Perceptions of airway protection tools: an international survey on the use of mouthpiece retaining straps in closed-circuit rebreather diving.

INTRODUCTION: Rebreather diving carries a high fatality rate (estimated 1.8-3.8 deaths per 100,000 dives), yet its popularity is growing. Among 54 French military divers who lost consciousness underwater, none died when using a mouthpiece retaining strap (MRS) in a team diving setup. Despite this, MRS use remains limited among recreational divers for whom drowning is a major cause of death. This study assessed knowledge, perceptions, and training regarding MRS use within the rebreather diving community. METHODS: An international online survey targeting certified rebreather divers was dissemin

Head and facial dimensions of Chilean workers for design purposes and the differences with other populations.

BACKGROUND: An appropriate match between a product and its end-users requires anthropometric data, which show variations among different countries. Proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) fit is key for safety and comfort. Chile had no head and facial anthropometric data available in order to design face/head PPE. OBJECTIVE: To describe face/head anthropometric characteristics of Chilean workers. Additionally, this study compared those dimensions against other populations (United States (US), South Korea and China). METHODS: An anthropometric survey involving 21 measures was conducted bet

How different helmet fixing options could affect patients' pain experience during helmet-continuous positive airway pressure.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged application time of helmet continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) leads to better outcomes, but its timing can be influenced by the patient's tolerance. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate patients' pain and tolerance experience related to different options of helmet fixing system: 'armpits strap' versus 'counterweights system'. DESIGN: This was a non-randomized crossover study performed in a 10-bed intensive care unit and referral extra corporeal membrane oxigenation (ECMO) centre of an Italian university hospital. RESULTS: Twenty patients were enrolled. For helme

The evaluation of CBRN canisters for use by firefighters during overhaul.

Air-purifying respirators (APRs) have been proposed to provide an additional respiratory protection option for structural firefighters involved in overhaul operations and wildland firefighters, where particulate and aldehyde exposures have been documented. Previous studies (Anthony et al., 2007) developed test methods to evaluate APR cartridges and canisters for use in overhaul activities, where initial findings indicated that multi-gas cartridges may not be effective. This study evaluated the performance of three chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) canisters (MSA, 3M, and S

Helmet hazards. Do's & don'ts of football helmet removal.

EMS providers must use extreme caution when evaluating and treating an unconscious football player, especially when the extent of the injury remains unknown. Suspect any unconscious football player has an accompanying spinal injury until proven otherwise. If the football player isn't breathing or the possibility of respiratory arrest exists, it's essential that certified athletic trainers and EMS providers work quickly and effectively to remove the face mask and administer care. In most situations, the helmet doesn't need to be removed in the field. Proper management of head and neck injuries

Health effects of organic dusts in the farm environment. Report on prevention and control.

Means for reduction of dust control were summarized and priorities assigned to education and engineering control of farm equipment in the work on prevention. Personal protection equipment was reviewed and positive pressure respiratory helmets suggested for more extended use. A fuller characterization of exposure agents, such as peak levels and measurement of different particle sizes was recommended. For medical prevention, priorities should be given to establishment of health care delivery organizations, particularly for farmers, and to specific prevention measures which were discussed in conn

Protecting Health Through Science and Standards: A Statement Supporting CSA Z94.4.

Healthcare staff deserve the same on-the-job protections as other workers. An updated Canadian standard finally should change some long-standing differences. Proposed updates to the Canadian Standards Association Z94.4 respiratory protection standard are a critical step toward protecting healthcare staff from airborne hazards, including viruses. The revisions clearly say the standard applies to healthcare (where it has been ignored historically). They require specific assessments for airborne pathogens (to determine minimum respiratory protection), and recognize the ethical obligation to apply

The use of germicidal ultraviolet light, vaporized hydrogen peroxide and dry heat to decontaminate face masks and filtering respirators contaminated with a SARS-CoV-2 surrogate virus.

BACKGROUND: In the context of the ongoing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, the supply of personal protective equipment remains under severe strain. To address this issue, re-use of surgical face masks and filtering facepiece respirators has been recommended; prior decontamination is paramount to their re-use. AIM: We aim to provide information on the effects of three decontamination procedures on porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV)-contaminated masks and respirators, presenting a stable model for infectious coronavirus decontamination of these typicall

Autoerotic asphyxia using a plastic bag loosely covering the head over a gas mask.

Autoerotic death is defined as the accidental death of an individual while masturbating, caused by a device or material used to enhance the sexual response. Here we report an autopsy case of autoerotic death and review the literature. A healthy, single, 33-year-old Japanese male was found dead in his room in a prone position. He was wearing a used gas mask and a plastic bag over his head; the opening of that bag was loosely secured around the neck with a belt. He had no underwear beneath his upper and lower work clothes and the zipper of his pants was open. Adult magazines and DVDs featuring m

Comparison of six respirator fit-test methods with an actual measurement of exposure in a simulated health care environment: Part I--Protocol development.

Quantitative fit tests (QNFT) have been assumed to be predictive of the protection respirators would provide to a wearer in the workplace. Workplace studies have consistently found no correlation between quantitative fit factors and workplace protection factors. This article is the first in a series of three describing a study designed to compare the fit factors from six QNFT methods against the actual dose of 1,1,2 trichloro-1,2,2 trifluoroethane (Freon-113) received under the same laboratory conditions. Five preliminary studies conducted to develop the protocol to assess the respirator weare

[Design and application of a ventilator circuit interface protective device for weaning].

With the continuous advancement and innovation in medical equipment technology, the transition between high-flow oxygen therapy, non-invasive ventilation, and invasive ventilation can be easily achieved by adjusting the ventilation mode of ventilators. During the weaning phase for tracheotomized patients, it is necessary to disconnect the ventilator circuit, change the ventilator mode, and gradually extend the weaning time to achieve complete ventilator liberation. During the weaning process, due to patients' excessive dependence on the ventilator, there may be situations where respiratory end

Protection against breathing dust: behavior over time in Californian farmers.

The aim of this study was to determine whether Californian farmers changed respiratory protective behaviors over time and the personal characteristics associated with protective behaviors. We surveyed 588 farmers longitudinally from 1993 to 2004. Questions included frequency of protective mask or respirator use in dusty conditions and the percentage of time the farmers drove a tractor with a closed cab. To assess longitudinal associations between protective behaviors and potential covariates, general estimating equation modeling was used with adjustment for subject age, study date, and other c

Extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal for patients with acute respiratory failure secondary to the acute respiratory distress syndrome: a systematic review.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) continues to have significant mortality and morbidity. The only intervention proven to reduce mortality is the use of lung-protective mechanical ventilation strategies, although such a strategy may lead to problematic hypercapnia. Extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO₂R) devices allow uncoupling of ventilation from oxygenation, thereby removing carbon dioxide and facilitating lower tidal volume ventilation. We performed a systematic review to assess efficacy, complication rates, and utility of ECCO₂R devices. We included randomised controlled tr

Epidemiology and socio-economic implications of dracunculiasis in eleven rural communities of District Bannu (Pakistan).

Nowadays, COVID-19 also known as novel coronavirus has become a global pandemic by causing severe respiratory tract infections in humans without any definite treatment or vaccine. Therefore, disease control measures include slowing down or averting the transfer of this viral infection from person to person. Continuous efforts are carried out to avoid the transmission of this disease to frontline healthcare personnel using single-use personal protective equipment (PPE). However, a critical shortage in this equipment around the world is becoming an alarming concern. Therefore, it is vital to pre
