Descended Social Anxiety Disorder and Craving in Women Heroin Dependence Through Exercise Alerts Plasma Oxytocin Levels.

Purpose: This study explored the association between peripheral blood oxytocin (OT) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) and cue-induced cravings in female heroin addicts. The effect of exercise on alleviation of SAD and OT levels was also explored. Methods: A total of 72 females with heroin dependence were assigned to three groups based on SAD severity. The three groups were Non-SAD control, SAD control, and SAD exercise groups. Subjects in the SAD exercise group underwent aerobic exercise and resistance training for 8 weeks (60 min/day, 5 days/week). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay analysis a

Mimetic violence and wartime organ donation between Israeli Jews and Palestinians.

This paper develops a theoretical framework for understanding how wartime organ donation can both interrupt and reinforce cycles of mimetic violence. Drawing on René Girard's mimetic theory, we analyze ethnographic and interview-based material collected between August 2021 and October 2022 from three cases of cross-community organ donation between Israeli Jews and Palestinians during armed conflict, examining how donor families and recipients frame bodily giving as an ethical, relational, and symbolic practice. The findings reveal a dual dynamic. Organ donation functions simultaneously as a bo

Online Relationships and Social Media Interaction in Youth Problem Gambling: A Four-Country Study.

The objective of this study was to examine if belonging to online communities and social media identity bubbles predict youth problem gambling. An online survey was administered to 15-25-year-old participants in the United States (N = 1212), South Korea (N = 1192), Spain (N = 1212), and Finland (N = 1200). The survey measured two dimensions of online behavior: perceived sense of belonging to an online community and involvement in social media identity bubbles. Belonging to an online community was examined with a single item and involvement in social media identity bubbles was measured with the

Effects of alcohol on ratings of emotional facial expressions in social phobics.

Social phobics have an increased risk of alcoholism. The mechanism behind this co-morbidity is not well understood. According to the appraisal-disruption model [Sayette, M. A. (1993). An appraisal-disruption model of alcohol's effects on stress responses in social drinkers. Psychological Bulletin, 114, 459-476], alcohol disrupts appraisal of threat stimuli unless the stimuli are easy to process. We investigated whether alcohol alters the judgment of emotional facial expressions in social phobics and controls. We also tested the judgment of emotionally ambiguous faces which should be more diffi

PRESS-Play: Musical Engagement as a Motivating Platform for Social Interaction and Social Play in Young Children with ASD.

Musical experiences are ubiquitous in early childhood. Beyond potential benefits of musical activities for young children with typical development, there has long been interest in harnessing music for therapeutic purposes for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, there is debate as to the effectiveness of these approaches and thus a need to identify mechanisms of change (or active ingredients) by which musical experiences may impact social development in young children with ASD. In this review, we introduce the PRESS-Play framework, which conceptualizes musical activities f

Chatbot relational dependence and psychosis risk: Conversational artificial intelligence as a potential behavioral addiction context.

Conversational artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are increasingly used for emotional support, companionship, and psychological reflection. Their capacity to simulate attentiveness, empathy, and conversational continuity may shift technology use from instrumental interaction toward relational engagement. Emerging clinical observations suggest that intensive chatbot use may, in vulnerable individuals, contribute to psychiatric destabilization, including reinforcement of maladaptive beliefs and, in rare cases, psychotic symptoms. This viewpoint proposes that conversational AI engagement can b

Positive Reinforcement Training in Captive Wild Mammals: An Integrative Review.

This review critically evaluates the impact of positive reinforcement training (PRT) on wild mammals maintained in ex situ environments, highlighting its role in enhancing animal welfare. The synthesis consolidates recent research on how PRT influences mammalian behavior and physiology with a focus on training techniques and types of reinforcers employed. A total of 46 studies from the past decade were analyzed: 17 directly examined the effects of PRT and 29 explored its application within broader ex situ management strategies that incorporated PRT alongside other approaches. Of these, 35 arti

Differential Effects of a Behavioral Treatment Probe on Social Gaze Behavior in Fragile X Syndrome and Non-Syndromic Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The purpose of this study was to examine potential differences in social learning between individuals with fragile X syndrome (FXS), the leading known inherited cause of intellectual disability, and individuals with non-syndromic autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Thirty school-aged males with FXS and 26 age and symptom-matched males with non-syndromic ASD, were administered a behavioral treatment probe designed to improve levels of social gaze during interactions with others. The treatment probe was administered by a trained behavior therapist over two days in our laboratory and included reinfor

How and why a multifaceted intervention to improve adherence post-MI worked for some (and could work better for others): an outcome-driven qualitative process evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: To explore (1) the extent to which a multicomponent intervention addressed determinants of the desired behaviours (ie, adherence to cardiac rehabilitation (CR) and cardiovascular medications), (2) the associated mechanism(s) of action and (3) how future interventions might be better designed to meet the needs of this patient population. DESIGN: A qualitative evaluation embedded within a multicentre randomised trial, involving purposive semistructured interviews. SETTING: Nine cardiac centres in Ontario, Canada. A psychosocial perspective on the glossectomy experience.

This analysis of the glossectomy experience based on Goffman's concepts of the preservation of self and of stigma management suggests several helpful responses for speech-language pathologists and other clinicians. Attention to psychosocial dimensions of recovery. In the face of life-threatening illness and necessarily radical treatment, the patient and others may trivialize or overlook psychosocial needs. The importance of specific social behaviors--talking on a telephone or eating in a restaurant--can only be understood in terms of the patient's own self-definition. The psychological impact

Hazardous drinking and alcohol use disorders.

