-2022) from the California birth certificate database. We estimated age-standardized prevalence, annual percent change (APC), and prevalence ratios (PRs) for SDOH associated with PDM and GDM. RESULTS: From 2013 to 2022, PDM p

Variations in clinical features and disease burden of myasthenia gravis between racial and ethnic groups: A retrospective cohort study of two national databases.

Previous studies have reported that clinical characteristics and outcomes of myasthenia gravis (MG) vary across racial and ethnic groups. This study leverages two nationwide datasets, the MG Foundation of America Global MG Patient Registry (MGFAPR) and the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) to further examine these reports. We compared clinical characteristics, socioeconomic determinants, therapeutic regimens, and inpatient outcomes across racial/ethnic groups of MGFAPR enrollees between July 2013 and November 2024 that self-reported MG diagnosis by a physician and were US residents over the age

Comparison of long-term safety and efficacy outcomes after drug-eluting and bare-metal stent use across racial groups: Insights from NHLBI Dynamic Registry.

BACKGROUND: Long-term data on outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stent (DES) and bare-metal stent (BMS) across racial groups are limited, and minorities are under-represented in existing clinical trials. Whether DES has better long-term clinical outcomes compared to BMS across racial groups remains to be established. Accordingly, we assessed whether longer-term clinical outcomes are better with DES compared to BMS across racial groups. METHODS: Using the multicenter National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI)-sponsored Dynamic Registry, 2-year safe…

Parental incarceration and health risks in a population-based study of U.S. early adolescents: Results among racialized groups.

Parental incarceration is an adverse childhood experience that inequitably burdens families of color and affects millions of U.S. children and adolescents. Although racialized disparities in exposure to parental incarceration are often acknowledged, researchers have yet to examine whether manifestations of racism may affect the link between parental incarceration and youth outcomes. This study provides a first look at how parental incarceration relates to health vulnerabilities in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, an ongoing, population-based study of U.S. children born
