The 22-kDa antigen in optic nerve and retinal diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with unexplained visual loss were evaluated for the possibility of immunologic involvement. Antibody reactions were sought that might identify a common indication of retinal hypersensitivity. METHODS: The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blot analysis were used to identify autoantibody reactions with retina and optic nerve components. Comparisons were made with the autoantibody reaction of normal subjects and patients with recognized forms of retinal decay: macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, diabetic retinopathy, and paraneoplastic retinopathy

Photocoagulation of retinal, vascular, and macular diseases through intraocular lenses.

A survey of physicians in several retinal centers in this country provided information on more than 500 patients who underwent photocoagulation treatment primarily for retinal, vascular, and macular diseases, and in some instances, for retinal breaks. One hundred forty-two physicians responded to a questionnaire providing a broader experience on this type of photocoagulation. Seventy-eight of the physicians had not performed photocoagulation through an intraocular lens (IOL) and 64 had treated one or more patients. In view of the essentially satisfactory fundus lesions obtained by photocoagula

Retinal glial cells in glaucoma and age-related retinal diseases: Inflammatory responses, disease transitions, and translational perspectives.

Microglia, Müller cells, and astrocytes play a crucial role in maintaining retinal structure, homeostasis, and neuronal function. In disease, they undergo reprogramming that drives chronic inflammation and neurodegeneration. Unique to the retina, these glial cells occupy specialized niches and interact closely with the blood-retinal barrier, creating distinct vulnerabilities. We summarized the glial activation mechanisms, shared triggers, including oxidative stress, metabolic dysfunction, aging, and systemic inflammation, as well as key pathways, such as nuclear factor kappa-B, mitogen-activat

[Diagnostic significance of perimetry and microperimetry in common retinal diseases].

Perimetry with assessment of the light sensitivity threshold and indices of its loss has wide use in ophthalmology. This review considers three diseases in which static perimetry and microperimetry are used and for which outcome data are available - age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and hypertensive retinopathy. Despite differing opinions on the feasibility of using perimetry in the early stages of these diseases, the obtained data differ from normal values. Microperimetry is more often performed in combination with optical coherence tomography of the retina. Since perime

Complexity of PEDF multifunctional signaling in retinal development and diseases.

PEDF has neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative stress, and anti-angiogenic actions, but its multifunctional mechanisms remain unclear. We map the developmental distribution of the PEDF receptors LR, LRP6, and ATGL in naïve and Pedf-/- retinas, and define receptor-specific signaling using siRNA and pharmacological inhibition. These receptors are broadly expressed in retinoblasts and acquire cell-type-specific patterns during retinal maturation via PEDF-independent mechanisms. LR and LRP6 also colocalize at the outer limiting membrane (OLM). Functionally, PEDF activates AKT, STAT3,

Microglia in retinal vascular diseases: inflammatory mechanism and therapeutic target.

Retinal vascular diseases (RVDs) are leading causes of vision impairment and blindness, often associated with systemic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Despite treatment advancements, managing RVDs, particularly retinal vein occlusion (RVO), remains challenging due to the lack of a definitive cure and reliance on controlling complications. Microglia, the retina's resident immune cells, play a crucial role in maintaining retinal health, regulating inflammation, and modulating angiogenesis. In pathological conditions, microglia adopt heterogeneous and context-dependent activation stat

Detection of retinal diseases using an accelerated reused convolutional network.

Convolutional neural networks are continually evolving; with some efforts aimed at improving accuracy, others at increasing speed, and some at enhancing accessibility. Improving accessibility broadens the application of neural networks across a wider range of tasks, including the detection of eye diseases. Early diagnosis of eye diseases and consulting an ophthalmologist can prevent many vision disorders. Given the importance of this issue, various datasets have been collected from the cornea to facilitate the process of making neural network models. However, most of the methods introduced in

[Opticopathies in the differential diagnosis of retinal diseases - part 2].

Due to the close anatomical, functional and trophic relationships between the optic nerve and retina, a wide variety of diseases affecting both structures have reciprocal effects on each other, which must be considered in the differential diagnosis to avoid misdiagnosis. Therefore, it is essential to assess pathological changes in both structures in context to differentiate the type and location of the primary lesion from its consequences, as well as to correctly classify coincidences and disease-specific lesion patterns in both organ components. This article highlights the typical symptom cons

The retinal pigment epithelium: Functions and roles in ocular diseases.

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) between retinal photoreceptors and choroidal capillaries is a single layer of cells that are of critical importance to the eye. RPE cells are derived from the anterior neural plate of neuroectodermal origin. Instructed by specific molecules and signaling pathways, the RPE undergoes formation and maturation to form a functional unit together with photoreceptors. The RPE plays crucial roles in maintaining normal retinal structure and functions, such as phagocytosis; barrier function; transportation of nutrients, ions, and water; resistance to oxidative damage

Clinical Use of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Retinal Diseases.

The advent of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is one of the cornerstones of fundus imaging. Essentially, its mechanism depends on the visualization of blood vessels by using the flow of erythrocytes as an intrinsic contrast agent. Although it has only recently come into clinical use, OCTA has become a non-invasive diagnostic tool for the diagnosis and follow-up of many retinal diseases, and the integration of OCTA in multimodal imaging has provided a better understanding of many retinal disorders. Here, we provide a detailed overview of the current applications of OCTA technolo

Recent Advances in Clinical Applications of Imaging in Retinal Diseases.

Many diseases that cause visual impairment, as well as systemic conditions, manifest in the posterior segment of the eye. With the advent of high-speed, high-resolution, reliable, and noninvasive imaging techniques, ophthalmologists are becoming more dependent on ocular imaging for disease diagnosis, classification, and management in clinical practice. There are rapid advances on the indications of multimodal retinal imaging techniques, including the application of ultra-widefield fundus angiography, fundus autofluorescence, optical coherence tomography, as well as optical coherence tomography
