Clubroot, caused by the obligate parasite Plasmodiophora brassicae, is a soilborne disease affecting canola (Brassica napus) and other crucifers. Although planting resistant cultivars remains the primary strategy for managing clubroot, the emergence of resistance-breaking P. brassicae pathotypes continues to threaten canola production. In this context, soil and root microorganisms may play a role in suppressing the disease. This study investigated the impact of P. brassicae infection on the microbial communities of soil, seeds, roots, and the rhizosphere in susceptible and resistant canola lin

Millets are highly nutritious crops mostly cultivated in xeric regions of Asia and Africa. The specific agro-climatic characteristics of millets enable the rhizosphere to host diverse microorganisms that assist in the crop's progression under harsh weather conditions. This research work intends to evaluate the plant growth-promoting (PGP) potential of the rhizospheric microbes isolated from the soil of Panicum sumatrense and Eleusine coracana from Kunnanchala and Varagampadi, residing areas of Irulas Tribal Community located in the Attapadi Hills of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, respectively. The prolonged practice of continuous potato cropping, coupled with inadequate field management, disrupts the soil bacterial community equilibrium. Such disturbances compromise the resilience of the soil ecosystem, predisposing it to an increased incidence of potato diseases. However, the effects of the phosphorus fertiliser application rate on the rhizosphere soil bacterial community composition of potatoes and the occurrence of potato common scab (CS) have not been adequately studied. Here, diseased field soils from Dingxi and Huidong Counties were collected for potting tests, and field tests

BACKGROUND: Actinobacteria are major producers of antibacterial and antifungal metabolites and are growing their search for substances of biotechnological interest, especially for use in agriculture, among other applications. The Amazon is potentially rich in actinobacteria; however, almost no research studies exist. Thus, we present a study of the occurrence and antifungal potential of actinobacteria from the rhizosphere of Inga edulis, a native South American plant and one that is economically useful in the whole of the Amazon.
METHODS: Among the 64 actinobacteria strains isolated from the

In this study, the available phosphorus (AP) and TCF concentrations in soils and maize (Zea mays) seedling tissues were measured in response to escalating TCF concentrations during 216 hr of culture. Maize seedlings growth considerably enhanced soil TCF degradation, reaching the highest of 73.2% and 87.4% at 216 hr in 50 and 200 mg/kg TCF treatments, respectively, and increased AP contents in all the seedling tissues. Soil TCF was majorly accumulated in seedling roots, reaching maximum concentration of 0.017 and 0.076 mg/kg in TCF-50 and TCF-200, respectively. The hydrophilicity of TCF might h

The constant application of manure-based fertilizers in vegetable farms leads to antibiotic residue accumulation in soils, which has become a major stressor affecting agroecosystem stability. The present study investigated the adaptation profiles of rhizosphere microbial communities in different vegetable farms to multiple residual antibiotics. Multiple antibiotics, including trimethoprim, sulfonamides, quinolones, tetracyclines, macrolides, lincomycins, and chloramphenicols, were detected in the vegetable farms; the dominant antibiotic (trimethoprim) had a maximum concentration of 36.7 ng/g.

Halosulfuron methyl (HM) is a new, highly active sulfonylurea herbicide that has been widely used for weed control in agricultural production. However, its potential ecological risks remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the impact of different concentrations of HM on bacterial communities in sugarcane rhizospheric soil by using 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing. The half-life of HM for 130 mg/kg, 600 mg/kg, and 1300 mg/kg spraying concentrations were 6.64, 9.19, and 9.87 d, respectively. HM application did not alter the alpha or beta diversity of the soil bacterial community,

More than 3,000 isolates of fluorescent pseudomonads have been collected from plant roots in Japan and screened for the presence of antibiotic-synthesizing genes. In total, 927 hydrogen cyanide (HCN)-, 47 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (PHL)-, 6 pyoluteorin (PLT)-, 14 pyrrolnitrin (PRN)-, and 8 phenazine (PHZ)-producing isolates have been detected. A cluster analysis (≥99% identity) identified 10 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in antibiotic biosynthesis gene-possessing pseudomonads. OTU HLR (PHL, PLT, and PRN) contained four antibiotics: HCN, PHL, PLT, and PRN, while OTU RZ (PRN and PHZ) conta

Plant-associated soil microbes are important mediators of plant defence responses to diverse above-ground pathogen and insect challengers. For example, closely related strains of beneficial rhizosphere Pseudomonas spp. can induce systemic resistance (ISR), systemic susceptibility (ISS) or neither against the bacterial foliar pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (Pto DC3000). Using a model system composed of root-associated Pseudomonas spp. strains, the foliar pathogen Pto DC3000 and the herbivore Trichoplusia ni (cabbage looper), we found that rhizosphere-associated Pseudomonas spp.

Rhizosphere bacteria can have a range of impacts on their plant host. Bacteriophage, viruses which specifically infect and kill bacteria, shape diverse microbial communities by lysing beneficial, commensal and pathogenic bacterial species. Phage mediated bacterial lysis could therefore be deployed to target bacterial species in the rhizosphere to suppress disease without reducing the positive effects of other bacterial communities on the host plant. Here we isolated, sequenced, and characterized four virulent bacteriophage that target two Canola-root associated bacterial isolates, Klebsiella g

The soil-borne necrotrophic fungus Sclerotium rolfsii is a globally important pathogen causing collar rot, southern blight, and damping-off in diverse crops, resulting in substantial losses in yield, particularly during warm and cloudy weather. Through processes like niche competition, antibiosis, induced systemic resistance, and enzymatic destruction of pathogen propagules, there is mounting evidence that the rhizosphere microbiome is crucial in influencing disease outcomes. This systemic review synthesizes published evidence on rhizosphere microbial structure and function under S. rolfsii pr
