A 69-year-old man presented with a rare case of retinal artery embolization, which occurred as a complication of carotid angioplasty and carotid artery stenting performed for recurrent cerebral infarction. Magnetic resonance imaging and angiography showed right internal carotid artery stenosis with ulceration. Carotid angioplasty and carotid artery stenting were performed using the distal protection system with the PercuSurge GuardWire. However, just after dilation, the patient complained of ocular pain and blurred vision on the right, which was subsequently diagnosed as retinal artery emboliz…

A 74-year-old female with acquired macroaneurysms of the retinal arteries of the left eye is presented. During a follow-up period of three years of this rare case, six macroaneurysms developed one after another. Three of them were treated by argon laser photocoagulation because of severe complications such as retinal haemorrhage and exudation onto the macula. However, recovery of visual function of the final stage following treatment was unsatisfactory. Concerning the unusual clinical course of this case, we speculate that severe arteriolosclerosis of the retinal vessels played a fundamental r

In five patients with obstruction of the retinal arteries, three with emboli, the circulation was reestablished by bulbus massage, intravenous administered acetazolamide and theophylamine. The patients were further treated with salicyclic acid for six months. An improvement of vision was obtained with maintained over a 2-year period. The basis of the present treatment occlusive arterial disorders in the retinal is discussed.

We describe a 15-year-old girl with congenital simple hamartoma of the retinal pigment epithelium associated with congenital retinal arterial macrovessel crossing the macular region. To our knowledge, there are no reports of this association.

PURPOSE: To report a novel protocol for diagnosis of retinal artery occlusions at the point of care using OCT and a remote consult model.
DESIGN: Retrospective case series and evaluation of a diagnostic test or technology.
PARTICIPANTS: Adult patients who presented with painless monocular vision loss and were diagnosed with a nonarteritic retinal artery occlusion.
METHODS: OCT machines were placed in the stroke center or emergency department at 3 hospitals within our health system. Patients who presented with painless monocular vision loss were evaluated by the stroke neurology service and …

Ocular manifestations include Takayasu retinopathy, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION), retinal artery occlusion (RAO) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO). We present two cases in which central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) was associated with Takayasu arteritis. PURPOSE: To describe a typical case of acute central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) with an ink-blot pattern of hyperfluorescent leak on fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA).
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 21-year-old woman came to the clinic with one day of painless right eye vision loss. Her right eye had finger counting at ½ meter. Her right eye had a relative afferent pupillary defect, but her anterior segment and intraocular pressure of both eyes were normal.
RESULTS: The right eye fundus showed signs of acute CRAO with severe grade on optical coherence tomography (OCT). FFA imaging showed a mid-…

PURPOSE: Few studies have explored the central retinal artery (CRA) using neuroimaging. Our study aimed to explore this using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: A total of 81 patients with intact orbital structures and visual function underwent thin-slice contrast MRI.
RESULTS: The identified CRAs showed highly variable morphologies on both axial and sagittal images. On the axial images, the CRAs were detected in the right orbit in 11.1% and in the left orbit in 19.8%. The distance between the site of CRA branching from the ophthalmic artery to the posterior limit of the bulb was 18.…

We report a case of a 28-year-old otherwise healthy female patient who presented with blurred vision in her right eye related to multiple branch retinal artery occlusions confirmed by fluorescein angiography. Investigation revealed positive antinuclear antibodies and an interatrial septal aneurysm on transthoracic echocardiography. The patient was treated with oral prednisolone and aspirin. Two months after her initial presentation, she developed hearing loss and tinnitus. Ophthalmological examination revealed temporal inferior and nasal inferior branch retinal artery occlusions in the left ey…

Optic disk melanocytoma (ODM) is a rare benign tumor of the optic disk. We report a rare occurrence of profound visual loss due to central retinal artery occlusion associated with ODM in a 78-year-old female with no significant medical history. The clinical findings were supplemented by ancillary investigations.

We report a case of branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) that occurred after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A 59-year-old man with no other previous diseases presented visual acuity deterioration in the left eye 24 hours after PCI. Fundus examination revealed ischemia at the temporal branch of the retinal artery associated with inner layer edema. Prompt treatment was performed with ocular digital massage and paracentesis of the anterior chamber. However, at discharge, the patient had a persistent visual loss with a central scotoma that persisted at 35-day follow-up without improve…

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a rare but blinding disorder. We present a case of a 81-year-old woman with multiple cardiovascular comorbidities admitted to the emergency department due to sudden, painless vision loss on left eye (oculus sinister (OS)) on awakening. The patient also reported long standing fatigue associated with effort that started 4 months before admission. She presented best corrected visual acuity of counting fingers OS. Funduscopy OS revealed macular oedema with cherry red spot pattern. Blood cultures came positive for Streptococcus gallolyticus in the context …

PURPOSE: This report describes a patient with bilateral, sequential central retinal artery occlusions (CRAOs) due to infective endocarditis (IE).
METHODS: A case report is presented.
RESULTS: A 35-year-old man with IE who recently completed a course of intravenous antibiotic therapy presented with sudden right-eye vision loss. Examination revealed hand motion vision, a cherry-red spot in the macula in the right eye, and an embolus in the inferotemporal arcade of the left eye. The diagnosis of right-eye CRAO secondary to IE was made, with the presumed source being his dental caries. The patie…

BACKGROUND: The objective of this publication is to report a case of an atypical partial central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) with substantial visual recovery without treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 83-year-old woman without significant medical history with sudden unilateral visual loss presented with no known significant ophthalmological or medical history besides systemic arterial hypertension. Examination showed multiple cotton-wool spots in a peripapillary distribution, as well as a heterogenous pattern of grey translucency in the macula resulting in an indistinct cherry-red spot. Flu…

PURPOSE: To report a case of ocular Gnathostomiasis presenting as branch retinal artery occlusion.
METHOD: Observational case report.
RESULT: A 22-year-old Asian woman presented to her ophthalmologist with redness, tearing, and decreased vision in her left eye. Examination revealed anterior uveitis and branch retinal artery occlusion associated with both intra-retinal and vitreous hemorrhage. The patient was treated with topical corticosteroids and cycloplegics. After 3 weeks, she presented in our emergency, with further decrease in vision and worsening pain in the left eye. Slit lamp examin…
