Sagittal balance correction of idiopathic scoliosis using the in situ contouring technique.

PURPOSE: Idiopathic scoliosis can lead to sagittal imbalance. The relationship between thoracic hyper- and hypo-kyphotic segments, vertebral rotation and coronal curve was determined. The effect of segmental sagittal correction by in situ contouring was analyzed. METHODS: Pre- and post-operative radiographs of 54 scoliosis patients (Lenke 1 and 3) were analyzed at 8 years follow-up. Cobb angles and vertebral rotation were determined. Sagittal measurements were: kyphosis T4-T12, T4-T8 and T9-T12, lordosis L1-S1, T12-L2 and L3-S1, pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt, sacral slope, T1 and T9 tilt. RE

Dependency of image quality on acquisition protocol and image processing in chest tomosynthesis-a visual grading study based on clinical data.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the quality of images obtained with two different protocols with different acquisition time and the influence from image post processing in a chest digital tomosynthesis (DTS) system. METHODS: 20 patients with suspected lung cancer were imaged with a chest X-ray equipment with tomosynthesis option. Two examination protocols with different acquisition times (6.3 and 12 s) were performed on each patient. Both protocols were presented with two different image post-processing (standard DTS processing and more advanced processing optimised for chest radiography). Thus, 4 seri

Snakules: a model-based active contour algorithm for the annotation of spicules on mammography.

We have developed a novel, model-based active contour algorithm, termed "snakules", for the annotation of spicules on mammography. At each suspect spiculated mass location that has been identified by either a radiologist or a computer-aided detection (CADe) algorithm, we deploy snakules that are converging open-ended active contours also known as snakes. The set of convergent snakules have the ability to deform, grow and adapt to the true spicules in the image, by an attractive process of curve evolution and motion that optimizes the local matching energy. Starting from a natural set of automa

VLD-Net: Localization and Detection of the Vertebrae From X-Ray Images by Reinforcement Learning With Adaptive Exploration Mechanism and Spine Anatomy Information.

Accurate and efficient vertebrae localization and detection in X-ray images are essential for diagnosing and treating spinal diseases. However, most existing methods struggle with the complexity of spine X-ray images, yielding inaccurate results due to insufficient utilization of spinal anatomy information and neglect of individual vertebra characteristics. In this paper, we propose an innovative Vertebrae Localization and Detection Network (VLD-Net) to accurately assist physicians in diagnosing spine-related diseases from X-ray images. Our VLD-Net, for the first time, defines vertebrae locali

Full-field breast tomosynthesis.

Breast tomosynthesis is a 3-dimensional (3-D) imaging technology that involves acquiring images of a stationary compressed breast at multiple angles during a short scan. The individual images are then reconstructed into a series of thin high-resolution slices that displayed individually or in a dynamic ciné mode. Tomosynthesis can reduce or eliminate the tissue overlap effect. While holding the breast stationary, images are acquired at a nsumber of different x-ray source angles. Objects at different heights in the breast project differently for each angle. The final step in the tomosynthesis p

Comparison between two packages for pectoral muscle removal on mammographic images.

BACKGROUND: Pectoral muscle removal is a fundamental preliminary step in computer-aided diagnosis systems for full-field digital mammography (FFDM). Currently, two open-source publicly available packages (LIBRA and OpenBreast) provide algorithms for pectoral muscle removal within Matlab environment. PURPOSE: To compare performance of the two packages on a single database of FFDM images. METHODS: Only mediolateral oblique (MLO) FFDM was considered because of large presence of pectoral muscle on this type of projection. For obtaining ground truth, pectoral muscle has been manually segmented by

Automated selection of regions of interest for quantitative analysis of lung textures in digital chest radiographs.

In order to implement a computerized scheme for quantitative analysis of interstitial lung disease in chest radiographs in clinical situations, a fully automated method of selecting many square regions of interest (ROIs) in peripheral lung areas are developed. First, the peripheral lung regions are identified, based on the automated detection of lung apices, ribcage edges, and diaphragm. Then a large number of ROIs are selected sequentially by filling in the identified peripheral regions. Finally, those ROIs containing sharp edges are removed based on an edge gradient analysis, for which a gra

Lung nodule and cancer detection in computed tomography screening.

Fundamental to the diagnosis of lung cancer in computed tomography (CT) scans is the detection and interpretation of lung nodules. As the capabilities of CT scanners have advanced, higher levels of spatial resolution reveal tinier lung abnormalities. Not all detected lung nodules should be reported; however, radiologists strive to detect all nodules that might have relevance to cancer diagnosis. Although medium to large lung nodules are detected consistently, interreader agreement and reader sensitivity for lung nodule detection diminish substantially as the nodule size falls below 8 to 10 mm.

Artifactual Appearance of Thrombosis on Using Metal Artifact Reduction Software Reconstruction in Computed Tomographic Angiography.

The authors attempted to use metal artifact reduction software in 2 computed tomographic angiogram studies to decrease beam hardening. Although the beam hardening artifacts were reduced in the postprocessed images, there was an artifactual appearance of thrombosis in the adjacent arteries in the first case and in the inflow cannula of a left ventricular assist device in the second case. Comparison of the reconstructed images with the original images is therefore essential to avoid a misdiagnosis.

A two-dimensional deformable phantom for quantitatively verifying deformation algorithms.

PURPOSE: The incorporation of deformable image registration into the treatment planning process is rapidly advancing. For this reason, the methods used to verify the underlying deformation algorithms must evolve equally fast. This manuscript proposes a two-dimensional deformable phantom, which can objectively verify the accuracy of deformation algorithms, as the next step for improving these techniques. METHODS: The phantom represents a single plane of the anatomy for a head and neck patient. Inflation of a balloon catheter inside the phantom simulates tumor growth. CT and camera images of th

An efficient dual-domain deep learning network for sparse-view CT reconstruction.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We develop an efficient deep-learning based dual-domain reconstruction method for sparse-view CT reconstruction with small training parameters and comparable running time. We aim to investigate the model's capability and its clinical value by performing objective and subjective quality assessments using clinical CT projection data acquired on commercial scanners. METHODS: We designed two lightweight networks, namely Sino-Net and Img-Net, to restore the projection and image signal from the DD-Net reconstructed images in the projection and image domains, respectively.

Computed tomography dose optimization.

Use of computed tomography (CT) as a medical diagnostic imaging tool has increased in recent decades because of its technical advances in data acquisition speed and image reconstruction technology. The increased reliance on CT was accompanied by increased patient exposure to ionizing radiation, however, and concerns among radiologic professionals and the public regarding CT dose resulted in increasing attention to dose reduction. Research and education efforts have addressed many of these concerns, and radiologic technologists play a critical role in optimizing image quality and radiation dose

Object-constrained meshless deformable algorithm for high speed 3D nonrigid registration between CT and CBCT.

PURPOSE: High-speed nonrigid registration between the planning CT and the treatment CBCT data is critical for real time image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) to improve the dose distribution and to reduce the toxicity to adjacent organs. The authors propose a new fully automatic 3D registration framework that integrates object-based global and seed constraints with the grayscale-based "demons" algorithm. METHODS: Clinical objects were segmented on the planning CT images and were utilized as meshless deformable models during the nonrigid registration process. The meshless models reinforced a global
