What factors influence patient participation in an artificial intelligence-based initiative to optimise referrals from primary to specialist haematology care? A multicentre retrospective observational study in four Spanish hospitals.

ObjectivesIncreasing demand for haematological specialist care makes the optimisation of referrals and outpatient workflow a priority. Autom … tomated placing of standardised test orders can decrease low-value follow-up appointments. Explicit refusal to participate was low. Participants tended to be younger than non-participants, underlining the importance of designing strategies to target the older population in order to improve participation.

Social contact networks and disease eradicability under voluntary vaccination.

Certain theories suggest that it should be difficult or impossible to eradicate a vaccine-preventable disease under voluntary vaccination: Herd immunity implies that the individual incentive to vaccinate disappears at high coverage levels. Historically, there have been examples of declining coverage for vaccines, such as MMR vaccine and whole-cell pertussis vaccine, that are consistent with this theory. On the other hand, smallpox was globally eradicated by 1980 despite voluntary vaccination policies in many jurisdictions. Previous modeling studies of the interplay between disease dynamics and

Exploring Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Youths' E-Cigarette Resistance Strategies: Implications for Tobacco Product Use Prevention.

This study examined the e-cigarette and vaping resistance strategies used by Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) youths in rural Hawai'i. Focus groups (N = 17) were conducted in eight geographically dispersed elementary, middle/intermediate, and multilevel schools in low-income communities on Hawai'i Island. Sixty-nine youths (67% NHPI, Mage = 12.5 years) participated in this study. The resistance strategies discussed across the greatest number of groups were "refuse" (saying no), "explain" (providing reasons for vaping refusal), "avoid" (avoiding people or places where e-cigarettes we

General practitioners can increase participation in cervical cancer screening - a model program in Hungary.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is a preventable disease. Unfortunately, its mortality is high in Hungary: 9.2 deaths /100000 women/year in 2015. The Hungarian organized, nationwide cervical screening program was launched in 2003, but it could improve the coverage rate of cervical cancer screening only by a few percentage points. The vast majority of women still uses opportunistic screening and the organized screening program had little impact on participation by women who never or rarely consult their gynecologists. We assessed whether involving general practitioners in the cervical cancer screen

COVID-19 vaccine acceptance rates and predictors among the Egyptian general population and Healthcare workers, the intersectionality of age and other factors.

The promise of COVID-19 vaccines in ending the pandemic can only be achieved by overcoming the challenge of vaccine refusal. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are the trusted advisors of vaccination decisions. Recommendations for vaccinating children against COVID-19 are recently gaining more public health attention due to the role of children in disease transmission and associated morbidities. Vaccination is one of the first medical decisions parents or guardians make on behalf of their children. To investigate the determinants associated with vaccine acceptability among the general population throug

Lessons Learned in Virtual Launch of an Antenatal Opioid Exposure Study During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted researchers to develop new ways to design and launch studies and recruit and retain participants. Pregnant women and infants are considered vulnerable populations in research, and families affected by substance use are particularly difficult to recruit and retain. Recruitment for studies involving medical technologies such as MRI can also be difficult due to misconceptions and fear of the technologies. OBJECTIVES: This article aims to describe "lessons learned" during the launch of the Outcomes of Babies with Opioid Exposure (OBOE) study, including s

Self-management tasks to improve mobility and reduce fall risk are not leading to lower research participation in older adults.

PURPOSE OF STUDY: The first aim is to evaluate, in a sub-study, the recruitment process of the Senior Step Study, which was an intervention study on the self-management of mobility and fall risk; the second aim is to explore the reasons mentioned by older people, from three different settings, for (not) participating. METHODS: Subjects were community-dwelling older persons, residents of homes for the elderly, and older persons regularly visiting community centres. The effectiveness of different recruitment procedures was analysed for each setting separately. We also analysed reasons for accep

A Child With Oppositional Behavior After a Burn Injury: A Role for Inpatient Developmental Pediatrics Consults.

A 5-year-old girl with a history of autism spectrum disorder was admitted to inpatient rehabilitation after extensive accidental burns requiring skin grafts to her upper body. During her admission, she had increasingly aggressive behaviors toward staff, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and refusal to participate in therapies. She resisted transitions between activities, hit her bed rails, and eloped from her room. Goals during physical therapy sessions included stretching and strengthening her scarred extremities to increase mobility. Her behavior increased her risk of healing complications and bec…

Global misinformation, local consequences: conspiracy theory endorsement and a graded association with COVID-19 vaccine refusal across Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Conspiracy theories about COVID-19 vaccines circulated widely during the pandemic, yet their prevalence and association with vaccine refusal in sub-Saharan Africa remain poorly quantified. Understanding how global misinformation narratives shape vaccination acceptance in low- and middle-income settings is relevant to future pandemic preparedness. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey between October 2023 and April 2024, recruiting 870 adults through convenience sampling across Nigeria's six geopolitical regions. COVID-19 vaccines had been available in the country since 20

Childhood malignancies and decision making.

Failure to obtain "adequate" medical care for a child constitutes child neglect, which may be used as the basis for prosecution of parents, removal of the child from the home, or court-ordered medical treatment. "Adequate" care is usually construed as that which is given by a licensed physician, but, in case of dispute, courts almost never engage in choosing one medical approach over another. The principle that parents may not refuse medical care, however, is made very difficult when children have malignancies--the long-term nature of the treatment means that, if the child is left at home, cou

Effect of gender on prehospital refusal of medical aid.

BACKGROUND: "Refusal of medical aid" (RMA) is the term commonly used by emergency medical technicians (EMTs) when someone calls 911 for care (usually the patient or a family member) but, after the initial encounter with the EMTs, the patient refuses emergency medical services transport to the hospital. Some intervention may have been performed, such as taking vital signs or an electrocardiogram, before the RMA. Although there have been multiple studies of the characteristics and outcomes of patients who RMA, little analysis has been done of the role of EMTs in these cases. OBJECTIVE: To analy

Factors influencing consent to HIV testing among wives of heavy drinkers in an urban slum in India.

The study examined the influence of socio cultural factors, perception of risk and exposure to violence on consent to HIV testing among at risk women in an urban slum. Married women chosen via a multistage probability sampling in a section of Bangalore, India, between 18 and 44 years, sexually active and considered to be at risk because of their husband's hazardous drinking were recruited for the study. Written informed consent was obtained and measures of risk behavior and violence were administered. Pretest HIV counseling was then conducted and consent for HIV testing was sought. Factors inf
