Hypothesis: Folklore perpetuated expression of moon-associated bipolar disorders in anecdotally exaggerated werewolf guise.

We hypothesize that Moon-associated signals, recently linked to rapid cycling bipolar disorder, may have triggered extremely rare instances of extreme manic and aggressive behaviour that may be compatible with the folklore of the werewolf. Very limited literature on instances of clinical lycanthropy or violent/manic/madness behaviour in association with the Moon may be due to very rare lycanthropic psychosis and not knowing which signal(s) could determine Moon-mood associations. Mechanistically, lunar effects related to bipolar disorder, mood changes, and psychosis could involve either, or a c

Jael syndrome, or the nasty arrow.

The term "Jael syndrome" is a symbolic analogy referring to penetrating craniofacial trauma caused, intentionally or accidentally, by blade or similar weapon in which the foreign body is kept in-situ during initial management. It is rare in clinical and medicolegal practice, but is potentially life-threatening or with neurologic and functional impact. Its name comes from an episode in the Book of Judges in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) in which Jael, a woman, kills the Canaanite general Sisera by hammering a tent peg through his temple while he is asleep, thus ensuring the liberation of the

Prophylactic antibiotics for preventing pneumococcal infection in children with sickle cell disease.

BACKGROUND: People with sickle cell disease are particularly susceptible to infection. Infants and very young children are especially vulnerable, and the 'Co-operative Study of Sickle Cell Disease' observed an incidence rate of 10 per 100 patient years of pneumococcal septicaemia in children under the age of three. Vaccines, including customary pneumococcal vaccines, may be of limited use in this age group. Therefore, prophylactic penicillin regimens may be advisable for this population. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of prophylactic antibiotic regimens for preventing pneumococcal infectio

The Etiology of Moebius Syndrome-Making the Case for Animal Models.

Moebius syndrome (MBS) is a rare disease consisting of uni-/bilateral palsy of CN VI and VII without impairment of vertical eye movements. Its uncommon nature means that the etiology is still uncertain. It is thought to be caused by vascular lesions leading to infarction in the nuclei of cranial nerves VI and VII on the posterior aspect of the pons. However, several genes have also been discussed as possibly causative. We performed a literature search in the PUBMED database and on the Science Direct platform with terms related to the pathology and to each etiology individually. Included were o

Critical action procedures testing: a novel method for test-enhanced learning.

CONTEXT: Human error is a leading cause of adverse events in anaesthesia. Residents' knowledge of how to respond to rare, yet potentially life-threatening events has been shown to deteriorate over time and thus cost-effective educational interventions are indicated. Previous research has shown that test-enhanced learning has the potential to strengthen both clinical knowledge and performance. We hypothesised that critical action procedures (CAPs) tests, similar to those employed by high-performance aircraft pilots, would help improve resident knowledge about how to respond to rare and potentia

Medullary Tegmental Cap Dysplasia: Fetal and Postnatal Presentations of a Unique Brainstem Malformation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Medullary tegmental cap dysplasia is a rare brainstem malformation, first described and defined by James Barkovich in his book Pediatric Neuroimaging from 2005 as an anomalous mass protruding from the posterior medullary surface. We describe the neuroimaging, clinical, postmortem, and genetic findings defining this unique malformation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a multicenter, international, retrospective study. We assessed the patients' medical records, prenatal ultrasounds, MR images, genetic findings, and postmortem results. We reviewed the medical literature fo

Tumor-induced Osteomalacia: A Systematic Review and Individual Patient's Data Analysis.

CONTEXT: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome, usually caused by small, benign, and slow-growing phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors. Clinically, TIO is characterized by renal phosphate leak, causing hypophosphatemia and osteomalacia. This review was performed to assess the clinical characteristics of TIO patients described worldwide so far. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: On June 26, 2021, a systematic search was performed in Medline, Google Scholar, Google book, and Cochrane Library using the terms: "tumor induced osteomalacia," "oncogenic osteomalacia," "hypophosphatemia."

Clinicoradiological Features and Treatment Outcome of Supratentorial Intraparenchymal Epidermoid Cyst: A Report of Five Cases and Literature Review.

