Gambling harm is everybody's business: A public health approach and call to action.

There is a growing consensus that gambling is a public health issue and that preventing gambling related harms requires a broad response. Although many policy decisions regarding gambling are made at a national level in the UK, there are clear opportunities to take action at local and regional levels to prevent the negative impacts on individuals, families and local communities. This response goes beyond the statutory roles of licencing authorities to include amongst others the National Health Service (NHS), the third sector, mental health services, homelessness and housing services, financial

Deprescribing benzodiazepines across different healthcare settings: a quality improvement initiative.

Due to growing awareness of risks associated with benzodiazepine (BZD) use, these medications are now considered potentially inappropriate for older adults. Despite this, older adults are more likely to receive these medications than younger adults, with those in long-term care (LTC) being particularly vulnerable, emphasising the importance of reducing BZD prescriptions. Other studies have shown success in reducing BZD prescriptions using a patient-focused multicomponent intervention: however, this approach has not been well studied in LTC.During a seventeen-month quality improvement (QI) init

First generation migrants' experiences of terminal illness: a systematic review of diasporic dying.

BACKGROUND: Migration is an established global phenomenon. While many newly arrived migrants have better health than the general population of the country they have moved to, migrants also have their own healthcare needs and face particular issues when diagnosed with a terminal illness. First generation migrants are less likely to have social, financial, and medical supports when faced with a terminal illness. These factors make first generation migrants an important group to understand in order to inform service commissioning and delivery. METHODS: The systematic review was an international

Theta-band oscillatory activity differs between gamblers and nongamblers comorbid with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in a probabilistic reward-learning task.

Problemgambling is thought to be comorbid with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We tested whether gamblers and ADHD patients exhibit similar reward-related brain activity in response to feedback in a gambling task. A series of brain electrical responses can be observed in the electroencephalogram (EEG) and the stimulus-locked event-related potentials (ERP), when participants in a gambling task are given feedback regardless of winning or losing the previous bet. Here, we used a simplified computerized version of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) to assess differences in reinforcement

Volatility spillovers between energy market and carbon market: The TVP-SV-VAR and DCC-GARCH-Connectedness approaches.

This study utilizes energy futures and EUA futures settlement price data from 2009 to 2024 to examine the responses of energy and carbon markets to volatility shocks and their volatility spillover relationships. Based on the logarithmic conditional volatility series of return series computed by the univariate GARCH (1, 1) model, a TVP-SV-VAR model is constructed to identify the time-varying responses of volatility shocks between energy futures and EUA futures. Within the DCC-GARCH framework, the volatility impulse response function (VIRF) and generalized forecast error variance decomposition (

Optimal location of emergency stations in underground mine networks using a multiobjective mathematical model.

Background Every year, many mining accidents occur in underground mines all over the world resulting in the death and maiming of many miners and heavy financial losses to mining companies. Underground mining accounts for an increasing share of these events due to their special circumstances and the risks of working therein. Thus, the optimal location of emergency stations within the network of an underground mine in order to provide medical first aid and transport injured people at the right time, plays an essential role in reducing deaths and disabilities caused by accidents Objective The mai

Bridging the gap: optimizing conduction system pacing for cost-effectiveness and widespread adoption in low-resource settings.

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular apical (RVA) pacing often leads to interventricular dyssynchrony and pacing-induced cardiomyopathy. Conduction system pacing (CSP), particularly Left Bundle Branch Area Pacing, provides a physiologic alternative. In Limited Resource Countries (LRCs) like Thailand, Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) under-penetration persists due to high costs and a shortage of operators skilled in coronary venous anatomy. OBJECTIVE: To share the experience and provide clinical update of CSP as a sustainable, cost-effective physiological pacing strategy to improve access to a

Underserved Patient Populations With Metastatic Breast Cancer: A Review of Progress and Remaining Challenges.

