Parosteal lipoma of the rib.

Parosteal lipoma is a rare benign tumor that is composed mainly of benign mature lipocytes, and it has an intimate association with the underlying periosteum of affected bone. Parosteal lipoma involving the rib is quite rare. We believe that only four cases have been previously reported in the English literature. Here we describe an exceedingly rare case of parosteal lipoma that developed in the right seventh rib, which presented in a 50-year-old man having a previous history of trauma at this site.

Perils of rib fractures.

Rib fractures (RF) are noted in 4 to 12 per cent of trauma admissions. To define RF risks at a Level 1 trauma center, investigators conducted a 10-year (1995-2004) retrospective analysis of all trauma patients. Blunt chest trauma was seen in 13 per cent (1,475/11,533) of patients and RF in 808 patients (55% blunt chest trauma, 7% blunt trauma). RF were observed in 26 per cent of children (< 18 years), 56 per cent of adults (18-64 years), and 65 per cent of elderly patients (> or = 65 years). RF were caused by motorcycle crashes (16%, 57/347), motor vehicle crashes (12%, 411/3493), pedestrian-a

Hydatid disease of rib.

Osseous hydatidosis, especially when located in the rib, is a very rare disease. In 1978, only 39 costal echinococcosis cases were published. The course of the disease is generally slow and laboratory tests are frequently negative. Diagnosis is generally made through the combined assessment of clinical, radiologic, and laboratory data. Living in a rural area is an important risk factor for the disease. The gold standard for therapy is radical removal of the involved ribs or chest wall. We present the case of a 63-year-old herdsman with costal echinococcosis and a review of the literature.

Rib fractures in children.

We reviewed the charts of 21 children admitted to the hospital with rib fractures to determine the cause of trauma, the relationship of the number and location of rib fractures to other injuries, the course of flail chest in children, and the frequency and characteristics of injuries caused by child abuse. Sixteen (76%) of 21 children were injured by accidental causes, most commonly by motor vehicles. However, five (24%) children were victims of child abuse. Nineteen children fractured an average of 3.5 ribs (range 1 to 8), while two other children fractured 22 and 23 ribs. Neither an increase…

Slipping-rib syndrome.

A survey of 46 patients with the slipping-rib syndrome shows that it is a condition which affects mainly middle-aged people. It is equally common in men and women. The main symptom is upper abdominal pain, equally common on either side and occasionally bilateral. The pain is precipitated by movement and certain postures and is faithfully reproduced by pressure at one or more points on the costal margin. The cause of the "slipping rib" is not known. Symptoms are relieved by reassurance and in some cases by injection of local anaesthetic into painful sites.