Alcohol is one of the most widely consumed psychoactive drugs globally. Hazardous drinking, defined by quantity and frequency of consumption, is associated with acute and chronic morbidity. Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are psychiatric syndromes characterized by impaired control over drinking and other symptoms. Contemporary aetiological perspectives on AUDs apply a biopsychosocial framework that emphasizes the interplay of genetics, neurobiology, psychology, and an individual's social and societal context. There is strong evidence that AUDs are genetically influenced, but with a complex polyge

Alcohol Facilitates Social Dominance Via Activating Dopamine 1 Receptor-expressing Neurons in the Lateral Septum of Male Mice.

Acute alcohol consumption reduces behavioral inhibition while increasing locomotor activity, aggression, and social dominance, which is related to the mesolimbic dopamine system. The lateral septum (LS) abundantly expresses dopamine receptor neurons that critically regulate social motivation, reinforcement, and reward processing, their specific role in mediating acute alcohol related behavior remains poorly understood. In the present study, the acute alcohol exposure model (AAE) of male mice was established with different alcohol concentrations, and a tube, social interaction and open field te

Improving emotional face perception in autism with diuretic bumetanide: a proof-of-concept behavioral and functional brain imaging pilot study.

Clinical observations have shown that GABA-acting benzodiazepines exert paradoxical excitatory effects in autism, suggesting elevated intracellular chloride (Cl-)i and excitatory action of GABA. In a previous double-blind randomized study, we have shown that the diuretic NKCC1 chloride importer antagonist bumetanide, that decreases (Cl-)i and reinforces GABAergic inhibition, reduces the severity of autism symptoms. Here, we report results from an open-label trial pilot study in which we used functional magnetic resonance imaging and neuropsychological testing to determine the effects of 10 mon

Hypothalamic-amygdala gating of caregiving-like prosocial behavior in mice.

Distress sharing within an ingroup instinctively motivates caregiving-like prosocial behavior in social animals and humans, yet how aversive social stimuli paradoxically trigger such behavior remains unclear. Here, we show that stress-state matching in observer mice elicits caregiving-like behaviors (allogrooming and injury-targeted allolicking) toward cagemates in pain, resulting in synchronized social buffering. Importantly, we identify that the excitation of vasopressin receptor 1a-expressing (V1aR-expressing) neurons in the central medial amygdala (CeM) underlies both emotional-state match

Taste-dependent sociophobia: when food and company do not mix.

Using a combination of the paradigm of conditioned taste aversion (CTA) and of the paradigm of social interactions, we report here that in the rat, eating while anxious may result in long-term alterations in social behavior. In the conventional CTA, the subject learns to associate a tastant (the conditioned stimulus, CS) with delayed toxicosis (an unconditioned stimulus, UCS) to yield taste aversion (the conditioned response, CR). However, the association of taste with delayed negative internal states that could generate CRs that are different from taste aversion should not be neglected. Such

Delay discounting as a behavioral phenotype associated with social rank in female and male cynomolgus monkeys: Correlation with kappa opioid receptor availability.

Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is a significant problem worldwide, with no FDA-approved treatments. Epidemiological data indicate that only about 17 % of people that use cocaine will meet DSM criteria for CUD. Thus, the identification of biomarkers predictive of eventual cocaine use may be of great value. Two potentially useful predictors of CUD are social hierarchies in nonhuman primates and delay discounting. Both social rank and preference for a smaller, immediate reinforcer relative to a larger, delayed reinforcer have been predictive of CUD. Therefore, we wanted to determine if there was also

Reinforcement learning in child molesters.

BACKGROUND: Child molesters form a heterogeneous group, but one generally shared characteristic is maladaptive, rigid behaviour. Impairments in reinforcement learning may explain these maladaptive tendencies, but this has not been systematically investigated. Further, it is not known if such impairments vary with subtype of child molesters. AIMS: To investigate the presence of impairments in reinforcement learning among child molesters and to test for differences in patterns of impairment with subtype. METHODS: A group of 59 child molesters was recruited from several prisons in a two-stage s

Addiction to Snake Venom.

The nature of addiction depends on various factors. The tendency to have already used several addictive substances and to seek high sensation experiences as a result of specific personality traits may lead to extreme and peculiar forms of addictions. Even belonging to specific social and cultural background may lead to such forms of addiction such as intentional snake bite and willful envenomation. In this article, we have discussed the peculiarities and practical insight of such addiction to snake venom. The possible molecular mechanism behind such venom-mediated reinforcement has also been h

Expectancy influences the operation of personality on behavior.

The authors investigated the moderating effect of expectancies on personality for 2 different addictive behavior processes: (a) drinking and (b) binge eating and purging characteristic of bulimia nervosa. Study 1 found that positive expectancies for social facilitation from drinking moderated the effect of extraversion on drinking behavior among undergraduate men and women. Study 2 found that the expectancy that eating will help manage negative affect moderated the effect of trait urgency on bulimic symptoms among undergraduate women. Thus, the relationships of the trait risk factors to these

Mapping vulnerability for increased COVID-19 susceptibility and worse outcomes: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Infectious diseases can spread rapidly in the globalized world, and the complex intersection of individual, social, economic, and cultural factors make it difficult to identify vulnerabilities in the face of pandemics. METHODS: Therefore, this study aimed to identify vulnerability factors to infection and worse outcomes associated with COVID-19. This is a scoping review study of six databases that selected publications between 2019 and 2023, focusing on individual, social, and programmatic dimensions of vulnerability. The results were recorded in a spreadsheet and analyzed, cons
