Retinal blood flow reversal quantitatively monitored in out-of-plane vessels with laser Doppler holography.

Laser Doppler holography is a planar blood flow imaging technique recently introduced in ophthalmology to image human retinal and choroidal blood flow non-invasively. Here we present a digital method based on the Doppler spectrum asymmetry that reveals the local direction of blood flow with respect to the optical axis in out-of-plane vessels. This directional information is overlaid on standard grayscale blood flow images to depict flow moving towards the camera in red and flow moving away from the camera in blue, as in ultrasound color Doppler imaging. We show that thanks to the strong contri

Morphology of retinal vessels in the optic disk in a Göttingen minipig experimental glaucoma model.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the morphology of normal, healthy Gottingen minipig retinal vessels of the optic disk with experimentally induced glaucomatous optic disks in order to identify the glaucomatous excavation. Present results were compared to human glaucoma findings. PROCEDURE: Sixteen eyes from eight Göttingen minipigs were studied using fundoscopic photography and fluorescein angiography. Experimental glaucoma was then induced in the left eyes over 14 months, and changes in the optic disk vessels were assessed using fundoscopic photography and fluorescein angiography. The changes were comp…

Retinal vascularization from a new angle: A systematic review of temporal retinal vessel angles in familial exudative vitreoretinopathy.

PURPOSE: Retinal temporal vessel angles (TVA) could function as a clinical marker to reflect the structural and functional integrity of the macular region. We aimed to systematically search and appraise all literature investigating the association between temporal vessel angles (TVA) and familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR). METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. We identified articles examining the association between TVA and FEVR by systematically searching PubMed, Medline, EMBASE and SCOPUS, on January 15, 2024. Additional studies were l

Impact of Major Retinal Vessel Position on Sectoral Peripapillary Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness in Healthy Eyes.

PRÉCIS: The position of the major retinal vessels varies across healthy individuals. This measurement significantly correlates with sectoral retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and can potentially improve the use of normative databases. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the variability of major vessel position (MVP) among healthy individuals and its effect on optical coherence tomography (OCT) sectoral retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness measurements. METHODS: Circumpapillary RNFL (cpRNFL) circle scans were collected from 88 healthy individuals (88 eyes). The MVP was determined using the commercial…

Association of papilledema severity with retinal vessel tortuosity in idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

PURPOSE: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) induces papilledema and can result in progressive visual dysfunction and retinal vascular changes. The purpose of the current study was to determine cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between papilledema severity and retinal vessel tortuosity (RVT) in IIH. METHODS: Images from 24 eyes of 15 patients diagnosed with papilledema were acquired at two visits. Papilledema severity was graded by Frisen score (FS). Images were analyzed to determine RVT in arteries and veins within the peripapillary region using the first-order derivative

Vessel density and retinal nerve fiber layer in pathological intraocular pressure.

AIM: The aim of the study was to determine the correlation between intraocular pressure (IOP) and thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and vascular density (VD) in the optic nerve. MATERIAL AND METHODOLOGY: IOP was greater than 21 mmHg (21-36 mmHg) in all eyes and was measured as the result of an average of three measurements with the instrument Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA, Reichert). RNFL and VD thickness (in the papillary region of 4.5 x 4.5 mm) was measured with the instrument Avanti RTVue XR (Optovue). In the case of the VD, the scan area was further separated into individ

(DA-U)2Net: double attention U2Net for retinal vessel segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Morphological changes in the retina are crucial and serve as valuable references in the clinical diagnosis of ophthalmic and cardiovascular diseases. However, the retinal vascular structure is complex, making manual segmentation time-consuming and labor-intensive. METHODS: This paper proposes a retinal segmentation network that integrates feature channel attention and the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) attention within the U2Net model. First, a feature channel attention module is introduced into the RSU (Residual Spatial Unit) block of U2Net, forming an Attention-RSU

[Cardiovascular risk factors, haemostasis and antithrombotic treatment in retinal vessel occlusion].

Venous and arterial retinal vascular occlusions are age-related disorders, generally associated with classical cardiovascular risk factors, rather than an isolated ocular disease. As affected patients often also have an increased general risk for other vascular diseases, such as ischemic stroke, an interdisciplinary clarification of cardiovascular risk factors and systemic comorbidities is essential for all patients. Extended hemostaseological investigations may be recommended in those patients who do not match the typical risk profile. Patients at a young age by the time of manifestation, wit

ROSE: A Retinal OCT-Angiography Vessel Segmentation Dataset and New Model.

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) is a non-invasive imaging technique that has been increasingly used to image the retinal vasculature at capillary level resolution. However, automated segmentation of retinal vessels in OCTA has been under-studied due to various challenges such as low capillary visibility and high vessel complexity, despite its significance in understanding many vision-related diseases. In addition, there is no publicly available OCTA dataset with manually graded vessels for training and validation of segmentation algorithms. To address these issues, for the firs…

HDC-Net: A hierarchical dilation convolutional network for retinal vessel segmentation.

The cardinal symptoms of some ophthalmic diseases observed through exceptional retinal blood vessels, such as retinal vein occlusion, diabetic retinopathy, etc. The advanced deep learning models used to obtain morphological and structural information of blood vessels automatically are conducive to the early treatment and initiative prevention of ophthalmic diseases. In our work, we propose a hierarchical dilation convolutional network (HDC-Net) to extract retinal vessels in a pixel-to-pixel manner. It utilizes the hierarchical dilation convolution (HDC) module to capture the fragile retinal bl…

Distinguishing Familial from Acquired Traits in the Retinal Blood Vessel Arborization.

PURPOSE: It has been suggested that retinal blood vessel arborization (RBVA) is unique to each individual. We examined this claim in a pedigree that included two pairs of monozygotic twins. METHODS: Fundus photographs were taken of subjects belonging to this pedigree to compare the pattern of their RBVA. Pattern prevalence within the general population was estimated from a pre-existing clinical database. RESULTS: The optic nerve head (ONH) RBVA disclosed the following patterns: pattern A, outgrowth, with angle sizes ranging from 12° to 86°, toward the macula, made by the central retinal (CR)

Dietary Patterns and Retinal Vessel Caliber in the Irish Nun Eye Study.

BACKGROUND: Retinal vessel abnormalities are associated with cardiovascular disease risk. Widening of retinal venules is associated with increased risk of stroke while narrowing of retinal arterioles independently predicts incident hypertension, coronary heart disease and diabetes. Dietary factors are known to play an important role in cardiovascular health. However, few studies have examined the association between dietary patterns (DPs) and retinal microvascular health. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between 'a posteriori'-derived DPs and retinal vascular caliber (RVC) in older women

[Static Retinal Vessel Analysis in Population-based Study SHIP-Trend].

BACKGROUND: Interdisciplinary investigations of possible connections between general diseases and ophthalmological changes are difficult to perform in the clinical environment. But they are gaining in importance as a result of the age-related increase in chronic diseases. The collection of health-related parameters in the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP) project allows to derive conclusions for the general population. METHODS: The population-based SHIP trend study was conducted between 2008 and 2012 in Greifswald. The baseline cohort included 4420 subjects (response 50.1%) at the age of 20
