Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) usually follows traumatic injuries or neurologic disorders. The authors report a rare case of RSD that followed intraarterial administration of cocaine in a patient with a history of intravenous drug abuse. In the literature there is no unanimity with respect to the diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD). Frequently, the diagnosis is established on mere clinical grounds. In our opinion, however, bone scintigraphy is of major importance for the diagnosis. Using this examination, true RSD can be clearly differentiated from other conditions which are incorrectly diagnosed and treated as RSD. Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is a syndrome characterized by pain in one or more extremities, usually associated with vasomotor changes. Its occurrence in childhood has long been thought to be rare. We describe six cases of pediatric reflex sympathetic dystrophy and suggest that this syndrome could be underdiagnosed in children and adolescents. We have reviewed 28 patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) who had 34 amputations in 31 limbs. The amputations had been performed for untenable pain (5), recurrent infection (14) or to improve residual function (15). Only two patients were relieved of pain by amputation, and this could not be predicted. Ten of 14 patients were cured of infection and 9 of 15 patients had improvement of residual function. The requisite visual modalities for the reflex blink to visual threat have not been thoroughly studied. We identified five patients with different focal cerebral lesions documented on computerized tomography scan who had abnormal blink-to-threat reflexes. In 27 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), stapedial reflexes were measured using impedance audiometry and compared with those of 11 age-matched control subjects. The object of this paper was to study the evolution of the stapedial reflex and its latency pattern during the first weeks of paralysis and to correlate these parameters with the evolution of the disease. We examined postural reflexes in 50 patients in a geriatric care facility. Patients aged 60 years and older who did not have orthostatic hypotension were subjected to a standing postural perturbation, and the degree of postural instability was recorded. Eighty-five consecutive post-CVA hemiplegic patients were assessed prospectively for radionuclide and clinical features of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD). Scintigraphy, a safe and relatively noninvasive procedure, has proved to be more sensitive than clinical evaluation for early diagnosis of RSD. RSD was found to be more prevalent in the post-CVA hemiplegic patient than previously reported. Twenty-one patients (25%) exhibited radionuclide evidence of RSD based on delayed scan criteria of increased uptake in the hemiplegic wrist, metacarpal-phalangeal (MCP) and interphalangeal (IP) joints.

Acoustic reflex growth was measured as a function of activator bandwidth in 10 subjects with normal hearing and in 5 subjects with different configurations of sensorineural hearing loss.