Breast cancer presents a significant risk to public health and is the primary cause of cancer-related death in women. Awareness of metastatic breast cancer (mBC) continues to increase, and advances have been made; however, challenges remain for many patient populations that do not receive equal opportunities along the treatment pathway. The Underserved Patient Population (UPP) Coalition Task Force, a group of international experts in mBC, held meetings between 2022 and 2023 to prioritise the needs of UPPs and propose solutions. The key unmet needs identified included the following: delayed dia

What predicts persistent depression in older adults across Europe? Utility of clinical and neuropsychological predictors from the SHARE study.

BACKGROUND: Depression in later life frequently persists and perpetuating factors are of immediate therapeutic relevance to clinicians. No studies of this scale have examined both clinical and neuropsychological predictors of persistent depression in a cross-national European context. METHODS: 4095 community dwelling older adults (≥ 50 yr) with clinically signficant depression (EURO-D ≥ 4) from eleven European countries in the Survey of Heath, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) were followed for a median of 28 months. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine predictors o

Exercise and return-to-play for the adolescent and young adult cardio-oncology athlete: case study and review.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based and/or consensus guidance regarding exercise and return-to-play for the adolescent and young adult (AYA) athlete with cardio-oncology concerns is lacking. Many of the recommendations utilized for the diagnosis, surveillance, and management of cancer therapeutic-related cardiotoxicity in children have been extrapolated from adult literature and myocarditis guidelines, the latter of which are primarily concerned with potential for arrhythmias secondary to inflammation and myocardial scarring. In addition, the athlete's heart itself brings about several diagnostic chall

Prevalence and associated factors of elder mistreatment in a rural community in People's Republic of China: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Current knowledge about elder mistreatment is mainly derived from studies done in Western countries, which indicate that this problem is related to risk factors such as a shared living situation, social isolation, disease burden, and caregiver strain. We know little about prevalence and risk factors for elder mistreatment and mistreatment subtypes in rural China where the elder population is the most vulnerable. METHODS: In 2010, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among older adults aged 60 or older in three rural communities in Macheng, a city in Hubei province, China. Of 2245

Leveraging social networks to expand HIV self-testing among culturally diverse MSM in Australia: insights from a CFIR-informed process evaluation.

BACKGROUND: HIV self-testing (HIVST) can help overcome barriers to clinic-based testing among men who have sex with men (MSM). Peer-led distribution through existing social networks may further extend reach and acceptability. OBJECTIVE: Guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), this study evaluated a social network-based HIVST intervention in Australia, in which "test promoters" distributed HIVST kits to friends and sexual partners, to identify facilitators and barriers to implementation. METHODS: Online semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 MSM, in

Engaging stakeholders in the north-west first 1000 days project: building a strong community support ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: The first 1000 days (F1D) (from conception to 2 years of age) is a pivotal period for maternal and child health. Engaging stakeholders at key stages of research and policy development can bridge the gap between scientific evidence, policymaking, and community needs, and contribute to the generation of culturally sensitive and evidence-based strategies to enhance maternal and child health. This research presents a mixed-methods analysis of stakeholder consultation associated with the North-West First 1000 Days (NW F1D) project. OBJECTIVE: To gain deeper insights into the perspective

Strengthening field-informed for-profit private sector engagement strategy in malaria elimination: insights from a single-group quasi-experimental pilot study in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Despite the dramatic achievements in malaria control, Bangladesh continues to face persistent transmission in high-endemic regions such as Bandarban in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. One important strategy to close surveillance and case management gaps is to involve the for-profit private sector that serves marginalized populations including high-risk occupational groups and communities facing geographical obstacles. The objectives of this study were to determine the practicality and the effects of involving the private healthcare providers in the national malaria surveillance system

An empirical study and evolutionary game analysis of computing power factors promoting enterprise green investment.

Corporate green investment plays an important role in industrial decarbonization, but the influence of computing power on firms' investment incentives remains insufficiently understood, particularly with respect to collaboration across enterprises and the allocation of risks and returns. This study combines a tripartite evolutionary game model with panel analysis at the firm level. The model describes strategic interactions among providers of computing power services, enterprises in heavily polluting industries, and enterprises in other industries. It examines how computing power changes proje
