Mini-med school for Aboriginal youth: experiential science outreach to tackle systemic barriers.

INTRODUCTION: Addressing systemic barriers experienced by low-income and minority students to accessing medical school, the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine has spearheaded a year-round, mini-med school outreach initiative for Aboriginal students. METHOD: Junior and senior high school youth generally attend the half-day program in classes or camps of 15-25, breaking into small groups for multisession activities. Undergraduate medical education students mentor the youth in stations offering experiential lessons in physical examination, reading x-rays, and anatomy. All resourc

Description of School Outcomes Among Children With Traumatic Brain Injuries, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Concussion Surveillance System Pilot.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common injury in children. Though research on youth TBI has largely focused on high school students, this study describes selected school outcomes after TBI in the past 12 months among children aged 5-17 years. METHODS: Data from parent-proxy respondents from the pilot administration of the National Concussion Surveillance System (a random-digit-dial telephone survey with over 10,000 adult respondents) were examined. Descriptive statistics of demographic and injury characteristics of children who sustained a TBI were calculated. The association be

[Mental disorders induced by experiences of being bullied].

The author investigated 25 adolescent patients (9 males, 16 females) whose mental disorders seemed to be induced by their experiences of being bullied at school. The patients were treated by the author in the outpatient clinic or the inpatient ward of National Defense Medical College Hospital during 10 years, 1978 through 1988. These patients were classified into 4 groups from the viewpoint of their clinical symptoms and signs. The author called each group as follows; 1) paranoid-hallucinatory group, 2) withdrawal group, 3) escaping-into-fantasy group, and 4) somatoform group. The paranoid-hal

Outcomes After Arthroscopic Posterior Labral Repair With All-Suture Anchors in Football Players.

BACKGROUND: Posterior glenoid labral injuries are more common in football players than in the general population. Arthroscopic repair with all-suture anchors has proven to be an effective technique to address other abnormalities, allowing for low-profile constructs that minimize damage to surrounding tissue. Few studies have examined the outcomes of posterior labral repair with all-suture anchors in football players. HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that after labral repair with all-suture anchors, functional outcomes would improve, revision rates would be low, return-to-sport rates would be h

Sport Concussion Assessment Tool-2: baseline values for high school athletes.

BACKGROUND: Concussion head injuries are common in high school athletes. The Sport Concussion Assessment Tool-2 (SCAT2) has been recommended and widely adopted as a standardised method of evaluating an injured athlete with a suspected concussion. Sideline return to play decisions can hinge on the results of a SCAT2 score. However, most athletes will not have had baseline testing performed for comparison if injury occurs. Therefore, establishing of age-, sex- and sport-matched normative data for the high school athlete population is critical. PURPOSE: To determine baseline scores in all SCAT2

Serratus Anterior Muscle Injury in an Overhead-Throwing Athlete: A Report of a Rare Case With Serial Ultrasonographic Observations.

Serratus anterior muscle injuries in overhead athletes are extremely rare, and no consensus exists regarding treatment strategies or return-to-play timelines. We report the case of a high school baseball pitcher who sustained a serratus anterior injury. Ultrasonography revealed swelling and a hypoechoic area in the lower fibers of the serratus anterior at the level of the seventh and eighth ribs. Based on these findings, conservative management with localized compression was initiated, without the use of any medications, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Serial ultrasonographic m

Prevalence of Concussion-Related Policies and Practices Among Public School Districts in the United States, 2012 and 2016.

BACKGROUND: Beginning in 2009, there was an increase in the number of states with laws addressing 3 different components of youth sports-related concussion prevention and management: concussion education, removal from play, and medical clearance requirements before allowing an athlete to return to play. Schools are an important setting to implement policies and practices related to concussions, as many youth participate in organized sports through school venues. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the prevalence of concussion-related policies and practices adopted by school districts changed from 2

Acute Compartment Syndrome.

In brief A high school football player suffered an acute lateral lower leg compartment syndrome following an apparent peroneal muscle strain. Early diagnosis was made on the basis of worsening symptoms and signs and by intracompartment pressure readings. Prompt fasciotomy and removal of necrosed tissue, followed by casting and then air splinting, allowed a full recovery and return to play.

The economic impacts of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Our study documents the direct costs, family costs and community (extra school) costs. One hundred and twenty families with children who had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) diagnosed by established criteria and who lived in New England were asked to participate. All data except inpatient charged were collected via questionnaire. The questionnaire return rate was 59% (N = 70). The mean annualized direct cost/child was 7,905 (inpatient, $1,717; outpatient, $5,700; and nonmedical, $488). Family costs averaged $1,524/year (out of pocket medical and nonmedical, $1,196; lost salary, $328), which

Repetition, repetition compulsion, motivation, interpretation.

This paper presents three different conceptualizations (interpretations) of the phenomenon of "repetition compulsion" in the various psychoanalytic schools that refers explicitly to this conception--as return to, return of (reproduction) or recreation (transcendental transformation), or as a linear, circular or spiral-like psychic movement accordingly. The paper analyzes the metapsychological assumptions of each mode of interpretation and tries to relate the psychic models underlying these conceptions to the questions of psychotherapeutic attitude and technique in the clinical situation.