Objectives  Intraparenchymal epidermoid cysts (IECs) are rare lesions. They represent less than 1% of the intracranial epidermoid cysts. The supratentorial IEC is a clinically and prognostically distinct subset. Given the rarity, most of the articles are case reports. We present a series of five cases of supratentorial IEC to characterize their clinical presentation and outcome, with emphasis on the surgical features. Materials and Methods  We searched our database for all cases of intracranial epidermoid cysts operated between January 2005 and January 2020. Five patients were identified havin

[Textual Research on Chiding Disease and Matixiang Herb in Da he wai ke (External Medicine of Da He)].

Recorded in Da he wai ke (The External Medicine of Da He) in the Ming dynasty without a corresponding disease title in contemporary scholarly concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Chiding disease was described as an acute symptomatic disease with inevitable serious conditions of convulsion-like or mania-like behavior, and as a refractory ailment. It was also considered as an alias of Hongsiding (namely the acute lymphangitis) in few ancient books. Matixiang, a Chinese herb for treatment of Chiding, was regarded as a nonsuch drug by Da he wai ke, and was considered as a take-then-cure

Uterine fibroid: a review.

BACKGROUND: Uterine fibroid is a benign tumour of uterine smooth muscle. The purpose of this review is to bring to light the current spectra of presentation and management status of this benign and very important cause of menstrual and fertility disturbance in African women and the Black race in general. This is especially so with the trivialization of its aetological factors and treatment by claims from alternative medical practitioners. This review, therefore sought to document what is currently known about the condition and what could possibly be done to achieve better results in its manage

Complexities in Hoffa Fracture Management: A Case Report on Diagnosis and Fixation Technique.

INTRODUCTION: Hoffa fractures, accounting for 0.65% of femoral fractures, are rare injuries to the distal femur, typically affecting the lateral condyle. These fractures are often overlooked in radiographs and pose challenges in classification, as traditional systems like Letenneur's may not adequately address certain unique fracture patterns, as seen in the present case. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old male with trauma to the left knee and pelvis was diagnosed with a pelvic open-book injury and a coronal split Hoffa fracture of the lateral femoral condyle. Surgical fixation involved externa

Racism, African American Women, and Their Sexual and Reproductive Health: A Review of Historical and Contemporary Evidence and Implications for Health Equity.

Background: The sexual and reproductive health of African American women has been compromised due to multiple experiences of racism, including discriminatory healthcare practices from slavery through the post-Civil Rights era. However, studies rarely consider how the historical underpinnings of racism negatively influence the present-day health outcomes of African American women. Although some improvements to ensure equitable healthcare have been made, these historical influences provide an unexplored context for illuminating present-day epidemiology of sexual and reproductive health dispariti

Safety data and withdrawal of hepatotoxic drugs.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The occurrence of drug induced liver injury (DILI) is the most common reason of post-marketing withdrawals. DILI in humans is difficult to predict using in vitro cytotoxicity screening and animal studies. A review of hepatotoxicity data was performed with the aim of identifying relevant factors that could have predicted the occurrence of serious DILI. METHODS: The drugs withdrawn from the market due to hepatotoxicity in Europe and/or in USA either by marketing authorization holders or by Regulatory agencies from 1997 to 2016 were selected. The liver safety data and the wit

Acute sphenoid sinusitis induced blindness: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acute, isolated sphenoid sinusitis is a rare but potentially devastating clinical entity. Missing this diagnosis can lead to permanent vision loss due to injury of the optic nerve. Patients may present with preseptal inflammation, lid edema, chemosis, or ophthalmoplegia. OBJECTIVE: We report a case of acute sphenoid sinusitis in a 10-year-old child who presented to the Emergency Department with essentially painless vision loss. CASE REPORT: Previously healthy, the patient reported progressive decrease in vision in her right eye for the 5 days prior. Other than blurred vision in t

[Knowledge of the urogenital diseases in the work of Gaspar Casal, "natural and medical history of the Principality of Asturias" (1762)].

OBJECTIVES: Gaspar Casal (Gerona, 1680, Madrid, 1759) made most of his medical work in Oviedo (Asturias, Spain), where he lived for thirty-four years, before his return to Madrid as a doctor for the Royal House. Fruits of this work is the book "Natural and medical history of the Principality of Asturias" (Madrid, 1762), considered the best exponent of the Spanish medicine of the 18th century, and where the "disease of the rose", known later as pellagra or hypovitaminosis B, was first described in.
